Pros:

Wondervu is now a 22 hole course. I'm not sure when that changed but I updated the info on here which still had it listed as an 18 hole course. As of this review there are no longer tee times required either. You can just show up and pay $10 per player for the day. This was great news since we had a tee time for a different course booked in the morning already. Glad I was able to fit this one in too.

The tee pads are all elevated and level turf pads on wooden frames. These are amply sized and worked great on a warm, dry autumn day. Not sure how they handle when wet, but they were great when dry. One tee pad per hole. Nicely done.

The baskets are all in great shape as well. The first 18 holes all have DGA Mach III's. These were all mounted level, or at least very close to it. One pin position per hole from what I could tell. The last four baskets are randoms. One was a DiscGolfPark one, another was an MVP I think it was. Either way, all four of those were in great shape too. Zero issues with the baskets here. Another bonus is the fact that most of the baskets that aren't visible from the tee had large flag posts attached to the top to help with location. In addition to that many of them had large orange trianguler signs below the basket. The same type of ones you'd see on the back of a tractor. Definitely helpful on the silver Mach's.

The course flow is pretty easy to figure out. You'll probably still want a map, but it's more than doable without one. After playing the first 10 holes you'll come back to the parking lot which is always nice, especially on a hilly hike of a course like this one. Nice to be able to refill on fluids and use the restroom if need be.

The course design is also really well thought out. I appreciated the fact that they designed a lot of side slope holes as opposed to up/down, up/down. This makes for a much more enjoyable round that way. But there are still enough up and down holes to keep things interesting, they're just scattered throughout. The course plays in thinned out pine forest for all 22 holes. There's no wide open holes here, just technical, wooded mountain golf.

There's a bunch of pretty cool/sinister pin placements out here. Really amps up the risk/reward aspect. If you miss a putt on some of these you're looking at a potential three putt. Hell, with all the rocks on the ground it's even tricky just to lay up effectively. Lots of startegy required out here and it's not just off the tee.

Cons:

No legit tee signs, yet at least. I'd assume that these are the next thing on the to do list. I'd hope so at least. This was my number one con here. The reflective triangles definitely help with spotting the baskets but they also look kinda goofy. Having tee signs would eliminate the need for these.

The latter holes, starting around hole 13, had an absurd amount of loose branches all over the fairways. I'm assuming this section was recently cleared out which is awesome. Makes for some treacherous footing though. It was like being on rollerskates in a few places.

I wasn't a huge fan of the hole 11 and 12 combo. They're both good holes, it's just that they both play downhill and are side by side. We had nobody in front of us for the first ten holes. When we got to 11 all of a sudden it was a 4 group backup due to the waiting on 12's tee for the group in front to finish the hole. It would make more sense to just ditch 11 and keep 12, which is the better of the two. Not sure what the difference is between 22 or 21 holes.

Hole 22 just seems like a filler hole. It has the cool rock mound in the middle, but it also plays away from the parking lot which is just odd and kinda sadistic after playing 21 mountain holes.

Other Thoughts:

This was a really fun course. I'd play it again for sure. But it's not in my top three of the limited mountain courses I've played. I think once this one gets broken in a bit more it'll play better than it does currently. Definitely worth a stop as is though. Very fun course, just rough around the edges.

Super Fun Mountain Course!

Reviewed: Played on:Apr 14, 2023 Played the course:once

Pros:

-This course is Pay To Play, on private property and it is easy to see that the owners put a lot of time and love into this course. They responded quickly to my FB message request to schedule a tee time and allowed us to play even though the course wasn't technically open yet for the season.
-Artificial turf teepads.
-Good baskets.
-Lots of elevation. 650' elevation gain, starting at 8,672' according to my Fitbit. I don't live in the mountains, so I was a little concerned about the thin air but didn't have any issues during our round.
-Navigation was easy with a little assist from the Udisc map throughout the course.
-I always appreciate an opportunity to stop at the car in the middle of a round.
-Signature holes IMO were #4, #12 and #21.
-The areas off the fairways were cleared out enough to make it extremely difficult to lose discs unless your disc gets stuck up high, out of reach in the trees
-Beautiful scenery that is likely 1000x better most days, but it was cloudy and snowing during our round.
-The clubhouse area was a unique, fun amenity that you don't see at a lot of courses.

Cons:

-The signs at the teepads only showed the distance and appeared to be temporary.
-Struggling to think of any other cons so I'll just move on....

Other Thoughts:

The fun factor here was a 5/5 for sure. The locals are very lucky to have a special place like this in their backyard.

It was snowing during our round, which wasn't ideal but that just makes me want to get back during the summer months to try it again and get an opportunity to spend some $$ at the shop!

The Wonder of Vu

Reviewed: Played on:Aug 10, 2022 Played the course:once

Pros:

I love a mountain course. This one has a few extra holes which is a nice bonus. I counted 22 all together. Obviously the elevation changes and wooded fairways make it a bit more of a challenge. Thin mountain air is another variable to account for if you're coming from the plains like I have to.

There are a couple of par 4 holes, but most everything is par 3. Thus, distances are usually manageable. Not bonking the trees is is usually the bigger concern for me. Shot shaping is key. The fairway is usually fairly defined, but there are a couple of tight gaps. Hitting the proper landing zone to give the best approach is also a strategic implication at times.

The tees are well constructed and level. The signs are pretty basic, but give you an idea of what to expect. I couldn't see any problem with the baskets. There are some blind shots, but the hard to spot ones have slow moving vehicle reflectors (large, orange triangles) that hang over the pin.

There are a lot of good holes on this course. The best one for me was hole 12. It's a big downhill shot. Most of the way the line is in a clearing under power lines, but a stand of trees guard the pin at the bottom of the hill. I thought I nailed the drive, but ended up grazing the wire and sputtering out halfway down. Still a really fun tee shot.

Cons:

It is a pay to play, private course. Worth the price if you ask me. Planning ahead and booking a tee time might be advisable. I was there early on a weekday, and the place was mostly empty. Booking on Facebook was easy and they responded quickly to my requests.

A course map would be a nice feature for those who are not familiar with the layout. I didn't have a lot of trouble making my way around, but I did find an up to date map on another website that I checked once or twice. The hole info on the DGCR page I not current. There are 22 holes now, and some distances aren't accurate.

Other Thoughts:

I liked WonderVu a lot. The clubhouse hangout was sweet. Good use of the woods and elevation without being impossibly difficult. It doesn't have the majestic rocky features of Bucksnort, but there are some cool boulders and great scenery.

I was even through 9 holes. The back 9 got me pretty good, and I was 7 over after 18. DGCR app hasn't got the last four holes that complete the current layout, all par 3's that I played par on. Not too bad for a first visit, and I would surely return to attempt a better effort. If you're in the Denver or Boulder area it is totally worth the time and money to check this one out.

Pros:

Great views and vibes. Staff were friendly. Baskets are important to me and they were just fine. Great pads too. This would be a sick glow course.

Cons:

A bit repetitive. Some greens are very guarded and pretty much just a poke and hope to get reasonable looks off the pad.

Other Thoughts:

4/5 max is about right. From a golf perspective, the course is good but not great. 100% a good time but don't expect amazing hole design.

I made a tee time but that really didn't seem necessary. I got the feeling most people just show up.

If your vehicle lacks clearance, park on the main road next to the entrance and don't drive up.

Somewhat up to the hype 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Aug 16, 2020 Played the course:once

Pros:

Some great hole variation, in length, shape, elevation etc. Most of the holes feel unique from each other keeping you on your toes when you come up to each tee.

The shop and staff were great and clearly love the course. Nice selection of discs to get you to spend a little extra.

Great tees and baskets with a couple of interesting hanging baskets to get those who rely on the bottom pole to stop your disc rather than attempting a long putt.

The scenery is pretty great when it opens up. Admittedly, we played it during some of the peak smoke from the grand junction fires but you could still make out longs peak if you squinted.

The unlimited plays option is great though I didn't really understand how it worked with the tee time "system" they have.

Cons:

Branch cuttings, limbs, rocks, etc. fill up almost every fairway. I get that this is a mountain course but if you're not looking down while walking here, ankle twisting or worse is kind of an issue.

Some of the fairways are bordered by steep hills that dump directly onto the roadways surrounding the property. Specifically thinking of holes 7 and 11 (I think), where if your disc gets rolling, it'd be a bit of a pain to retrieve.

The back 9 are a lot rougher than the first with a lot of back tracking, dense trees and holes that play straight up some of the steepest hills on the property. Also, we just had more difficulty in general following this part of the course. I'd heard that the back 9 were kind of an ongoing project from some other players and it definitely showed.

Other Thoughts:

There seemed to be a pretty steep drop off in hole quality between the first and second halves of this course. Honestly though, the first 9 felt like the start of a solid 4 star course. The flow was great, the holes were interesting and they also felt like they'd undergone a lot of branch and brush clearing. The second half felt a little more half hazard and wonky with steep holes going straight through uncleared woody sections. It's not that it was all that bad, it just felt really inconsistent especially with the high ratings this course gets.

As others have noted, this course seems to always be changing with the owners making improvements kind of at their own pace. With some of the great holes this course does have, I'm definitely planning on coming back to see what they end up doing with the others.

Lot's of ups and downs 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:Aug 5, 2020 Played the course:once

Pros:

Wondervu DGC has a great local disc store with custom stamps and unique plastics from a variety of makers. I didn't get anything but I loved looking through the selection! And while there are other pros to this course, this may be my favorite.

A lose second though was the elevation. I like a course with some good ups and downs, and more downs than ups. There are some great downhill shots and uphill shots, and really only one very steep uphill (which is 1/3 the length of the steep downhill, but feels just as long or longer).

The hole design is overall very good (does that count as a pun?), and there's not really a hole I would say is bad on the course. There were only a few where I really got on the tee and was excited about it, excited for the challenge of it, and had to look at my discs and say, "which one of you is right for this hole, and which one of you will I throw anyway?"

The tee's were the best feature of this course, right up there with course design. They weren't all level, but the full-sized astroturf is pretty grippy and elevated into the fairway.

Cons:

I was kind of underwhelmed here. I didn't look too closely at the reviews, and that all of the 5 disc reviews were from, well probably less substantial than the disc ratings from the Trusted Reviewers.

To be more specific, I was frustrated by how many baskets were blind from the tee, especially being so short, ESPECIALLY BEING NO MAP. There's no course map available (that I could find, which maybe is a lack of my ability to find), and no hole maps on the tee's. This course desperately thirsts for direction on the holes, and some help navigating from 11 to 12 (also there was a lot of work being done, it's possible the directional arrows were on trees that got chopped down during my visit, as navigation was very labeled on every other hole). From 11 to 12 is a long uphill walk that does not seem intuitive, especially with other baskets being very visible.

The terrain is pretty rough, as there are woodchips EVERYWHERE. It's not too bad, but does take away from the natural beauty of the terrain.

There were a lot of superfluous trees on some approaches to the basket. A lot of luck will come into play on whether you're parked or dinked off a tree and possibly down the slope another 30-50'.

Another one of my biggest frustrations was the incongruency between distances on the tee sign, and the distances listed on the course site. It was usually an enormous discrepancy. If I had realized this was going to be a huge problem, I would have noted all the distances on the tees and adjusted them, but even those distances felt pretty off sometimes.

The finishing hole is pretty average, but the layout here makes it almost not worth it to play. After 17, you walk around the headquarters complex back to where you start, throw away from the pro store, then walk all the way back after you throw. I just left my bag on the tee pad and took my putter.

Other Thoughts:

I still give this course a 3.5 out of the good use of elevation, tee's, and layout. Hole 12 will always stand out to me because even though it was a little overgrown, the view from the tee was just gorgeous. Wondervu may not have been my ideal disc golf course, but it was a great place to be.

Great in Theory 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Jun 7, 2020 Played the course:once

Pros:

The location and scenery are in the Rockies with views of the Continental Divide. It is a stunning location - 10/10. The ideas of each hole design are sound -- good use of elevation, nice challenging short holes. The designers did not just add distance to make a hole interesting. The benches and course "art" are a nice touch. You will need to rest as the course is at 9000 feet, and the walk between holes is up and down. The tee pads are wooden platforms covered in astroturf and all built from scratch. This gives each hole a really flat and consistent approach on the tee. Lots of work to make this happen. Kudos. FInally, the owners are really friendly and stock a nice pro-shop.

Cons:

There is no map at all, and the signs about distances are sometimes off by 30-50 feet. You cannot always see the basket from the tee -- and with no flags to spot, this makes the lack of a map a deal-breaker. Most important, as much work and love as these guys have out into the course, and it is worth the $5 to play, the design and implementation of most of the holes is a work in progress at best. There needs to be consistent fairway options, and when you are off, it should not necessarily cost a stroke to get back in. At least half the holes need some pruning, thinning and managing before I would say this is ready for prime time. The course can be windy and crowded despite its remote location and pay-to-play.

Cons:

I guess the only con would be the parking situation. You have to go up a dirt driveway to park and really low vehicles might scrape in a few spots.

Burgeoning Potential 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Sep 2, 2018 Played the course:once

Pros:

Lots to love about this course! Very technical, which is a rarity for Colorado disc golf. Lots of love has gone into this course, which is apparent from the time you set foot on the property. Located high in the foothills on personal property. It has a kitchy feel: there's nicknacks spread throughout the property, some for decoration, some for seating, some just randomly strewn about for no reason at all. Some wood piles were made to be tunnel entrances to certain holes. Lots of signage and basket flags, making navigation a breeze (mostly). Each hole has it's own feel, and none had the feel of a filler hole. Finally, a small pro shop with goodies for everyone, staffed by some very laid back golfers. I felt very welcome! $5 to play is extremely fair.

Cons:

As currently constituted, this is a very difficult course, even if you're a seasoned vet. Beginners be warned. Some holes just have no line to the basket, save for an absolutely perfect (lucky) shot. I had one or two tee shots the entire day that went mostly, but not exactly, as planned. Natural tee pads were rough. Concrete pads would be overkill imo - I'd go with astroturf covered wood boxes personally. As a RHFH player playing alongside a LHBH player, we both were using a LOT of turnover shots all day, leading me to conclude this course is biased towards RHBH players. I didn't need a disc faster than a fairway driver. Currently, this is a cash only course, which was a mild bummer but something all players should be aware of coming in.

Other Thoughts:

I really was torn between rating this a 3.5 or a 4. I went with the 4 based on the awesome, generous staff, and the potential that this course will ultimately reach. It's easily worth the $5 to play. Looking forward to this course reaching full maturity!

Pros:

The front 9 layout is really good. Couches and benches at every tee box trust me you will use and appreciate these. First time I've seen chairs and couches at boxes and loved them!! Nice baskets including a few hanging baskets throughout the course. Very cool mountain shots, with incredible views. Pretty good navigation with arrows pointing you in the right direction. This course will challenge all players and having you throw different shots. A very cool tunnel par 4 if you get off the fairway goodluck saving your par

Cons:

Natural tee pads aren't in the best shape. This is really a tale of 2 courses. The front 9 is a 4.5 Star however the back 9 has a ways to go. A lot still needs to be cut out as many of these holes have a throw and hope type feeling. No really lines and hole 15 par 5 is just ridiculous. Couple pin placements are questionable on backside

Other Thoughts:

Potential potential potential that's the keyword with this course. I could see this easily becoming a top level and destination course with tee pads and more defined fairways. Overtime I think this course will be great but with how it sits now still a little to rough. Once the backside gets work done my review goes up without question but how it sits now 3 stars is fitting

This course is on it's way to greatness 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:May 26, 2018 Played the course:once

Pros:

--It's a Colorado Mountain Course, it's absolutely beautiful up in the woods.
--It's a challenging course, and sometimes it takes a few minutes to find a line which means every hole will be a different experience.
--The layout is fantastic. Even though most of the holes are only 2-300 feet, they play much more challenging than that, because of unusual lies or the fact that you straight up cannot see the pin from the tee.
--It plays in a great loop, that puts you right back to your car after 18.
--Super cool people running the place, that will play with you as a guide sometimes.

Cons:

--Natural Teepads on every hole
--Paths are sometimes hard to find
--Signage is there, but not totally obvious on every hole.
--Some of the course is still full of cut down which can make a shank difficult to get to
--Sometimes there is no good way to get to the basket, even if you are smack in the middle of the fairway.
For additional explanation on this see below:

Other Thoughts:

Honestly, here's the deal with WonderVu. All of the cons listed above are a work in progress. They are working on getting everything adjusted, built up better and turn it really into a destination of Colorado Disc Golf. This course is going to be amazing. It's already amazing, but some people really hate that natural feel and really demand concrete tee pads, but this course is absolutely worth a play, or 2 or 40. It's $3 to play, which honestly is too low. All of the profit goes directly back into the course. Hop on the Facebook page, call for a tee-time and wander up to WonderVu. Like my title says, this course is on it's way to greatness, and if you want it there faster, go play it and throw them some cash. In no time at all this place will be incredible.

Wonderful Wondervu 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:Jul 21, 2017 Played the course:2-4 times

Pros:

+ Baskets in decent shape, even the Discatcher Sports on 10 & 11

+ Signage is great for a new, wooded course. Tees have hole number & distance, plus there are plenty of arrows to point you in the right direction between holes

+ Plays a loop currently, no real threat of crossing fairways

+ Rough isn't too bad for a course carved out of virgin woods

+ Benches/couches at most if not all tees, trash and recycling also present

+ Great use of elevation, foliage and trees; decent mix of distances and a variety in shots needed - excellent challenge, you definitely need some accuracy and precision here

Cons:

**A lot of these are temporary - the course is still in its infancy and work days on the course continue**

- Still a lot of stumps/wood on the ground, and a fair few slash piles (these will eventually be gone, but sometimes they're handy in stopping a disc from rolling downhill)

- lack of really open holes, or open, long bombers (it's by nature a woody course though)

- If somehow you're not playing with a guide I can see how navigation might get a little tricky, and there's no map available for the time being

- natural tees - not really an issue, I'm reaching on this one

Other Thoughts:

Wondervu is a relatively young course still going through growing pains - currently there are 11 holes w/ plans to add more. I enjoyed it immensely, it's got the great challenge of a wooded course which is something the immediate area is sorely lacking. While woody, it's not the kind of course that you run the risk of hitting a tree 5 feet from the tee, as long as you hit your line your real threats are the trees that have been kept for a reason - there's obviously been a lot of thought put into it. If you've gotten used to short, flat courses like Johnny Roberts or the back 11 of Valmont, or mostly open courses like Fehringer, it's refreshing to have to negotiate these fairways, I admit I was really rusty my first time out.

It is a private course though, on private property, so make sure to send a message to them on facebook to arrange a day/time to play. People going unannounced will be greeted by a closed gate at the road so don't waste your time.

All in all I really enjoyed myself (despite my personally abysmal playing) and can't wait to go back. There's a donation box at tee 1 which gets directly reinvested into the course. It's still a work-in-progress but judging from what's here already, I can't wait to see what's added.
