Tall Barb Wire Fence Sucks 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Oct 15, 2018 Played the course:once

Pros:

At 3233' this is very long for a 9 hole, which is nice. Playing it twice is 6466' (but that will never happen). If you have a strong forehand you might even enjoy hole 5. Most holes have a concrete walking path for a teepad. Some of the baskets lean but still catch ok. The grass and trees are nice and so is Dayton weather.

Cons:

This is not a destination course. It is only meant for the military housing neighborhood. Adding the 9 baskets in is arguably better than just the walking path by itself.

Not IF, but WHEN your discs go over the OB barb wire fence on most fairways, they are gone for good. Dont even think about it. You seriously dont want to mess with the military. Being that concerned for my plastic is not very fun golf. Also throwing toward housing and cars is also uncomfortable and also not fun.

Lastly, hole 2 is a 530 narrow tunnel that plays BLIND down a walking path. It is almost unplayable without a spotter for safety reasons. I say almost bc we saw no walkers or even other golfers.

Other Thoughts:

The course plays clockwise around a landfill. The landfill itself is neither smelly nor is it unsightly. It is just the barb wire fence that is the major turnoff.

If I lived there I would walk over and play it on occasion with expendable discs. However, if you cant walk to this course, just drive somewhere else to play. Anywhere else. Sorry.

Pros:

The Wright Field DGC is located around an old fenced in landfill and bordering a residential area. Doesn't sound good? You're right. It's not. There's a couple tight tunnel shots though. I mean, they play blind down a walking/biking path but there's two of them.

There are 9 baskets here. It says they're Chainstars. They aren't. I have no idea what they are but they're not great. They have 2 rows of not many chains and they're silver. Easy to spot I guess. That's a pro. One position per hole.

Tee pads are natural except the ones that are by the sidewalk. So 3 paved and 6 natural I think. One tee per hole.

The signs are blue plastic that have basic hole info. Hole #, distance, par and a very basic hole diagram. Basically the direction the basket is located.

It doesn't take long to play and is free. That's all I got for pros.

Cons:

Where to start? Let's start off with the "tunnel" shots. These have you throwing down a walking path. Blind I might add. Absolutely unsafe and ridiculous design.

It plays around a landfill surrounded by barbed wire fences. The last 3 holes actually kind of play in a few backyards. One hole has the basket gaurded by a huge electrical tower. So if you lose a disc over the fence you're almost certainly not getting it back. And I'm pretty sure it's a federal offense to climb the fence.

The baskets are cheap and don't catch very good...at all. They also aren't all mounted level.

Some of the tee signs show the actual direction of the basket. Some show the opposite.

Other Thoughts:

I have no clue who thought putting a course here was a good idea. It's not. I played this because it was close to my hotel and Handyman ACE Hardware DGC. And I thought it would be cool to play a course by Wright-Patterson. Unless you're a course bagger like myself I wouldn't even bother with this one. There's nothing really redeeming about this one. Do yourself a favor and find something, anything other than this one.

If you throw Wright, don’t throw Right! 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:Mar 26, 2018 Played the course:2-4 times

Pros:

If I lived nearby, I would definitely appreciate the effort put in by the folks who added a course here. I might even play it from time to time. Tee signs are clear and almost always helpful for distance and flight path. The tees use the asphalt paths. The baskets are decent (12+6 chain) Chainstars in pretty good condition. And there are a couple of really fun throws here for my bourgeoning intermediate level skill set.

The highlight is probably the downhill, left-fading, 395' hole 4, where you're pretty sure you can put it out into the grass and fading toward the basket, 'hiding' behind the legs of the high-tension tower. Now, if you LIKE stress and aren't worried about which discs you might lose, there are several more that might suit your tastes (see cons).

Cons:

The ever-present chain link fence with barbed wire on top (and tight on your right hand side on holes 1, 2, 3, 5, 6, 7, 8 & 9) will give you gut-checks on windy days, and make you choose between the risk of losing a disc (not to mention a stroke), or staying conservative with controlled shots the whole way. Hole distances tend to be in the range where intermediates and above -could- go for the green, but most players will attack this design by putting short, controlled shots in the middle, halfway there or more, and repeatedly playing 1) controlled drive, 2) upshot, 3) tap in or reasonable putt. Except on hole 2, which is smartly played with TWO controlled shots before the upshot.

Not only do you have impenetrable barbed wire most of the way, but the center of your fairway is the asphalt path (or crosses it) on holes 1, 2, 3, the first part of 4, cross on 5, and definitely 9. Then you have streets or back yard fences to your left on holes five through nine. Players please note most of the tees are right next to the previous basket, so be sure it's clear before you throw. Finally, not a big deal, but the 7th basket doesn't have much concrete in its base, and tends to lean one way or another, making for a frustration-filled chain out putt after you worked so hard to avoid the barbed wire all the way up the up-sloping fairway.

Other Thoughts:

I came on a breezy March day, and started out making sure my drive on hole one never got above the fence line, and intentionally faded it halfway round the fairway. Then I saw hole two was even tighter, with woods and a slope off to the left, and over 500 feet to go. Conservative (boring) 4 was what I played for.

Again, I appreciate ALL courses, this one included. I just hope they have an agreement with the maintenance folks to retrieve and return all the discs that will go inside fences, yards, streets, etc. when the average player tries to partake. (Be sure to put your contact information on discs you DO want returned!)

Disc-eater Extrordinaire 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:Oct 27, 2017 Played the course:once

Pros:

This course is setup around the old landfills by base housing off Kauffman. It's only 9 holes, and you can fit it in over your lunch hour if you work nearby. Baskets are good, and grass is always in great shape.

Cons:

The OB. This is the worst OB I've ever seen, with tall barbed-wire fences surrounding the old landfills, and locked gates preventing disc recovery. Worst of all, the designers built the course intentionally so that most holes incorporate them. It would be like having a kite-flying course built around Charlie Brown's tree. The course hasn't been in the ground that long, but there are already multiple sad, orphaned discs inside missing their owners.

Signage is confusing and not even oriented toward the basket half the time. The Hole 3 tee sign indicated a right-to-left shot, but it's actually a straight/slight left-to-right one.

Other Thoughts:

It looks like this course was built for base workers and residents of that set of base housing, but the OB makes it really too challenging for all but the most experienced players. And they have much better options in the area. Can't say I'm in any hurry to play it again.

Nine holes at Wright-Pat AFB 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Oct 19, 2017 Played the course:once

Pros:

Well kept 9 hole course. Grass will always be mowed. Easy to navigate without a map.

Cons:

Out of bounds = lost disc. If its over the fence in the former landfill area you won't be getting your disc back. Out of bounds in play left and right on 1, right on 2, 7, 8, and 9. If its windy better keep your throws low to the ground.

Other Thoughts:

There is an asphalt walking path around much of the course. On Holes 2, 3, and 4 the path IS the fairway, so I would treat the paths as in play. Just watch for walkers/joggers. When I played I did not see any.
The course is adjacent to base housing, although it is not behind a gated area of the Air Force base. Civilians can play. Since you have to park on a base housing street, be respectful.
