A nice first nine… 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:Nov 9, 2013 Played the course:2-4 times

Pros:

The nine hole disc golf course at Defiance College hosts new-looking Disc Nation Liberty (16 chains in one ring) baskets, wooden posts indicating the location of the natural tee areas, and weaves around the dormitory side of campus with holes ranging from 218 to 417 feet in length. The course, like the campus, is scenic, well-maintained, and is clearly intended for the casual to recreational level young person looking for a little exercise between studies.

It loops around in a mostly logical flow from the east side of the library, between and behind the residence halls, and back across a large field with a garden just to the north of the library. Hole 6 is a fun deuce hole with trees guarding your approach. Hole 7 is a nicely sized fade to the right near the trees. Since there were no next tee indicators, I took the liberty of adding a map to the site to help out folks playing here for the first time.

The holes themselves allow for a variety of lines to the basket through the park-like trees, and give you the option of carefully throwing over walkways or tightly up beside a couple of buildings, so you CAN challenge yourself with shot selection. Or, you may want to play all sidewalks OB, or declare mandos, if you want to get creative here.

Cons:

However, as with any college campus course, the disc golfers who play here have to remain alert and mature in their game, so as not to endanger folks who might be innocently traversing the sidewalks (on holes 2 & 3), exiting the most-used door of their dorm (! hole 4!), or using the recreational field (holes 4 & 5). Holes 2 & 4 play far too close to the corners of buildings, and you WILL eventually hit them. Hole 9 plays over (intending to go left, around) a fenced garden area, which is nice as an OB area, but a potential problem for the crops.

There are no next tee indicators, and only four of the holes have tee signs. The baskets are single ring types, which make putting interesting on a blustery day like I had (winds at 20mph gusting into the upper 30's). Finally, though most of the holes are decently nearby each other, there are some longer walks getting to hole 6 and back from hole 9.

Other Thoughts:

The campus clearly has some very nice land with rolling terrain, woods and a large pond over by the sports fields. If the college collaborated with the local disc golf community, and possibly negotiated with the folks who pulled the baskets at Independence Dam, there is a LOT of potential here to add a better nine holes in the future!

best course in defiance 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:May 31, 2012 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

A nice course on a pretty college campus
The course is well groomed and kept ,lightly wooded

Cons:

no bathrooms at all

Hole 2-3 has walking paths that are very busy during the school year and are a hazard

hole 4-5 are just long holes with baskets in a open area
hole 5's tee is one of my biggest issues with the course instead of putting the tee to one side the post is in the middle which would not be a problem if there wasn't sandwich between two trees in a tight area it gives room for a side arm shot but i get close to smashing my hand on a tree every time i play it and i have the same problem on 8's tee

hole 9 has a garden in the middle of the fairway (not a huge issue but disc could damage what there growing ) and its just a boring hole not a good way to end the course

Other Thoughts:

overall its a nice course with some minor quirks

heard a rumor to make it 18 holes
I hope the use the land the have out there ,it could be a great course

NEW 9 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:May 6, 2012 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

slight elevation changes and lightly wooded with the addition of some creative basket placements makes this a delightful challenge.
Holes arent super long but arent super short either...great horse for a 9 holer..hopefully they added some more in the future.

Cons:

1.only 9 holes
2.located on the campus so lots of non dg foot traffic.
3.hole 9 is kind of bland and awkward
4.single chan discnation baskets leave much to b desired.

Other Thoughts:

i really hope that the rumors of future expansion at this course come true..its got tons of potential and in its current state is quite a nice course to play in the defiance area..
