The Mental Mastering of Gateway 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Aug 8, 2012 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

This course has since the first Hangover Classic been my favorite course in the Metroplex. I know at times this course has been rough. I have seen past all of that and really enjoyed everything about this park (except some of the patrons) with all of the shots needed to score well out there. Shout out to Brandon and everyone else that has put in tons of non payed hours to make this course shine. The course has a feeling that you are all alone but it is one exit away from downtown Fort Worth. Did I mention that this course requires a wide selection of shots. This is the reason I have learned the forhand because you cant always score well with a backhand out here. Another aspect I really enjoy that is rare in the Metro is long wooded hole and wooded to open holes. Most holes have multiple routes to take. The locals have done a ton of clearing and plan on more to showcase what this course is under some of the overgrowth! This course is a mental test on every hole that has left me blown away when it gets the best of me. Mental focus is key to manage this course.

Cons:

Bugs can be bad during the summer months because of the standing water on a couple of holes There are some creepy people that park in the parking lot that are not disc golfers but are there for ANOTHER REASON. Use the Buddy system. The more action the course has the less people like this will hang around. They need Tee Signs. There is a bad smell on hole seven once in a while, but its not the hole course.

Other Thoughts:

Every time I come out there are more locals playing it. I think over time the more course play this park gets the more the overfriendly patrons will start to find another park to hug at. The Media Picture are not current so dont go by those as thing are way diffrent at the present as far a fairway conditions!

Gateway 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:Mar 5, 2012 Played the course:2-4 times

Pros:

Very challenging course. You will use almost every shot in your bag on this course. Great mix of wooded/open shots and some elevation change as well.

Cons:

Unfortunately I tend to feel that the cons tend to outweigh the pros on this course.
- It is not well kept up, so it is rough, unkept ground in most places.
-Pretty overgrown & some areas are very densely wooded leading to at least a few lost discs.
-I actually know of two different people who were jumped and pretty savagely beaten in this park (both were biking, not disc golfing) - I think the city has done a pretty decent job cleaning up the park since this happened so its probably less of an issue now. But its still is not in the best of neighborhoods (Just don't pay this course by yourself).

Other Thoughts:

This is a well designed course. I wish it would have a little better upkeep, and that the park would feel a little safer.

***Update*** I have yet to return to the course but I understand that the Funkytown Flyers have put in a significant amount of work in improving this course. Including but not limited to scraping fairways and trimming brush. So my previous statements regarding the state of upkeep of the course may no longer be accurate. Thanks to the Funkytown Flyers for the hard work.

work in progress 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Jul 26, 2012 Played the course:once

Pros:

*concrete tees (backwards)
*going to need alot of shots,
*mostly wooded so shot selection is must, not just a chunk and go course
*nice baskets
*didnt feel like i was in downtown, very outdoorsey feel
*trees make for good coverage from 100 degree days maybe only 2 or 3 open holes
*upper level course play-the most challenge i have had in awhile
*no real easy holes
*good use of land, but be ready to walk
*good use of left hooks and right hooks

Cons:

*signage,
*not easy to navigate first time, as a few holes had to be "found"/map on site is off scale a bitalot of blind shots and walking around like a lost puppy looking for next tee (total game time was almost 3 hrs for us today, i feel we took 45 mins just looking for tees today)
*shared mt bike trails,so watch out for them
*can be a disc eater (several areas are densly wooded)
*can be a bit trashy around some tees
*stay in the fairway or your legs will pay the price (thorns, etc)
*hole 5 to 6 had awful smells, only time ever noticed
*is a public city park, so all sorts of people are there (even the undesirables, but there is enough other people there to keep in check, i would suggest playing in atleast pairs)

Other Thoughts:

I know ive been hard with the cons, but i still give it a 3.5 because its a fun challenge, its not going to take much to make this possible one of the upper level courses in dfw, i amost want to say it felt like a more complex yet less contained cedar hills course

MUCH IMPROVED 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Jun 27, 2012 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

wow.. what can i say. the type of course that makes you a better player. tight lines. punishes left handed and right handed players equally.

Cons:

not enough people show up to play one of the most challenging courses in the metroplex. need signs to show where the next hole is for people who don't plkay the course much. random folks popping out in the course from nowhere can be a bit disconcerting.

Other Thoughts:

the guys who cleaned up the course did an awesome job.

Diamond in the rough? 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:Jul 3, 2012 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

- Hole Design
- Technical (Rare in this area)
- Shot Selection (Whole bag needed)
- Tee Pads (Concrete is always good)
- Baskets (Innova DISCatcher Pro)
- Improves Your Game

Cons:

- People (Getting better the more people play it)
- Way-finding (Long distances between holes)
- Mosquitoes (Due to standing water)

Other Thoughts:

This is something special. If you're from around here, then you often hear people talk about how great Cedar Hill is... well this course is right up there with those courses.

This is a championship caliber course.

I'm so stoked that this course got the overhaul it needed! Thanks guys!

Descent, tough course 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Feb 18, 2012 Played the course:once

Pros:

Tough. Lots of different shots. You need a big arm AND touch on some of these holes. I think it's a good use of the crap land that's over there. You get right into the woods on the first hole and it's not too bad back there. Course has a lot of potential

Cons:

Not well taken care of. Long grass in the fairways, but not unmanageable. It does smell. There are horse hoof tracks, so it must be patrolled often for god knows what.

Other Thoughts:

I think this course gets a bad rap. It could be better taken care of, and there are a couple of huge river views that are filthy, that I think would be an awesome addition to the area if it were just cleaned up. It is hard. If your there on sunday, a taco truck shows up for the soccer games. Do yourself a favor and grab you a burrito. They're awesome

Challanging 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Jan 15, 2012 Played the course:once

Pros:

-Nice tee pads (about half are put in backwards)
-Very nice disc catchers
-holes marked with distance and par
-Very scenic
-Trash cans at almost every hole
-nice size parking lot at the start of 1 and the end of 18

Cons:

-Difficult course to play
-Lots of thorns and fallen trees
-needs to be cleaned out
-Smelled pretty bad
-Course was not signed very well, at least on the aspect of where the next tee was, got lost on multiple occasions
-lots of paths that just lead to nowhere in particular

Other Thoughts:

Ran into a lot of strange people in this park. Saw a guy playing his saxophone and also what looked like a homeless man sitting under a basket. Would recommend bringing a map, some long pants and tough shoes. The underbrush is pretty brutal and there are a lot of fallen trees. I would not recommend going to this course after it has rained b/c it sits on a flood plain. This course will test every shot that you have so get ready to use everything. Not beginner friendly but will make you a better player. Kinda wish that i got to throw over the trinity river, b/c that would have been pretty cool

This course is FUN! 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Nov 5, 2011 Played the course:once

Pros:

Nice DisCatchers, concrete tees and lots of fun factor. This course has a little bit of everything and only favors the player that can throw with accuracy. You will have to use every shot you have playing a single round on this course. Lots of risk/reward throughout. You will be humbled, but so will your opponents. If you and your friends are evenly matched, this course will separate you on the score sheet. Did I mention that it's fun to play?

Cons:

This place needs some signs. Navigation is tough. The front nine has been played a lot more, so it's a lot better than the back. There isn't very much in the way of elevation changes. This course needs to be played often by a lot of people. The back nine needs to be beat in to speed up play. We spent a little too much time looking for discs. I'd think that this isn't the course to play after a rain.

Other Thoughts:

The whole course is playable right now (November). Go play this course this winter and beat it in. The wind isn't a factor on most of the holes giving cover in the winter. If this course wasn't 45 miles from my house, I'd play it all the time.

Very UNDERrated! 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Oct 7, 2011 Played the course:once

Pros:

Very cool course with tons of upside and potential. Nice discatchers which always rank high with me. Concrete tees even though they are installed backwards. You will need every shot in your bag to score well here and a little luck here and there wont hurt either. There are some open holes to test your arm and allow you to bomb shots and then there are alot of tight shots that test your accuracy. There are also alot of short shots that allow you to get your bird with a well placed shot but can turn into a bogey if not worse for a shot that doesnt make it. The fairways are pretty righty/lefty friendly as there is a good mix of holes for both players. Nobody out there at all, so you have the place to yourself and it allows you to throw multiple shots if you like. I love the technical aspect of this course because you cant get away with a bad shot. You get what you deserve and it makes you work for that bird and even that par for the most of the course.

Cons:

Navigation is a nightmare if you dont have a map and even then its difficult at times. Very overgrown in places making it hard to find shots and baskets at times. Even some of the fairways are overgrown not making for much fun. As stated before the layout isnt that great, there are many long walks between holes. Lots of trash all over the place, dont know if trashcans would help but maybe it would be a start. The underbrush is horrible. Watch out behind hole 13 for the river, any shot that stays straight and has any power on it will be in the Trinity. Not for the faint of heart.

Other Thoughts:

This course is awesome! If there were some upkeep here this course would rank higher then it already does in my book. A little TLC and this course would be the talk of the town. If you like short courses or those where you can shoot 54, this isnt the place for you either. Watch all shots because even if you think you know where it is, the underbrush will get it. This is a killer course and I will be back for sure even though there are alot of downsides.

Pros:

-very difficult will improve your game
-long holes to work on your distance
-not begginer friendly
-hardest course ive played so far its alot of fun
-tight lines to work on accuracy
-plenty of shade through most of the course so hot days are not too bad
-baskets are in good shape
-challenges you to use lots of different shots
-there is multiple lines to choose from but they are very difficult to hit

Cons:

-so thick and un kept up with
-not begginer friendly
-very easy to get frustrated playing here
-if you get off the fairway it can easily cost you multiple strokes or a lost disc
-sometimes a good looking shot can take you some time to find the disc
-lots of briars and thorns to get caught up in or scratched from
-gay people get together near the course and you have to play a couple holes with them at your back

Other Thoughts:

overall a great course. without the gays and briars i would rate it higher. plus when it rains and we are not in a drought the course gets overgrown. at the moment its a great place to play. will sharpen your game for sure.

Horrible 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Sep 15, 2011 Played the course:once

Pros:

1) Nothing

Cons:

1) Weird men patrol this park. I don't know what they are up to, but I saw the same 3-4 guys strolling around the park in their cars the entire time I threw this course. Very creepy.

2) Course is not kept up at all. No definitive fairways out of bounds, nothing.

3) It seems like you get out of woods just to go back into the woods repeatedly

4) Did I mention the creepiness of weird guys strolling this course!!! VERY CREEPY!!!!

Other Thoughts:

Course has potential to be a fun course to throw. But until I hear that the strolling people have been cleared out, I'll never return to this course. Cut down all the 4ft stumps and clear out a definitive fairway.

I've played this course once and I was in fear of my safety the entire time!!!

Not a crowded park at all.

Cons:

The distance between holes can get kind of long.

My over all opnion is I'm not sure why people don't like this course other than they cant shoot under at it. Its a course that will develop if more people would play it. Lines would open up and such.

horrid course 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Aug 20, 2010 Played the course:once

Pros:

Incredibly challenging for those who have absolute control of the disc.

Cons:

There are no trails between the tee and the basket on most shots. Even if you throw a good shot, expect to search for your disc. even if you make it to the basket on your first throw you will trek through knee to waist high brush and thorn bushes to get to it.

Other Thoughts:

Maybe if enough people played the course to get the brush down it would be playable-nice baskets/tees simply unkept for what looks like years. bring a map for sure.

Pros:

Very Technical.....The Front nine is looking good....the back still has some problems.

Cons:

Swampy, Smelly, Trash everywhere. Watch out for creepy men around the circle drive. I grew up in the area and we used to call it Gayway. I'll just leave it at that. Very thorny and brushy. No fairways. The grass is very tall. Hard to find your disc even with a well placed shot. I brought home a tick on my leg so if you play here make sure you check when you get home.

Other Thoughts:

I Shot a 74 which was the best in my group. Missed my eagle putt on 12 and birdied. A few ace runs along the river but very risky shots.

Other Thoughts:

Reviewed: Played on:Dec 10, 2009 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

-Concrete pads
-Easy to find
-No course population...my boy McLeod said it, "Everyone is scared to play here."
-Difficulty Level is probably the highest of any course in the area.....THIS MAKES YOUR GAME BETTER.
-No trash really.
-Surrounding park area is nice as well
-This courses par 5's are TRULY par 5's

Cons:

-A bad shot = bogey or higher...I've tapped out on some holes
-Not too much shot variety here...long winding fairway -- narrow -- with tons of trees.
-Don't play when it has rained, because it pretty much sits on a swamp.
-Have a map, you'll get lost
-Thick briar patches, thorns, lots of ivy...wear pants, even in the summer. I've got battle scars from this course.

Other Thoughts:

This course has it's share of cons for sure, but I think that most of them all relate to the fact that this course is really difficult. Everything that can go wrong in a game can and will happen out there... x10. I haven't shot good out there yet.

Toughest course in the area by far, which is probably why I rank it so high.

Play it for sure, it's a good one, but don't underestimate it... it'll eat ya up.

Pros:

Championship level course.
Tee Pads on every hole.
Several 2 drive holes. (par 5 holes)
two holes looking over the Trinity River.
A lot of work has been put into this course to make it playable.

Cons:

Not well laid out, If I didn't print out he map, I would have been lost.
Tee Pads are backwards and too short.
Fairways are a little tight and the rough is REALLY rough, I had jeans on and still got scratched up.

Other Thoughts:

wow, was this course really in Texas??? I have played all over the state and this may be the most wooded course I have played. The course is NOT for beginners, it is tough. If you can't throw it straight, you will be in the rough and it IS rough.

I did manage a score in the lower 60's, I was very pleased with a few of my holes, I got 3's on #7 and #18 and managed a 5 on #5 even though my first shot didn't even make it to the mando (I had to throw a shot back to the fairway and around the mando. Stupid tree)

I had a great shot on #17 for a 2. I 3'd most of the other holes with a few 4's thrown in due to trees and rough.

I WILL BE BACK.

Oh, special note, beware of guys trolling the parking lot and in the bushes around holes #12-13. I found out the hard way........
