Kauai is an amazing place, and if you're at Poipu Beach or Shipwreck Beach you're minutes away from Weliweli DCG. It's a quick playing 9 hole that has a few holes ready to eat a disc.

Half of the holes are very open and reachable, getting birdies on the card is nice before reaching the wild and wooded portions of the course. 1, 2 and 3 are mostly wide open, though 1 does have clusters of tall grass in front of the pin. Hole 4 is lined with woods to the right, and has a tree on the left three quarters of the way to the basket. There is a line of small trees protecting the basket, tucked just behind the tree line. It looks like the nook in that corner is the hangout spot, the benches and shade make for a nice place to take a break.

Hole 5 is the first tunnel hole, a shorter version of hole 9. Low ceiling, line drive, mid range do or die. You can recover from a bad drive and make par because it isn't too long. A bad bounce or missed putt can lead to a bogey just as easily. Hole 6 is a left to right, with the thick woods to the right side all the way. Kind of a long one, and the basket is tucked away in the rough. A bad angle on the approach can really cost you here. Look at the photo of this basket and the crazy cactus tree in front of it. You don't want to be searching for anything lost in there.

Hole 7 is long and wide open across the field. Hole 8 takes a mostly open line, right to left, until you reach the basket that is in a pocket on the edge of the tree line. There are more spiny protectors that can make that putt really tough if you overshoot the basket. The last hole was probably my favorite, a longer tunnel shot that has a little bit of a crook halfway down. Very similar to hole 5, but maybe slightly more room to work with.

There is a practice basket next to the restroom. Tees are concrete and the baskets are nice.

Don't jump straight from hole 4 to 6, look for the fifth tee on the right side. The entire hole is concealed in the trees, and can be overlooked. There are numbers on the tee pads if you're paying attention.

The open holes are nice opportunities for getting under par, but not the most exciting. The rough is thick, and a bad shot may leave you searching through some crazy vegetation.

The wind was blowing my entire trip, and Weliweli was no exception. I didn't even get one birdie, however I'm convinced I could go 2 or 3 under if I had several more rounds. If I was totally dialed in on a calm day and got pars on 5, 6 and 9 I could pick up some birdies along the way to get me there. You could birdie any of them, but I think 6 might be the most difficult. It is long and the pin is hard to approach unless you get just the right angle. I wound up at 5 over (32), with bogies on holes 5, 7 and 8, and a double bogey on 6. The wind was brutal and my putting was not good.

I also played Princeville Mauka and Lydgate while on Kauai. Princeville is killer, and Lydgate is a great little beachside 9 hole course, but Wellweli has some charm as well. It is worth checking out if you get the chance. I really loved the woodsy surroundings on 5 and 9, and the protected baskets on 4, 6 and 8 can be tricky.

- It's on Kauai - the most beautiful place I've ever been in my life
- Easy to find the place, there's plenty of parking, there's a bathroom and water near the first tee, and the course is easy to navigate once you get there.
- There's a decent variety in the holes, given the land available
- The course is relatively easy and also decent exercise, particularly if you walk briskly between shots. I'm on vacation in paradise and relaxing, I'm not trying to play a tournament and stress over every shot or have death putts or water carries
- Fast. I played it four times in well under two hours - including some time spent hunting for some wayward discs and throwing more than one disc off the tee a few times
- There's enough thick vegetation in play on most of the holes where you need to take caution to avoid these areas if you're trying to shoot a low score - this makes the course quite a bit more interesting, in my view
- The baskets are all in perfect shape and have easily visible numbers
- Did I mention that it's located in paradise?

- There isn't too much of a challenge. Two tunnel shot holes and two holes where a FH would have been helpful (I only threw four discs in my suitcase, none were great for me to FH - so I didn't do great on those holes), but the rest are fairly open and easy. I would think this is only a con if you lived here and this was your only course option (it's the only course on Kauai as of this writing)
- As mentioned in another review, the tunnel shot on #9 can be avoided with a pretty low-risk thumber/tommy. One of the reviews says #5 was also that way but I didn't think to look to see if that was true
- No tee signs - each tee pad has the number of the hole on it though and the baskets are clearly numbered

- I STRONGLY recommend taking your phone and having the review below with the hole breakdowns accessible to you the first time you play - after you play the course once, it's no longer needed - but it is very helpful navigating the course the first time (caveat: I'm not 100% confident the distances in that review are exactly accurate, but they're at least close enough)
- I found every disc I threw in the thick vegetation surrounding the course and in some other spots on the course, but I think I got lucky. I can easily see how you could lose a disc if you don't pay close attention to where it went on a wayward throw
- I got to the course a little after 6 am on Father's Day. Played it four times and was back at my resort (a mile away) by eight. There was no wind, it was a little humid but not too bad, and I had the course to myself! Paradise in many ways.
- If you're staying on the south shore of the island, do yourself a favor and throw four discs in your suitcase (P&A, mid, something you can RHFH about 300-320, and a driver) and get up early one morning and go have some fun! I'm not sure it would be worth the drive from the north end of the island (it's probably 90 minutes from Princeville), unless you were just trying to bag a course in Hawaii or had other plans that day in the Poipu/south island area. If your mate doesn't play DG and prefers shopping, there's a decent shopping center very close to the course where they could keep occupied long enough for you to play
- You could easily get creative and throw at different baskets from each tee box if you wanted to add a few different holes other than the nine intended by the designer
- If you're looking for a real disc golf challenge, I'm not sure why you're going to Kauai in the first place. If you're looking to get a bit of DG/exercise in while you're vacationing in paradise, this course is perfect

EDIT: I have it on good authority that there are other courses on Kauai. They aren't on DGCR yet but you can find them with a search of the interwebs

-If you're on Kauai, this 9-hole course is definitely worth your time
-The holes are all Mach 5's, very sturdy, the best there is
-The grounds were well maintained, the fairways were all mowed
-I love the tree tunnel holes, holes 5 and 9
-Some great holes and different shots

-I am grateful for the concrete tee pads, but they're a bit too short
-The Tees and holes are marked, but the first time it's hard to know which holes you are headed toward because there is no map and some hidden holes. For example, the first tee we aimed for the seventh hole because it was right in front and hole one is hidden. Once you've played once it's easy to remember where you're headed.

Overall I am extremely grateful for a disc golf course on this island, and grateful for whoever organized and planned it. It really is a treat just having one permanent course on this island.

I had the fortunate opportunity to play this course during a week on Kauai for conference. My first thought after seeing that the island had a course was "man, I can get one state closer to all 50 played" (currently at 15 now).

First off, I think that the designers have really made the best out of a mostly barren landscape. Without going into a hole by hole (because it has already been done), I will say that this course if very Rh/Lh balanced. Most of the holes play in the open, while two of the holes (5 and 9) play through a pinball tight tunnel.

The baskets are some of my favorites. I love Mach 5s! They just feel so solidly built.

Teepads are small, but adequate for the distance required.

I really enjoyed playing around all of the cacti. I even got a FH flick lodged in on near the basket on hole 4.

Biggest cons that I see are mostly that the open shots don't require any level of line shaping. As easily as vegetation seems to grow on the island, the club should seriously think about planting something near at least a couple of the more open teepads to make the player shape a line.

The pinball holes I think are very close to being fair. However, the over the top line on both holes are wayyy easier than the tunnel shot. I personally threw a tomahawk on both holes and had easy putts. Hole 5, I would also cut a few of the small trees behind the basket... this would leave a comeback putt if you blow by the basket. Hole 9, I would cut the half cut trees straight to the ground. These are dangerous if somebody were to trip. Would also look at cutting that rhfh flex out just a little more. Any experienced player would throw the overland every time right now. And... I don't think that is what the designer wants.

Otherwise, this course is a great start to getting a dg scene on the island. What a paradise you guys have! Mahal!

Personal experience: Have co-designed two course, chief work mule at Black Bear DGC in Portsmouth, Ohio. I have now played 70 courses in 15 states.

-Well laid out for the relatively small area.
-Concrete pads
-most holes are very open for the "less experienced" allowing them/me to "let er rip".
-good open parking
-bathroom facilities
-a few very tight tunnel shots through cactus (fun factor)

-pads are a little short
-no map or markers
-most holes a little too open offering little challenge

This was a fast course to play. We played 2 discs each and played 2 rounds. The entire open area is lined by cactus. If you send your disc into them you'll be sorry but that is the charm of this course and a much added "fun factor".

-some ace runs, with other good challenging holes
-Great mix of shots (but very forehand friendly)
-great mix of distances (from 150-400ft, see below for the hole breakdown)

-no signs yet (coming soon I hope)
-bunch of open holes, but they did what they could with the space
-teepads are a bit short and raised so no extra run up
-still needs a little work

-not crowded at all. Only saw 2 people the 5 times I played
-The wind can be tough!
-course is still being worked on and really coming together

I used my range finder to get the distances and tried to give a rundown of the holes below:

Hole 1, 185ft. This hole starts right at the opening of the parking lot. it is wide open with the basket behind a small mound of grass. Plays straight into the wind to make it a little tricky.

Hole 2, 250ft. This is slightly downhill with the hill going from right to left. The wind also plays right to left so my preferred shot is a forehand.

Hole 3. 260ft. Plays uphill and wide open. The wind was heavily in our faces which was the only obstacle.

Hole 4, 330ft. This plays down the treeline with the basket set into the last set of trees. The wind is blocked here and the green was nicely cleared out so that once you penetrate the trees, the green is pretty clear.

Hole 5, 150ft. The local group cleared out some trees so this shot is a very tight tunnel playing slightly downhill. Although it is only 150ft, it is extremely tight and makes for a nice challenge.

Hole 6, 310ft. The teepad is back near hole 5's teepad and the basket is blind. The basket plays into the treeline on the right set up against some cacti. The best play is a forehand that skips way right and you have to get the distance right, This plays slightly downhill and down wind.

Hole 7, 400ft. Back across the open field towards hole 1, this is the longest hole. it is pure distance with the wind being the biggest obstacle going left to right. The teepad is also a bit short making the run up tough.

Hole 8, 310ft. The basket is again located just into the treeline. This hole plays downhill and sloping left into the treeline. The wind was also right to left so distance control is key.

Hole 9, 205ft. Another tunnel shot similar to hole 5, but this has a bend to the left then a bend back to the right. I think this hole needs some work because they only true shot for me was a stall putter up and over the trees. The line they are going for is so tight and so hard to hit, it is not worth taking IMO and I have a good forehand. A little more tree trimming and that line becomes very very fun to throw.

I am excited to come back here and see how the course progresses as it is still very new.
