Pros:
This is a private course on a farm out in a rural area. It has a distinctly rustic feel to it, with silos, barns, old equipment and the occasional cow as obstacles. Hole lengths are relatively short; 1-4 and 9 are open with some wiggle room, while 5-8 have you tucked in the woods and require tight lines to have a chance at birdie. The course map is accurate and made navigation a cinch. The baskets are brand new and look great. I was told that the layout was professionally designed. Beginner friendly.
Cons:
There's no denying that the course itself is a bit raw, lacking tee pads, signs, seating and garbage cans but I see this simply as room for improvement.
Being out in the flat plains of Illinois, the wind was ferocious and effected nearly every shot I took. I imagine when the crops are fully grown, they block some of the wind but conversely make stray throws difficult to find. Only Hole 4 is longer that 350 feet. Try to avoid cow pies.
The biggest thing going against this course is it's location; it's extremely remote and not near any major cities. It's a pretty safe bet that your group will be alone during the round.
Other Thoughts:
The owner, John, couldn't have been more welcoming. He provided me with a physical copy of the course map and seemed genuinely glad that I showed up (unannounced) to play. He told me there will soon be an elevated tree stump basket added on hole 2. He also mentioned that a fishing and camping area was nearby, just a couple miles to the Northeast.
Beaver Tail DGC stood out to me because of its unique setting and was flat-out fun to play- I haven't played a course quite like it (basket placement on the first couple holes is especially memorable). The welcome sign is super cool and there's a neat disc golf mural painted on one of the silos. Stopping here was well worth my time and I look forward to going back.
