[Discraft] Comet love?

...Comet is more the putter of mids to me...
You know what? You're right. That is why I like it so much. I love putters and throw them for shots when most are throwing mids or even drivers. Putters rule. A midrange that throws like a putter? Perfect-o! Sign me up!

Does anyone else have a suggestion for the Comet of drivers?

the mantis fits that description, for me at least. Enough stability to be able to lock on straight from a hyzer flip with some power, but will hold most any line if you throw it clean. Easy to finesse lines through the woods and still get good distance. Of course, it's still a driver, so it's a little more low speed sensitive, but it fits the bill pretty accurately.

My Comet out-putters my putters. It powers down so well and finishes straighter than my putters. Other than my Polecat, that is.

For me it is Westside Seer. Really nice hyzerflips up to 325ft.

I'd say FD is more the Buzzz of drivers. Little wiggle right and left, neutral-straight, holds any line, can be powered up or down.

Comet is more the putter of mids to me, you can throw it straight/flat and overtop of shorter trees and let it nestle down rather than really fade even at height. Whereas Buzzz style mids and FD for example you want to line drive under the branches.

yup

I can get away with using a comet in situations where I would have normally used an US putter

Think I may be starting to see the comet in a new light. Was sitting bored at the house and went out to the yard to toss my new comet around. This thing is amazing for low power upshots. Was easily parking 100' uphill shots with minimal effort. Downhill this thing was flying 200' easy on a super low power shot. Can't wait to get out to the field and test it a bit more since I removed the flashing since last time.

If I want a comet type shot shape but it's too far away (325-400ft) my #1 suggestion would be a 170-175g Z Heat. MJ even says so himself.

Honorable mentionables would be: River, Mantis, Roadrunner, Glide

Z Archer at ~170-171 grams I would put up there to compare to a lightweight upper 160's X plastic Comet.

yes. Comets are all about smoothly delivered power. Torque monkeys never like Comets because the disc won't do what they want... because they can't speak her language.

Speak to your Comet the way she wants you to talk and she will dance for you! Patience is key if you are learning to speak Comet. Many people get frustrated and walk away.

If you could only pair one other mid with your comet what would it be? I'm minimizing my bag setup to truly learn a few discs and I'm going down to 2 mids one of them being the comet.

I don't have a great answer for you.
My tactic is to get something overstable to complement. I have had a bunch of different discs in this slot and none have really stuck. A good overstable Roc or RocX3 works well because they are more overstable than the Comet without sacrificing too much glide. Also, they feel close to Comets in the hand. There are so many overstable mids out there its tough to make a recommendation. The Gator has some fans, the Hornet is good IMO, the Harp and Zone are popular putter/mid tweeners, and soooo many more.

If you are really into minimalism/learning to work discs, an alternate to an overstable mid is to throw a fairway driver a little softer. This works really well for some shots and not so much for other shots.

Hopefully others will have better recommendations.

A fresh KC Roc.

Feels similar too.

I threw that combo for a few years and have had no complaints.

160gish Roadrunner wins my vote for Comet of drivers.. The Stalker was very similar too but too stable.

Pairing a Comet with another mid really depends on what you bag for putters and fairway drivers. The thing I find best about my redundant Tangent / Comet combo is that the Tangent has a smaller wing or more rounded so it's less likely to grab extra air.

I used to use a ESP 170g Comet with a 178 Z and pack a Buzzz... went to a 174 glow Z and filled a lot of holes except short hard anhyzer shots so I pack a Spin.

Basically it comes down to wether or not I pair it with a more OS slower glidey mid with a similar hand feel(roc/ghost) or a higher speed driver like midrange( buzzz etc.) tough decisions! At least I know I want the comet! Never thought I'd be throwing Discraft.

Too much overlap between the Buzzz and the Comet. I would say the same for a DX Roc as well.
Going with only 2 discs for your mids, there needs to be a decent amount of flight difference, not just feel.

You mentioned the Ghost, in Icon plastic, it is almost as stable as a Wasp. Better pairing than a Roc.

There is nothing wrong with only carrying one mid and saving that space for another putter.
I have used the Comet-Envy Combo a lot playing 3 disc rounds. The Envy gets almost mid range distance anyway.

If anyone has a Ron Russell 2003 tour elite z comet for sale/trade please PM me. That is my money disc but I don't have a backup.
