Summer and Winter Ridge Layout 2+ years

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:Jul 3, 2015 Played the course:2-4 times

Pros:

Beautiful private course set in the Southwest Virginia Blue Ridge Mountains with 18 holes and dual tees playing over some nice variety of elevation changes, mix of woods and open holes, and ace runs and a couple par 4s. Creek comes into play on about half the holes. Course was in great shape and Vince was out mowing and marking things before I got to them. Navigation was pretty easy. Tiki golf at night. I don't recall seeing any cow pies.

Cons:

Not really a con, but in the summer the course is shortened into the Summer Ridge layout, I can't really fault the course for being in the short layout in the summer as the amount of mowing required would be insane to maintain the longer Timber Ridge layout. Some people may not like the carpet or natural tees and inconsistent baskets, but I was fine with them. I was told they are going to upgrade the baskets when they get enough funds. Only one loop back to parking lot.

Other Thoughts:

The Timber Ridge cattle farm property is what I'd consider fairly ideal for disc golf, similar to Hawk Hollow(What is it about cattle farms?) and has a beautiful views of mountain peaks.

Since the layouts vary the hole #'s here's the hole by hole breakdown of Summer Ridge:
Hole 1 is a big open downhill bomb to a basket right before the creek and has some trees overhanging/protecting the basket some. I had a little deja vu of Hole 1 at Hawk Hollow. Both are one of my favorite starting holes.

Hole 2 is a flat short technical straight wooded hole with the creek winding through it.

Hole 3 is a long winding par 4 or maybe 5 with rolling elevation. There's trees to the sides about 30-40' wide fairway the entire length but not overhanging canopy. This hole reminded me of Idlewild and was a favorite.

Hole 4 is an open uphill bomb par 3 with the basket tucked behind a row of pines.

Hole 5 plays back downhill, it's a short par 3 teeing off from behind the pines into an open space that chokes back down approaching the basket behind the creek. Another favorite hole.

Hole 6 is an uphill par 4 through the woods.

Hole 7 is a straight tunnel about 200' through the woods with the basket another 80' into the open field.

Hole 8 is an open uphill par 3.

Hole 9 plays across the slope teeing off in the field and playing the other half through the woods with two different distinct routes. Another favorite hole.

Hole 10 was my starting hole, a short slight downhill par 3 that is a tight tunnel slight right turn.

Hole 11 almost mirrors hole 10 playing back uphill through the woods.

Hole 12 is a flatish short technical hole with a 6' high raised basket. Fun hole.

Hole 13 is a short technical ace run.

Hole 14 is on open par 3 with woods to the right and the hole bends around to the right.

Hole 15 is similar to 13 but plays slightly downhill.

Hole 16 is a short par 3 with trees lining the right side and ob left and behind the basket. This was probably my least favorite hole, it had the most rough and barbed wire fence.

Hole 17 is a long slightly uphill par 4 to a hanging basket in a large tree. This is probably my favorite hole on the course and not because of the hanging basket, but because of the multi-shot fairway design.

Hole 18 is an open uphill par 3 with trees lining the left side.

Overall this a fantastic private course and one of the best courses in VA. The short Summer Ridge layout is rated "E" for everyone, it's suitable for beginners to expert. I'm hoping to come back to play this course in the longest layout even though it takes me 4 hrs to drive one-way.

***Update***
Played the long Timber Ridge layout with Vince and a couple local players, great host and people and players. All of my favorite holes remained in the long layout, some have different numbers though. The wooded holes changed/merged a bit and a couple longer open holes were added.

Virginia's Best Kept Secret 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Dec 7, 2013 Played the course:2-4 times

Pros:

The thing you have to keep in mind when reviewing/playing this course is that it is a private course. This course is not a well manicured public park. The majority of the work is done by the course designer and volunteers. (Though Hole 12 looks like a professional park!)

- Distance:
The first hole is about a 1000 ft shot off of the tee with OB to the left of the entire fairway. 8, 9, 10, 12, 14, and 17 are also semi-open holes that require powerful arms.

- Tight wooded lines and small gaps.
There are many holes that also require a good deal of accuracy/precision off of the tee. Hole 14 is perhaps one of the smallest gaps to hit to get in an open field where you are still a decent way from the basket. (2,4,6,7,11,13, and 14)

- Good use of OB.
Many of the holes that seem easy have the threat of going out of bounds. (1,2,3,9,16,17,18)

- The course requires you to use an arsenal of
shots
There are times when you are put in situations where you have no choice but to use a certain shot.

- Ace run holes
There are definitely a couple holes that are ace-able but these holes are not necessarily easy. If you do not get a good drive off of the tee you can run into a lot of problems.

- Creeks/crevices
A good couple of holes are set around the creek that runs through the property. This creek is not OB but it can be hard to throw out of if you are unlucky enough to find yourself in it. The pin for hole 8 is located on the edge of the creek and can be intimidating. Other holes the creek comes into play on: 2, 8, 10, 11, and 16.

- tall basket on 13.
The tall basket on 13 makes for a nerve-racking birdie/par putt.

- Good use of elevations:
2 is a down hill shot with a small (low) gap off the tee. 4 you have an uphill approach shot. 9 is an up hill bomb from out of the woods. 10 is a down hill bomb to a basket situated near the edge of the creek. 18 is an up hill shot with a down hill approach and on a slant that could cause your disc to roll.

Most Memorable Holes:
Honestly i enjoy all of the holes a lot. But the ones that stood out to me the most were: 1 (mainly because of the distance), 4 (this is a tunnel shot out to an open field that you have to then shoot far up to the left), 9 (Beautiful uphill bomb), and 11 (a nice tiny gap right off the tee).

Cons:

This course is set on a private cattle farm and a lot of the cons are due to this, but this is to be expected.

- Cow pies.
a hole lot of them! (that means poop).

- Briers and thorns
18 has a small but thick brier patch to the right of the pin.

- Natural tees
This isn't really a con but more of a preference. But since this course is set on fields that cattle trample on there can't really be permanent tees put in.

-Baskets
A lot of the baskets are older than I am. But that is because they have been donated or recycled. Therefore you should always be thankful and donate to the basket funds anytime you can!

Other Thoughts:

This is a fun course run by a nice guy that loves disc golf. If you are lucky enough to play this course be thankful and respectful.

Also donate to the basket fund and one day there will be nice new Innova baskets all throughout this beautiful property!
