Short and technical state park course

Reviewed: Played on:May 20, 2023 Played the course:once

Pros:

-Classic Discatchers, in fairly good repair. I do appreciate that they do have hole numbers on them.
-Mix of wooded and open holes, almost all have obstructions of some sorts
-Located close to camping area in John Bryan state park. Great hiking if you want to make a day or weekend of it
-Bathrooms and water available in campground
-Parking available close by, but can be limited by the activity at campground
-Well kept grounds

Cons:

-Dirt tee pads
-No tee signs, just a post with the hole number painted on
-Didn't see a course map anywhere
-No indications for next hole location, so udisc was a must, but...
-Very poor cell signal. Almost worth starting a round on your phone before you get there so you can have all the map data loaded when you start your round
-Some of the wooded holes are just directly obstructed, making possible lines limited. This is only really a gripe for those with stronger arms, as a beginner wouldn't have as much of a chance for a run at the basket
-Thick and heavy brush off fairways when in the woods. Can be quite a challenge to find lost discs

Other Thoughts:

This is a great course to have at a state park near a campground to get exposure to families looking for something to do. The biggest change I would make would be to add simple tee signs and "next tee" markers on the baskets to aid navigation. Worth a play if you're at the park already, but I won't be driving from Dayton just to play here. Great for beginners, I'm sure I'll play again soon when we come through John Bryan again.

Just needs a little clearing out 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:Jan 13, 2021 Played the course:once

Pros:

+ This relatively short 9 hole course is mostly flat. Holes 1-5 are in a park setting, with just a few trees on each hole to contend with. Mind the briars/thick vines on holes 4 (entry to woods), 5 (right side treeline), and the woods holes. These are likely nasty in the summer. Hole 4 is about 75' in the woods, after maybe a 200' fairway shot--look for a small clearing. Pretty nice for a shorter hole.

Holes 6-9 start just past the camper check in building, and are wooded, with decently open fairways, though at ground level they are not super cleared out. I played in winter, and going off the fairway wasn't a big deal, but I imagine in summer it would be. Hole 6 is a fairly basic RHBH hyzer. The basket is still damaged, I just treated as an object, not a basket. Hole 7 is a quite short ace run. Hole 8 a nice turnover or forehand for the RH player. Hole 9 is a longer downhill with some brush that goes up about 4', so one has to play over that first. It's a nice hole.

OTHER PROS:
+Decent flow, one can play 1-5, or all 9 easily.
+Plenty of parking
+Year round pit style toilets
+Easy to get to in John Bryan State Park--right next to camping area
+Food close by in Yellow Springs, several other courses within 20-30 minutes--Xenia, Springfield, and Cedarville
+We were only players on a nice winter day (43 degrees).

Cons:

-Hole 6 basket still heavily damaged
-Grass teepads
-No benches, tee signs (just wood posts with hole #), or next tee signs (Udisc quite helpful)
-Holes 6-9, while having decent fairways, could still be cleared out better, as I think in summer the ground cover is pretty rough, especially hole 9. But in winter--it was fine.
-Holes 4-9 have some nasty vines, try to stay out of those. They are bad in winter, likely worse in summer.

Other Thoughts:

*Discatcher baskets ok but chains getting just a little stiff.
*Little elevation, except a slight downhill on hole 9, which was a pretty fun hole.
*Overall, this is a novice/rec player friendly course. Intermediate and up will only be challenged on a few holes.
*I would play again, but wouldn't travel more than an hour to do so.
*Would be a star higher with teepads, tee signs, next tee indicators, clearing out some vines, and better cleared holes 6-9.
*Cart, but not wheelchair friendly.
* No water or O/B that I saw, though road might be played O/B on hole 1.

*I am in my 50s, 50 or so courses played, 875ish.

Pros:

Open throws accept for #4! We had a hard time finding it.

Cons:

We couldn't find #6-8 at all. There could be better method of pointing to next hole.

Other Thoughts:

We were hampered by a downpour but did try to find the baskets for 6-8. We were unable to finish the course.

Pros:

Folks have been talking about a course in John Bryant State Park just outside Yellow Springs, OH for quite some time. I even heard they had baskets and a kind of 'make up your own layout' here just recently. Well, now there is a design, there are tee posts and baskets, and there is clearing going on for five of the holes that will utilize the woods more than just the mature park trees. I explored the course this afternoon to kick off my spring break, and drew up a schematic map for dgcr.

The first five* holes play in the mature and well-kept space just left of the camp office, so park to your right before getting to the campground & you'll be in the middle of things. The first three range from 200 to 300 feet with a choice of lines to get to baskets typically hidden behind or in the midst of large trees, but all are approachable. The fourth (here's the asterisk) throws into the woodline through a tight window to a green they've already trimmed (but see cons). The fifth is a dogleg right taking you back to the entry drive.

You need to walk towards the park entrance, cross the drive by the camp office, bypass the 9th basket, and look for a path to your left that enters the tightly wooded finishing holes. The dogleg left #6 is followed by a fun little ace run across a slight dip with a few trees to work around. Hole 8 swings majestically and just fairly enough around a left to right arc, then you finish down a slope toward the camp store.

The difficulty level is set to recreational to intermediate skill levels, and the plan is to have all concrete tees with alternates on 1, 5 & 6 (I found the first two of those today). Slightly faded DisCatchers usually have the hole number somewhere on the rim (though in reflectorized silver, which can't be seen from the tee). The baskets are still in pretty good shape. Tees are marked with 6' high posts with numbering on them, and tees are designated at this time by two bricks just forward of each post. Overall, a pretty fun little layout with some variety and replay-ability

Cons:

The woods holes are in the early clearing and cleanup stages, with hole 4 having a cut pile of ash tree trunks filling the intended gap, so if you want to play it right now, you need to park your tee shot there & putt into a tight window. Watch the stumps of the saplings they've cleared around the basket. Will be nice when the gap is finished and those stumps ground down.

The rough cut on 6 though 9 makes for some careful footing and cautious throwing right now. Love to come back in a year or so & see how well they've finished it up. Hole 9 currently has "Crime Scene" yellow tape blocking the middle third of the fairway. Hopefully the only crime committed here has been the murder of the Ash trees by those pesky Emerald Borers. Probably they just want to make sure they finish clearing the dangerous stuff before you play the hole, so for now, just walk to the right after 8 and you pop out by the campground, with a bridge back to the camp office.

Other Thoughts:

I skipped hole nine. If it's still taped off when you visit, please do them the same courtesy. Current rating number is for the course "as is", and will go up a notch when the clearing is complete, and concrete and signage finished.
