[Mids] Looking for a shallow rimmed mid-range

Have you tried a fan grip with your mids?

Yes. This is the only way I can throw the Buzzz with any control whatsoever. But I just don't have a lot of confidence in the Buzzz and would like to try something else.

Taking your suggestions, I compared descriptions and flight characteristics published on the CGC website and think I have narrowed my choices down to either a Super Stingray or King Cobra.

Super Stingray:
2 4 5 -1 1

Best Choice for: Right turning shots, wooded courses, turnover shots, beginner disc, medium to long range roller.

About the Super Stingray: The Super Stingray is a large diameter disc that has a very slight turn and excellent glide. It has a shallow rim that makes it easy to grip for smaller hands and allows for a smooth consistent release. The Super Stingray is also an excellent disc for mid to long range roller shots.

King Cobra:
2 4 5 0 2

Best Choice for: All-around disc, wooded courses, turnover shots, tight wooded shots, beginner disc, smaller hands.

About the King Cobra: The King Cobra is a predictable mid-range large diameter disc that is easy to grip. It is very beginner friendly with a long and useful lifespan. The King Cobra is a great disc choice for long, straight controlled approaches and drives. The thin rim is great for smaller hands and creates a clean predictable release. The King Cobra is the more stable version of the Cobra.

Maybe someone can chime in but isnt a Cobra a beaded Stingray? Then a DX Cobra is a Champ Super Stingray? Then what is the King Cobra?

I found the Mako3 to be very easy to throw, and I'm almost 50, with smaller hands.

Innova Mako or Coyote. Even the Atlas has a pretty shallow rim. Of the three(which I have thrown each) I like the Coyote the most. It is a neutral stable to understable beadles mid-range. It is a very easy disc to learn how to use and will do most jobs quite well. Headwinds can be a little tricky, but with proper release angle it will fly in a headwind.

The Coyote and Mako would be good discs to try out, not exactly shallow but the rim shape is very comfortable to grip. You could also look at the Discmania GM, it is pretty shallow but a little wider than a traditional mid so it might work for you.

Definitely go with the stingray. Super stingrays are a little harder to find, but you should be able to get dx or star stingrays anywhere. These discs are super under rated and grate for any kind of wooded course. The wedge is another good option, and another disc that's worth checking out is a Cro.

Ignore all other answers and buy a Gateway Element in base plastic (sure grip). Cheap, comfortable grip in all weather, and it will outglide your Buzzz. :)

+1. Panther is basically a mid version of the Leopard. Great disc. Skeeter is fun too, more understable.

I cant believe I forgot about the skeeter. I started with the skeeter as my main mid. As I developed my snap and arm speed it taught me angles like no other disc could imo. It is a small diameter easy to grip mid that is very versatile. The only thing it can not do imo is handle a headwind. Other than that it is a good little disc with great glide.

Actually from what I've heard they are discontinuing the normal star stingray, super stingrays are a regular production champion mold now, so they shouldn't be too hard to find.

DX cobra and Champ super stingray are different discs, and the King Cobra has a blunter nose than the current DX Cobras.

Tursas. Has a shallow rim, plus the leading edge is flat not knife edged if you know what I mean. Most comfortable disc I have put in my hands.

Try a Discraft Impact. It is fairly shallow and has a zero flight rating like magnet so it is a very neutral flyer.

one nobody has talked about that is a great beginners disc and is good for small hands is a Skeeter. I bought one for that reason, but I don't use it much because it doesn't seem to love torque so it isn't a great forehand disc.

Stingray is pretty hard to beat unless it is a headwind or downhill shot. For those, you can just power down a driver for mid distance if you don't have an overstable mid. Actually, Des Reading also showed us at a clinic how to hyzer flip a stingray into headwind. I tried it and it works. I just give it a little more hyzer to cancel the headwind.

From my experience, most all of the Gateway mids are pretty shallow. Also, the MVP Tangent is pretty shallow, noticeably more so to me than the Atlas mentioned up thread.

Buzzz is pretty shallow. Stratus is a little smaller, but it's closer in flight to a Leo than a Buzzz. Tursas might fit, but really, I don't see much of a way around getting comfortable with a rim as deep as a Buzzz.

Would anyone consider anything that's been suggested in this thread a "great" mid like a Roc or Buzzz is?

I wouldn't consider most of the discs that people have said smaller than the Buzzz. Fuse is about the same. So is the Impact, Skeeter, and Meteor ...
