Best Course In the Region 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Apr 20, 2014 Played the course:2-4 times

Pros:

The layout is generally well designed considering the area, with length of holes varying from 230 to well over 800 feet. Elevation changes of the area are used extremely effectively, which is probably the best merit of the course when it comes to the game itself. Very little OB is in place and natural hazards make up most of the challenge. Scoring well requires a good variety of different kinds of shots, especially handling long and occasionally curving tunnels is important.

The course is very well and professionally kept, and the teepads, signs and baskets are in good to excellent condition. Naturally dry environment and woodchipped sport trails cause mud and moisture to be virtually non-existent, with the exception of temporarily icy fairways early into the season. Several litter bins are available, though mostly on early holes.

Thanks to the course being within a sports academy, there's a good deal of services available that can be considered disc golf luxury. Accommodation, including cottage rent, is available for reasonable price. The local restaurant is open all season, apart from the odd Finnish holiday in June.

Cons:

There's a potential weak spot in the course design which can be found on the back nine. Four long and consecutive holes following trails can feel tedious, especially if you don't stay on the fairway (the rough is sometimes so dense you'll just have to putt back out). Directions between some holes could be improved as a first timer may have occasional trouble without a map.

Some traffic on the course should be expected due to the rapid growth of disc golf in Finland, especially on those long and tight holes. There is also a popular grilling site next to hole 2, which requires attention especially on fair days.

While the course isn't in the middle of nowhere, it's still logistically not the best possible location. Public transport is of no help so you will need a car to reach it.

Other Thoughts:

Overall this is without a doubt the best course in the region thanks to good services, overall condition and a good challenge even for experienced players. This is definitely a stop if you're coming by, I guarantee you'll be impressed in some way.
