COVID-19 Course Closures

Flat Rock Park in Columbus, GA had gates closed. Assumed it's closed. Moved on the Tyus and Don Shannon Memorial in Griffin, GA. Both open. Even ran into a group of 10 mob golfers drinking beer and blasting music. Looked like they were enjoying themselves.

Bernie Sanders dropped out after 4 weeks of socialism! Quit trying to control others. It won't work, and you will be sitting at home unhappy.

The fact they were enjoying themselves is irrelevent.

We have had around 50 deaths here, as a nation, we are more spread out then nearly every country on the planet...and have way less disc golfers out on courses. Yet, for the most part, Disc Golfers here are playing a part and staying at home and not playing.

2000 deaths a day there, and people think the rules and warnings dont apply to them.

This pandemic has shown to me the dark under side of DG, and Im glad Im backing away from the sport. I have 27 holes at my disposal but havent played once since this all began.

I agree with most of what you're saying but...

If there's a dark under side of disc golf it's no different than the rest of society. There's nothing magical about disc golf that makes it's participants any better or worse than the rest of society.

I've noticed on some of the local club pages, people are searching across the region to find courses that are still open. There's been a lot of 'I'm so bored' posts on the pages. Then when people ask about volunteer work at the courses, these same people suddenly are too busy. Are people really that bad?

Maybe it's just because you have so many disc golfers in your town, that if 5% of them are covidiots, it still amounts to a noticeable number. But, boy, there sure are some on your local FB page.

I don't have time to look back through this whole thread but saw someone say a course in Boulder, CO was closed (Valmont).

I'm a little surprised as the governor keeps encouraging people to get outside and exercise and get fresh air (so long as you keep distance and don't get in big groups)...

I posted that closure. I was on my way to meet a friend to play when she texted me saying it was closed.

I don't know if it was a state mandated closure (probably not), or if the local club closed it.

Or volunteer at the local food pantry, hospital, nursing home, blood donation, animal shelter.... No, you won't see it. Putting the needs of others, before your need for instant gratification, is an adult response.

I keep waiting for Huey or one of the other club leaders to say one of the courses is open - Hornets Nest, Nevin, etc. When the caravan shows up to play, hand them shovels, loppers, trash bags instead. If our parents could trick us into going to the dentist when we were kids, why not use the same tactic to get some help on the courses?

You're saying I was actually acting like an adult when I was a jerk little kid?

The same thought crossed the mind of a certain private course owner I'm familiar with.

Disagree, I think they are worse.

Odd my post got 1 upvote, reply mostly agreeing got 7, like wtf

Reason being that based on our observations, we think DG'ers are relatively representative of the population in general. I've seen groups besides DG'ers not follow social distancing recommendations. Jay Dub's post calls that out.

Maybe you've seen different where you live.

Don't ball golfers reach into a small plastic cup to retrieve the holed-out projectile of their sport? I'd have to think that's as bad of a scenario than a metal basket being touched by hundreds of other covidiot strangers. Plus, there's the flag pole too.

Honestly, both golf sports shouldn't be played publicly until this disease isn't spreading. It's not going to be anytime soon. I'd be surprised if Disc Golf got going again, just being allowed in public parks let alone mass gatherings such as tournaments, for any of the warm weather months ahead of us in 2020. That's a sobering thought. Glad I have my own basket and a field to throw in. I can't imagine not getting to hear chains for as long as this scourge is going to last.

If there was ever a time when the friendly Frisbee Family aspect of this game is necessary to keep spirits afloat, this is it. Love you all!

I posed the same thought elsewhere, and was told that (at least some) golf courses are filling the holes with a plug that sticks up above ground level---effectively playing object golf.

(To which, naturally, I mused how I'd love to count my putts that just hit the basket)

Dayum! I've always wanted to go to Australia but if disc golfers are as bad as you say down under I'll save my money for something else.

I'll make sure I give you an upvote some day to help with your concern. ;)
