The newest and best course in Blacksburg 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:Nov 5, 2021 Played the course:once

Pros:

Good Turf tee pads, these are not the normal short turf variety, but actually longer turf. I'm not sure if these are better or worse over time, but they were great the day I was there. The only issue I had were a couple were tough to find with all the leaves down :), it took me a while to find #2 and I never did find #4.
Speaking of the tees, there are two on every hole, labeled Orange (Short) and Maroon (Long), the school colors! Most of these provided different looks at the hole through this wooded course. There are no heavily wooded holes, a couple of tight spots on #3 and #8, but mainly partially wooded holes.
At the Maroon tees, there are great, full color tee signs with the distances from both tees and a hole diagram. There's a full color course map at #1.
Also in full color, are the Orange DISCatchers, since the course was just opened in 2021, they are still very bright and easy to see. The course is located next to their on campus 9 hole Golf course, and #2 requires you to drive over one of those greens.

Cons:

While the tee signs are great, there is just one per hole, at the Maroon tee. You don't also walk past the Maroon tee to get to the Orange tee, so some detours are needed.
It looks like the DG course was once part of the Golf Course (probably the other nine), but a rather new looking Visitors Center and Hotel likely took over those nine holes and the remaining land was used for DG. The grass was long in most places and everything was a little rough, landscaping needs to pay a visit.

Other Thoughts:

This is not your typical on campus University course. Most of those are short, Par 3 courses for another rec option for the students. This course has a Par 5 and 2 Par 4s, plus 4 of the Par 3s are at, or over, 300'. Most players will need to use everything in their bag.
They start out right away with #1, 660'/680' uphill Par 5. A mostly flat drive with small scattered trees in the fairway, then uphill to a narrowing fairway, then a left to right curving fairway to a protected green.
#4 is a similar hole, scattered trees in the fairway, then turning right and uphill through a narrowing fairway, at 522'/555' you will earn a Par 4.
#9 requires you to navigate a tunnel off the tee, then it opens up to the widest fairway down to the green.
Driving through Blacksburg, I saw more people/students either waiting for the bus, or riding the bus, than any city this size. I took that as a sign that there is a lot of restricted parking on campus. So, instead of parking near the start of the course (near the Golf Course, where a permit is probably required), I parked at the Visitors Center (lots of parking, and I am a Visitor :) ), then started on #6, right next to that parking lot. This also avoided what looks like a long walk from the main parking lot to #1.
A really good campus course, that can be played twice, or played with another Niner in town for a good 18 holes. Or, maybe the Hokies can add another 9 closer to the Visitor's Center for a great campus course.
