Here's my review of the Mahal.
Received it about 4 days after I ordered it (I live in OH), opted for the USPS shipping because it was a few bucks cheaper.
Bag arrived in perfect condition. Read through the fitting booklet and proceeded to load it up. With all the pockets expanded I had the following in the bag.
Main Compartment: 16 Drivers comfortably
Side Compartment 1: 4 Putters and 4 Mids (pretty tight but workable)
Side Compartment 2: Some Extra Towels, a Sweatshirt, and a lighter long sleeve shirt.
2 32oz water bottles
2 more towels in one of the additional zipper pockets
candy, misc, etc in the other additional zipper pockets.
Stool strapped to the front.
And I tried putting the umbrella (unsuccessfully, see cons) in the space on the side with the little velco straps.
I then removed the umbrella and stool so I could attempt to fit the bag.
I'm a pretty tall guy, about 6'-6'1'' and relatively lean at 185 lbs. I have a longer torso than most guys my size. (this will be relevant with the fitting).
Mystery Ranch says that puts me into a Medium Yoke, and that's what I got.
I followed the instructions, the bag was not real comfortable. I took it on a few walks around the block to see if it would settle. Alas, no improvement. The bag simply rode way to high on my back. So I contacted Mystery Ranch, and spoke to a rep named Lora. She was very helpful, I sent them pictures of the bag on my back and they came back with some suggestions.
I lowered the yoke and the bag rode a little lower, we tried multiple positions. I completely reset the bag, took everything out and fitted it empty. Again the bag was too high when following the booklet, so I lowered it per Lora's advice. I put everything back in and carried it around the block, it still wasn't comfortable.
I ended up returning the bag because we tried everything and it just didn't work for me. I ate the shipping cost both ways to do so.
Lora and the mystery ranch team were great, all very helpful and friendly. Often calling me the next day to see how things went with the adjustments and didn't try to put me off returning it at all. I would do business with them again in a heartbeat.
Here's my overall thoughts and the reason way the bag was not comfortable for me.
Pros:
Extremely well made, great fabric, obviously built to last, looks really slick.
Basically waterproof, no umbrella needed to protect your discs.
Versatile design, can make it bigger/smaller as needed, would be an acceptable day pack off the disc golf course if needed as well.
Tons of storage, as much as any competitor bag IMO
Yoke system does redistribute the weight in a positive way (if the Futura Yoke is comfortable for you, see cons)
Cons:
Comfort - With the chest strap and the waist belt buckled it was great, without them it was not comfortable for me. My torso was just a little to long for the futura yoke system to keep the weight of a fully loaded bag on me correctly and I found it extremely heavy when compared to the same amount of weight just loaded into a Jansport backpack. I didn't plan on needing to keep these strapped at all times, it just wasn't practical to do so between throws and this is the main reason I am returning the bag.
Design Flaw - The side slots for umbrella and/or water bladder use now have an obscene amount of velco in there. I did not see that on reviews on youtube so I'm thinking its a new addition. It starts from the top of the pouch and continues to the bottom of the bag, approx 7 inchs. Its very strong velco too. It made placing the umbrella handle or a water bladder inside almost impossible.
Room for improvement - There is a ton of extra space in the top area of the main compartment above the discs, not a con, but they could have used this in some way.
Room for improvement - There is no feet on the bottom of the bag, not a big deal considering the fabric durability, but I feel for $260 it could have some feet.
Lastly, the bags are not made in the USA as we have discussed recently. Mystery Ranch apologized for the mix up on the website, and it should be corrected in the future. They also more than made up for it with the level of customer service I received. The bag quality is also top notch. I will be a return customer, just wish the Mahal had worked for me.
Overall, I would recommend trying one on in person first. It could be the last bag you ever need, or you could not like it and be out the cost of shipping. Best of luck!
