I Like This Little College Course! 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:Aug 14, 2016 Played the course:once

Pros:

The Bluefield College course, "The Ram", plays through and the around this small college's campus. The course has these cool little green tee signs. I think they match the rest of the college's signage. There are no tee pads. You just tee from the sidewalk or next to the signs. The baskets are nice, new Discatchers with the yellow band and #'s.

Hole 1 starts right in the center of campus and plays 216, across the hub. I wonder how crowded this hub area gets. From here it's quite a walk to find the # 2 hole. I just luckily walked that direction because I had noticed baskets down there on my drive in. # 2 is way cool. It has to be the signature hole here. You're teeing it up from way up above an large athletic field. The basket sits out by itself 350' down there. I would think it would be possible for scattered armed students to throw one off the wall of the gymnasium, which is on your left side. Then # 3 starts the playing back towards the main campus buildings.

About # 7, the hole the course designer thinks can never be birdied. I believe some guy with a big arm, 400' drive, could throw up a big ole hyser bomb that wraps around the last tree guarding the basket. That guy with the big arm is not me. I took a three.

The course ends with a cool little ACE run 171' across a campus road.

Cons:

Navigation is a little dicey. I was lucky to stumble across # 2.

The long walkouts going to # 2 and then again walking to # 6.

The first hole across the hub has to be a problem at times.

Even my fav, # 2, has to has students on that field sometimes.

Other Thoughts:

Note to course designer. There are a couple of incredibly easy way to point the way to the next tee. The easiest is to wrap brightly colored tape around the rung in the basket which points to the next tee. That's very easy to do. The second way is to paint the rung. This looks a little better. A third way is to hang a directional arrow from the rungs. I've seen these directional arrows made from wood, metal or plastic. Hang them with wire or plastic ties. Still another guide is paint an arrow on a regular brick and bury the brick in the dirt under the basket.

Nice course. It's a nice design. Congratulations on getting this project pushed through the proper channels. I'm sure that was a chore. Next step is to get the intramural office involved and set up a weekly league or doubles event or how about a co-ed doubles tourney? Good luck with the course.

Perfect For Students 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Jan 5, 2016 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

First of all I'm the course designer but I will try to be as unbiased as possible. This 9 hole course was 100% designed with students in mind. A round can be played individually in 30 minutes or 45 mins in a group, perfect if students have an hour between classes. Holes are short but not gimme birdies. There is plenty of OB and tricky basket placements to give even experience players a bit of a challenge.

Cons:

Cons:
- only 9 holes
- natural tees and only one tee per hole
- 2 longish walks between holes
- no signage (yet)

Other Thoughts:

I will give a brief detail of each hole. All holes are par 3

Hole 1 - The course starts in the "quad" which is the center of campus and right beside the student center where students can check out discs. 216 ft. OB side walks and over.

Hole 2 - 350 ft Funnest hole on the course. Wide open extreme downhill hole. Very fun watching your disc bounce on the air.

Hole 3 - 232 ft Deceptively uphill hole with a protective mando to right guardian tree in front.

Hole 4 - 202 ft Short hole but plays much longer. Several large trees guard the green. Basket is set down in a circular brick landscaping.

Hole 5 - 148 ft Nothing special here except a great Ace run. Students will probably empty their bag just to see. Pavement and across is OB.

Hole 6 - 185 ft Short but tricky hole. Sidewalk and left of sidewalk down the left side of fairway is OB. Parking lot to the right is OB. Basket itself sits on a slope that goes away from the throw with a tree guarding the front.

Hole 7 - 303 ft Most difficult hole on the course. Sidewalk and to the right of sidewalk is OB. Pavement in front of building OB. Very large trees guarding entire left side of fairway. Basket sits on the shelf of a slope. I don't see this hole ever being birdied.

Hole 8 - 247 ft Uphill blind tee shot. Several large trees all around the green.

Hole 9 - 171 ft Very short throw but basically an island green. Parking lot is OB. Sidewalk and right of sidewalk is OB.

Final thoughts: Again this course is the perfect course for a quick round for the students. It also makes a great putter only round to work on form for more experienced players.
