[Discmania] Love my FD’s but

Anyone have any real world experience with a Prodigy F5?

By the numbers it may be a little more understable than the FD but you really can't always go by the numbers.

Are Prodigy discs fairly consistent in how they mold up from run to run?

I've had consistency issues with F5's and F7's.

I do bag a couple of F5's now, because I've found a few (in 400) whose inconsistencies I can use. One's pretty straight like my old FD (S), the other is more OS. Then I have a 400G that weight 10g more, and is crazy flippy...

I really want to like Prodigy, but I think once my current stash outlives its usefulness, I'm gonna move on...

Well, there's a new store that opened up not far from me a month ago. Had a chance to stop and check it out and fondle a few discs in person. Unfortunately they mostly stock Innova and have a small assortment of Discraft and a very small selection of Trilogy stuff and no other brands.

Anyhow, I picked up a TL to try out but I'm guessing I likely won't stick with it. They had about ten of them and some were relatively flat, some kind of a mild dome, and a few were very domey. Pretty much the same Innova inconsistency that irks me about the FD. I grabbed one with little dome and I'll see how it flies.

Also, I grabbed an ESP Stalker to try out. I don't expect it to fill my FD spot but who knows. I did like the fact that of the ten or so they had on hand they all looked identical as far as how they molded up.

Didya feel up any S-FDs while you were there? Tell the truth.

Ten of any single Discraft mold (besides a Flick) is pretty rare, unless you got there on mail day, maybe.

I find it funny how people love to complain about Innova inconsistency, but ignore the evidence of other manufacturer's variances. It's even in this thread. Run to run differences are a fact of life, and if you disagree, give it 5 years with your new sweetheart brand.

Well, I'm glad I can amuse you.

I do get that there are a lot of variables that come into play with injection molding and that getting results that are repeatable time after time isn't always possible. And that goes for all of the disc manufacturers.

I do think there are certain molds that do tend to mold up more consistently from run to run especially in certain plastics.

My game isn't at the level where I can competently throw just any disc. For me, the feel of the disc in my hand is important and helps me to get the disc out of my hand cleanly and on good angles. I just struggle with really domey discs.

I suppose the easiest solution for me would to just buy discs in person where I can see and feel them. Most of the time though I don't have time to make the hour long drive one way to a good store so end up ordering online and hoping for the best.

I stopped throwing FD's for this reason. In my experience the newer runs are more overstable, not what I'm looking for in this slot, and not how they still describe the FD on the Discmania website.

Right now I'm throwing an Opto River for this slot but I'm not 100% sure what I think about it yet.

The Drift looks intriguing. How does it compare to an Opto River?

So, looks like I'll be hitting a different disc store today. This one carries a big variety of brands and typically has a decent inventory on hand.

Since I grabbed a TL yesterday I'll probably grab a few others to test out based on some of the recommendations here.

I'll see where they have but the Drift has been mentioned here several times so I'd like to see some in person. Probably grab a Leopard 3 and maybe a TL3. I'll look into the Prodigy F5 because based on some videos I watched it seems to have a flight pretty similar to the FD.

Might peek at the Teebirds too. My wife throws DX birds and I remember throwing hers and thinking they flew pretty similar to a fresh FD but with a little more finish. My wife only plays maybe five times a year but I probably average two rounds a week so DX doesn't interest me that much but maybe I can check out some star or champ ones knowing it will be a while before they fly anything like the FD.

Very nice! Be sure to post your findings. I have a 150g Star Teebird, and it will turn just a bit (not very beat in), but has ALL the fade. FWIW, Infinite Discs reviews of the TL3 rate it having more turn than a TL. I picked up a misprint Maverick to try for $11. My first golf set was the 5pack prime burst from DD. I threw that maverick well until it became a barrel roll machine. I don't hit quite as many trees now, so hoping the Fuzion lasts.

The FD is quite consistently domey in my experience. If you got flat ones then they should be considered freaks, they are not like the average FD. If you like flat discs then don't fall in love with FDs

Well, the trip to the store was kind of a bust. Plenty of inventory but not many discs over 170 and I prefer stuff on the heavier end.

I did pick up two Drifts to try out. I got one in Neutron and one in Proton. Very FDish in the hand despite the more traditional concave lower wing.

Yeah I've tried to bag the FD last year. Had two sline FDs that were lower 170s. Both weren't new but not beat in by any means. Like others have stated the new embossed FDs fly on the os side of things. What I was looking for is a disc in-between my stalker and heat in the fairway group. These embossed FDs flew similar to my stalker. I've since put a star leopard in the bag and it's exactly what I was looking for.

750 F5 would be my siggestion. I like the 400 as well but it would be more River-like (but better feeling in the hand imo).

Update.

Gave the Drift a try. Reminded me of a River with a much better feel in the hand. It's a little flippier than I was suspecting. Super easy to hyzer flip but I found it a bit unpredictable. The glide is pretty crazy and this thing just stays in the air forever. Rivers are FDs have surprising glide but the Drift might have them both beat in that department.

I brought along a new ESP Stalker but only threw it once. I feel like I sent it out flat but it had a lot less high speed stability than I expected and drifted right a lot more than I thought it would. I definitely need to throw it more to see what I think.

I have a couple of Prodigy F5s coming but I guess they're held up in some sort of winter event back east.

Keep up the good work! So I blame you mostly (and lack of weather to throw at all), but I have a Gstar Eagle-L, Gstar TL and a Champ TL3 en route. My list to try out:
Relay
FD
Maverick
Eagle-L
TL
TL3

A friend of mine has an Opto Explorer that's beat to fly like a -1/1.5 within 4 months, granted he plays almost every day. Trilogy plastic isn't the most durable though.

I think from what I have read or seen mostly the Dynmic Disc plastic is not durable, Latitude 64 and Westside last longer from what I have read or seen.

Another to try is the Stalker in Z, though that flies like a Eagle-X bran new in DX. That is how I liked the mold for myself. Another is try the Champion Viking but that will be a little more OS then the TL at a -1|2 for turn and fade rather then TL being -1|1. Also they make a DX Viking but that ends up quickly a Valkyrie in flight.
