Very nice for a short course 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:Nov 1, 2020 Played the course:once

Pros:

First things first--this is a very short course, only one hole over 250', most under 200'. I think we need more beginner level courses, so I won't penalize a course simply because its not 6000' or more.
--Easy to find, plenty of parking, other activities at park.
--Nice park setting.
--Great map at beginning of course (needed, because holes are so close together.
--Concrete tee pads--some short, but most players will be standing still anyway.
--Very flat (I think a pro for a beginner level course).
--Nice newer Prodigy baskets. They catch well--it was very windy, so our putts had some mustard on them.
--Most baskets have clear next tee signs.
--Park seem well maintained.
--Bathrooms present (not sure if open, did not need to use).
--Tee signs present on every hole, though distance seems a bit over-stated on a few.

Cons:

--Course layout is VERY congested, worst I have seen. On some tees there were literally 3 baskets that appeared reasonable to be shooting toward. Honestly, this should have just been a 9 hole course.
--Most fairways adjacent to one or more other holes, so have to look around on most throws to ensure no one is teeing off or walking across your possible flight path.
--Most holes are just straight shots--even on a short course, some different types shot selection is good. A few trees to shoot around perhaps, but no real hyzer or turn shots required.
--Park itself is crowded--not a con for a park, glad to see folks out, but its a con for this course because several times we had to politely ask people if we could throw.

Other Thoughts:

Taking this course for what its worth, its one of the nicer short courses I have played, a great place to take even a young child. If they (or you) can throw even 80', pars are possible. I would even think its mostly wheelchair accessible, which is rare in a DG course. There are a few creek crossings, but there are bridges and paths.

Certainly not a destination course, but if you live in the area, and need a family friendly or pitch and putt course, this is in the top 5 of ones I have played.

If this was not so congested, with potential risk of getting hit (even a 225' throw can have some mustard on it), it would warrant a 3.5 stars. If you know the course, and it is empty, it would play almost as a 4 star---again, for a short course. The enjoyment though is eroded by having to worry on every hole about hitting someone, throwing at the correct basket, or getting hit by someone else. Other than that, a quite enjoyable little course and park.

Improved 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:Sep 15, 2013 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

Easy to get to if you are around Kingsport and you want to try out disc golf. ***(2017) Someone put the effort in to put numbers on the pins and paint each basket a bright, easy to spot yellow. It has really improved the course.***

Cons:

1. No signs showing the layout of a hole.
2. No signs showing how to get to the next hole.
3. Most of the baskets are unmarked and those marked have a small number painted on the pole ***(fixed 2017 with numbers on top)***.
4. When I played there were a number of trees with white markings on them that made me wonder if they were supposed to be mandatories. One definitely was, but I still don't know about the others ***(fixed: all mandos now have white arrows).***
5. More than once, I threw at a basket from the tee and when I got to my disc looked up and saw two baskets that could actually be the one I should be throwing at.

Other Thoughts:

This is not a terrible course. Download the map from here and take it with you because you will need it.

Experienced golfers will bypass this in favor of Winged Deer or Warriors Path. Serious beginners would be better served driving to Steele Creek. ***(2017) The improvements have made the course much better. Currently, I use this as my warm-up course Friday night after work and then go on to play Winged Deer/Warrior's Path/Steele Creek/Sugar Hollow on Saturday.***

***The course could still use better signs at the tee showing which basket to throw at (particularly 7) and where the next tee is or at least a sign with a map at the first tee, but someone is putting a lot of TLC into this course and I wouldn't be surprised to see those improvements over the next year or two.***

Nice Little Course 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Nov 24, 2008 Played the course:once

Pros:

Well kept, tees marked, central location. Rotary club did a great job setting up another course in the Kingsport area.

Cons:

Course is just slightly confusing. The tees are well laid out and marked, along with distance, but they don't always follow each other, logically.

Other Thoughts:

I don't live in Kingsport, havent in over 10 years, but it's nice to see this course. It's bordered by factories, including an abandoned textile mill, and housing that was originally provided by the factories for workers. This is a nice little course, and I will definately be back to play it again next time I am in town.
