From Here to Timbrook Too

Reviewed: Played on:Apr 8, 2023 Played the course:once

Pros:

My review for Timbrook may very well be outdated by the time you read this. Guess you'll need to write one now.rn- Course currently is a 9 hole layout. There are clear plans to make this an 18-hole course. The several additional baskets I saw in the ground around the pond to the left of the library should be a clue.rn- As is, this is a short, basic, decent layout. There's good use of elevation with three fun downhill holes and a couple nice uphillers too.rn- #2 is a fun throw. Open, downhill 246-footer with a small retention pond directly in front of the basket. It looked pretty murky. It's not big, so should be able to fish out any discs. It just means don't leave your shot short. Excellent hole to throw multiple discs.rn- #4 is the downhill ace run. 155 foot, straight ahead shot (trees on both sides of the fairway). As soon as you release, you can tell if your disc is on line. I hit the top of the cage and had my disc bounce straight down. 4 inches shorter and it's an ace. Soooo close.rn- And #8. The longest hole here at 283 feet. Hole has a hill along the right side of the entire fairway so you need to come at it straight or from left to right. There are trees on the left side if you start your shot too far out. I liked this placement more than the other two downhillers as it's not a pin placement you see as often as the other two.rn- #1 is an open uphill shot. #3 is a heavily wooded uphill shot. This was the toughest pin placement on the course. #6 is a wooded uphill shot. Of these, I enjoyed both #1 & 6.rn- Easy navigation. Good spot for a quick round.rn- For a compact site, the course does have good variety. I felt I was throwing different shots on many holes.

Cons:

This is still an overly simplistic layout. It's even easier than Peaks View.rn- Tee signs are inconsistent. Some signs have holes listed twice. #7, 8, and 9 also include #16, 17, & 18 (7/16,, 8/17, 9/18), as if they're expecting people to play twice. Or, there will only be 15 baskets, so these holes will be played 3 times. Or, they will have to renumber. Or, none of the above.rn- Apparently, there's a walking trail that goes through, or alongside, #2, 3, & 5. Found out right as I was about to throw on #2. Need to have signage alerting disc golfers to be careful of walkers or vice versa.rn- GPS was confused about where to park. I saw a basket near the pond (one of the in-progress holes), and turned in by the library. Found out through walking that the small unmarked parking lot is right next to the first tee. Maybe signage would be helpful?rn- Not sure how accessible all portions of the course will always be. When I pulled in on a Saturday afternoon, there was a flag football practice going on in the field where #7's tee is located. By the time I got to #7, they had finished.rn- Some of the hills are a bit sketchy when wet. Have good shoes when going up #3 & 6 and down #4 when it's wet.

Other Thoughts:

For a simple, quick round course, Timbrook is perfectly fine. Made me think of Dorton Park (Concord) just outside of Charlotte.rn- You can play this course with a putter(s) and a mid. Only reason to bring more discs is if you want to throw multiple shots on the downhill holes.rn- For the most part, this is a good course for casuals/beginners. On #2, you can aim left of the pond to take water out of play.rn- It'll be impressive if they can fit in 9 more baskets here without the course feeling cramped. You can have a fun 18 hole, 4,000-foot layout if you're smart with your design. Just don't have a lot of holes like #7 that are simply filler. rn- This area has a surprising number of courses. It's great seeing them still adding more. Building beginner friendly courses like this does lead to the building of more advanced-level ones too.rn- This was a good quick round for me. It was course six of nine on the day for me. It was the last one before I started feeling the grind. rn- There are many better ones to play in the area. This is one of the most convenient ones, being right off the fairway. Once it's expanded, it's appeal will most likely grow.
