An Interesting Mix

Reviewed: Played on:Aug 24, 2023 Played the course:once

Pros:

- well maintained park with a variety of foliage
- some tree hazards and a variety of prairie type hazards
- some decent length variety; all within the norm for suburban niners
- quality, high visibility Mach V baskets
- full color tee signs with serviceable maps
- nice size concrete tees
- dual tees, though not yet reflected on DGCR details
- some varied terrain with limited elevation changes
- no major safety hazards in this multi-use park
- navigation is mostly straightforward
- good use of next tee indicator between holes 2 and 3

Cons:

- holes 4 and 5 play along a very busy highway
- holes playing around soccer field aren't the greatest setup
- amenities are pretty limited
- some long searches for discs if you go into the prairie plants
- walk from hole 10 back to parking lot is very long

Other Thoughts:

Community Park West is an interesting course. They sure squeezed this in amongst the highway, soccer fields, walking paths, etc. but it doesn't play too badly overall. If you want to stop by Abt for some electronics, this is the course for you - it's right next door!

I'm always torn on these courses with lots of native prairie plants. On the one hand, it feels uniquely Illinois (Black Bear Park in Hoffman Estates does this best, perhaps), but the prairie and/or wetland courses can be immensely frustrating to play. I really don't enjoy looking for discs in tall grasses, and that can be a factor on many holes here. Others are pretty wide open and two play through a grove of young trees.

The equipment here is very good, with newer concrete tees and quality baskets. Navigation flowed well; the longer walks between holes 2-3 and 10-parking lot are not ideal but were not hard to figure out. There are walking paths around to be aware of; these present limited safety hazards but I don't think are high traffic. If soccer is going on, you just have to be aware of where your shots are likely to go. This is mostly an issue on hole 10 where you kind of throw towards the soccer field.

The limited elevation change is incorporated well and while there are a few longer holes, most are pretty moderate to short in distance. You won't need many long range drives here. This is a decent length nine hole that you aren't going to finish in 20 minutes, but it's nothing extreme.

This was a harder course for me to score. I can understand why 1.5s and 2.5s are both common. There's nothing too incredibly unique here, but it's a solid course with a decent design given the space, if a bit unconventional. In the corridor of bagging here in Chicago's north suburbs, this is one of the more respectable courses and worth a stop if you're picking up multiple niners. I don't think it's worth a trip out of the way, but it is fun enough.

Technical & Tight 2+ years drive by

Pros:

I like how the course is laid out around a couple of soccer fields and a dog park. Park is nicely maintained.

Cons:

For the beginner or recreational player(s), the course is very technical and narrow fairways so bring your A game.
Can easily loose a disc in the tall vegetation, dog park, ABT lot, or the fence that borders the highway.

Just add cement. 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Oct 22, 2011 Played the course:once

Pros:

The land is fairly flat and open. This is a heavily used and well kept multi use park. There are scattered trees throughout. Several of the baskets are located on the side of berms. A couple tees are slightly elevated too.

There is a practice basket near hole #1.

The baskets are orange Mach 5's & sweet looking! Each basket has the DGA flags on top marking 5, 10, & 15 mph wind.

Tee signs are pretty good and indicate OB on this course. Course map near hole #1.

The course has a variety of distances. I threw my putter, mids, fairway, and long range drvier. It's beginner friendly but has some longer holes that experienced players will like.

There are wood chip walkways leading to the next hole on a few of them.

There were next tee signs and out of bounds signs on the course.

Hole #3 is a really nice hole.

Hole #7 has 2 tees.

Cons:

The biggest con are the tee pads. The wood chips are very soft and hard to throw from.

Being a right hand back hand player I threw mostly flat shots and hyzers. There are no shot shaping to the right.

Other Thoughts:

Besides not having concrete tee pads this park district got the job done right. I thought the course maximized the potential of the land avaliable.

Beginner/Intermediate 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:Sep 14, 2011 Played the course:2-4 times

Pros:

- Course is set on the outskirts of a dog park and some soccer fields, with a walking path present on many holes. Might be some stray pedestrians, but the design keeps it clear from most interference.
- First three holes have a good amount of trees to avoid. #1's fairway is littered with saplings, #2 has a tight hyzer through a bunch of trees with thick rough, and #3 is a tunnel with lots of little trees on both sides. Some line shaping needed to avoid the trees; especially once they grow up a little. #4 has a gap to hit off the tee, and #6 forces a RHBH hyzer. Remainder of the holes are more out in the open, with lots of room to maneuver. More rough is present, though, especially near the baskets, to make things interesting. OB in spots also help to add challenge.
- Decent amount of elevation changes here, with some gently downsloping fairways on #1 and #2, an elevated teepad on #4, #7, and #9, and elevated greens on #7 and #8. Helps to add some fun and challenge to each holes, which would otherwise be pretty simple.
- Good variety in hole length; with a few around 200', and a few over 350'. Almost all players will be throwing putters and drivers throughout, which helps to mix things up. #8 plays even longer thanks to the elevated green.
- Good temporary signs, great baskets, mushy tees are a work in progress. Naviation is easy thanks to a map and informative signs.

Cons:

- A lot of the shots are are more or less wide open, with some rough being the only obstacle/challenge. The back half is pretty much a test of distance, and not much else.
- Definitely favors the RHBH player, with only a few shots that are blocked. The trees to the right of the tee on #4 and #9 are the only real obstacles to a RHBH hyzer.
- Teepads are in very rough shape right now, hopefully the woodchips will compact down a bit to provide some better footing.

Other Thoughts:

- Overall, the course has pretty good variety, with a few wooded shots, some fun elevation changes, and length for almost everyone. Some extremely thick rough might be a bit much for beginners, and it's a little straightforward for advanced players, except for driving practice.
