One of the Quickest Rounds You'll Play 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:Oct 15, 2021 Played the course:once

Pros:

- great full color tee signs
- concrete tees
- high quality Innova DISCatchers color coded per course (red - short, yellow - long)
- minor amenities, such as garbage can at start and bench near midway point
- next tee signs on baskets help navigation
- some rolling hills incorporated

Cons:

- some trail crossing hazards to look out for
- very short
- OB grasses could make finding discs a challenge at times
- plays through same area as long course, though interference seemed minimal
- relatively flat with few obstacles - mainly an accuracy challenge to stay out of the tall grass
- hole 6 ends fairly far from parking lot

Other Thoughts:

Walnut Hollow Short is a respectable course, with high end concrete tees, full color tee signs, and quality baskets. The park seems well maintained and has a nice info sign at the beginning showing the layout of the 2 courses. Cary did a very nice job with signage at these courses.

I think the main cons here are the lack of obstacles and the short length of the course. I don't view the length as a huge con, considering there's a full 18 hole course at the same location. The 6 hole course is very beginner friendly and would be great for younger kids as well. Some of the holes are under 200'. You won't be particularly challenged here if you're an experienced player, but it's a fun enough round if you can stay out of the tall grasses.

Hole 4 was by far my favorite hole since it incorporated some slight elevation change and went into a wooded area with some tree obstacles. Otherwise, the course is somewhat repetitive. I really do appreciate all of the next tee signs and color coded baskets, which made this round quick and fun.

All in all, this course is well maintained but doesn't have anything particularly unique about it. If you're in the area it's fun enough for a quick round but otherwise there are more exciting courses all around. Fel-Pro which is also in Cary is much more popular.

It's short 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Aug 6, 2019 Played the course:once

Pros:

Fairways are wider, so you don't risk losing your disc. Course is easy to walk and has a lot of beauty/scenery.

Cons:

The weeds, though mostly grass, are very easy to lose a disc in. Some of them were up to my face and I'm 6ft. I threw one disc into the weeds once and it took a long time to find. I even found someone else's disc that looked like it had been there for years.

Other Thoughts:

I liked the course and would definitely play it again. Can't wait to try it's longer counterpart.

Good beginner course. 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:Sep 1, 2018 Played the course:2-4 times

Pros:

Great baskets! And they are a different color from the long course. This is a huge plus in my book. I'm not a fan of long and short layouts that have identical baskets since you can accidentally throw to the wrong one.

Nice tee pads with plenty of length for holes this short.

Informative tee signs.

Hole 3, best hole on the course.

Layout is pretty easy to follow. Plus the baskets have arrows in them that point to the next tee. Did I mention that I like the baskets?

Cons:

Besides being short and easy the biggest con is the lack of trees. Only two of the six holes have trees.

This course and the long course have some overlap which is not ideal. To get from the 1st basket to the 2nd tee pad you have to cross the fairway for long hole 1. When I was there it wasn't a big deal but it could be if both courses are busy.

Corn! It shouldn't come into play for decent players, but if it's your first time playing you could easily throw your disc in the corn field. Having to walk around a corn field looking for your disc isn't very fun.

Other Thoughts:

I am a big fan of having beginner course next to hard courses. It is a good introduction to disc golf for new players.

For a rating I am giving this course a 1.5.

Possible improvements- Plant grass in the fairways and keep it mowed. Plant some tree and bushes to force some line shaping. Add some wood chip paths between holes.
