Two Harbors HS: Home of the Agates!

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:Jul 29, 2023 Played the course:once

Pros:

Two Harbors High School is located near the town of the same name along Minnesota's scenic North Shore. The school has installed a 9-hole disc golf course that utilizes some of the athletic fields, as well as an adjacent meadow and wooded area.

This course has some decent challenges for rec level players. It plays on the shorter side, with most holes moderately tight to very tight (looking at you, #3 and #4). Minor water hazards come into play on #3 (a short throw across a tiny creek) and #8 (a marshy area behind/to the left of the basket).

The tee signs have all of the required info, including the distance in yards. Some of the distances did seem like they were actually a little longer than what the signs indicated. The signs have hole nicknames as well, which I always think is a fun touch.

There is a small course map mounted to the top of the 9th basket. This actually isn't a bad move, since that basket is what people driving in will see first.

Cons:

Navigation is tough here. The paths between holes are usually mowed but sometimes they fork and there are no arrows to point in the correct direction. It took me a while to find #5, which (I think) required walking out from the woods into the open athletic fields area, then taking a second unmarked narrow trail back into the woods to the tee. Take a photo of the map before starting out at a minimum, or better yet use UDisc for navigation. One hint: During the long walk between #2 and #3, keep left at all forks.

The baskets are homemade designs. They are painted silver and vaguely resemble DISCatchers. They actually seemed to catch alright, but they were mounted too low and also the bottoms of the baskets don't have enough rungs - meaning that discs can land in the basket and fall through it to the ground. I'd rather they had this issue versus not catching discs, although obviously neither is ideal.

The tee pads are natural in wood frames - uneven and overgrown.

The course is flat, and a couple of the tightest holes don't really have a realistic line to the basket. Not a realistic line for novice high school players anyway. The rough throughout much of the course is VERY rough, with disc loss a definite possibility during the summer months. Again, not great for high schoolers just trying to learn how to play. They had mowed the fairways recently when I visited, but if that were to stop several holes would quickly become unplayable.

The distances are too short to challenge better players.

The course does a great job of avoiding potential safety issues for #1-6, then it seemed like the designers kind of just gave up. #7 plays directly across the edge of a running track, and #8-9 both play across/along walking paths between the school and the athletic fields.

The course is missing extras like a practice basket, trash cans, benches, etc. A porta potty that was on site when I visited was likely just there temporarily for some construction on the opposite side of the parking lot.

Other Thoughts:

My partner and I chose to round out our 5 days in Minnesota with a weekend in Duluth, and we spent a lovely afternoon driving up the North Shore (I'd recommend Split Rock Lighthouse, if you are into such things). This course served as a way to stretch our legs on the way back to Duluth, and a nice addition to my course pin map (as I ended up not having time to play any of the courses right around Duluth).

That said, I honestly can't really recommend this one. It's not a good design for students, and not enough fun for travelling disc golfers. My partner enjoyed taking photos of the meadow area, which made me feel better about my request to stop and take the 45 mins it took to navigate and play this course. There aren't really any other options in the area, so baggers go for it if you must. Fingers crossed they mowed the fairways recently!
