Jekyll and Hyde 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:Mar 17, 2018 Played the course:once

Pros:

This is a well designed, well maintained course, but I honestly think it is a bit overrated so far.

The front nine is very open, though there has been a lot of tree planting that will add some challenge as time goes on. But frankly the holes are over relatively flat, open ground with one or two trees in play. By Hole 9 I was beginning to wonder about the "Moderately Hilly and Moderately Wooded" designation.

The back nine is entirely different. The holes are quite short, with nothing over 270' even from the long tees. But there are plenty of trees and some good elevation. Every hole is a birdie opportunity but you've got to hit lines and shape drives to make that happen. If you miss saving par is pretty easy.

Infrastructure is top notch, with excellent rectangular concrete blue tees and circular concrete reds. Very nice Houck signs tell you everything you need to know and new Mach X baskets catch great. Tons of next tee signs make it 100% impossible to get lost.

Cons:

The front nine is pretty meh. Shortish holes over open ground with few obstacles and little elevation. There are dozens of new tress planted that will add some challenge, but even then this will be so-so.

The back nine is much more interesting, but is in a remarkably small area. At one point I was within 200' of six different baskets. The morning I played there was one other group on the back nine with me and we absolutely had to coordinate our play to stay safe. There is not room for multiple groups to be throwing in here at the same time.

Other Thoughts:

The short tees are really short, with holes averaging just 210'. This would be perfect for beginners and families, or a putter round.

Ample parking and it looks like a new restroom is being constructed, but was not open when I played.

Best in SA 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Nov 5, 2017 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

This course is one of the best maintained courses I have ever played. Mowed fairways and greens with a trash can on every hole. I have honestly played "pay to play" courses that were not as well maintained as this. Has a portajohn at the entrance to the park.

The course has a lot of variety for its size. Front nine is generally flat and open with three 570+ holes, two 300 footers and the rest playing between 200-240. Has a short and long box on each hole for any level of experience.

Back nine is tighter and more wooded while playing along the San Antonio River. Offers great shade and beautiful scenery. The back nine has interesting elevation changes and a good mix of right and left turning holes, also a few good ace runs.

Cons:

Front nine doesn't have much shade so bring a hat if you're going in the summer. Bugs can get bad as you go down towards the back nine and the river so bring spray. Course doesn't handle heavy rain or severe winds well.

The course is 25 minutes from downtown but I think it's worth it. I don't really consider it a con with low traffic there and low foot traffic on the course once you arrive but figured the drive was worth noting somewhere.

Other Thoughts:

Park also includes picnic benches, places to grill and a launch for kayaks. A convenience store is less than a mile out if you forget something or need to fill up/rehydrate/dehydrate etc. With the short and long boxes it makes a great course for beginners and more experienced players alike. If I could only play one course in SA this would honestly be it.

Great Course - Well Maintained 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:May 13, 2017 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

Consistent signage, both short and long tees on EVERY hole, good mix lefty and rightly holes, 3 nice par 4's, perfectly maintained, nice elevation change, constantly improving the park (adding new features every year), trash can on EVERY hole. There's nothing not to like about this course. It's "park golf" at its finest which is nice change of pace from briar golf that is most of San Antonio course.

Cons:

Don't say the drive, that's all relative. That's really the only complain I her from the "regular" San Antonio players is that it's too far to drive. Guess what? Not everybody lives on the NE side of the metro area. There's nothing not to like about this course.

Other Thoughts:

IMO, this course is better than UC and on par with McClain & Live Oak (maybe better, just depends on what you like).

If you are traveling through I'd definitely play this course.

Graytown Park 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Mar 26, 2017 Played the course:once

Pros:

All I can say is wow what a great course. The front nine is wide open with a few trees to throw you off a little but man was it bombs away. First time playing this course and being a novice was very comfortable in making confident shots. Some holes were super long which is great for those who can really reach the 300 + range. The back nine however, presented the challenge. Uphill shots, down hill shots, curves, narrow throwing lanes were all there for you on the back nine with a nice view of the San Antonio river.

Cons:

No real cons as far as playability, just found some of the terrain to be very steep and hard to navigate. could use some type of a step system to go up and down or something like a crossing bridge.

Other Thoughts:

Very well maintained grounds for a park that is out in the boonies per say. A little bit of a drive but well worth it. This is a great place to relax and just play without the worry of the next group running up to you and making you hurry. Not a lot of foot traffic like U.C. which was very enjoyable. We had 5 in our group and only saw one other group playing. This has to be one that's on your bucket list.....

Fun and not boring 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Aug 24, 2016 Played the course:2-4 times

Pros:

New tee pads, benches and young trees. More descriptions will appear when the course is near. Just go and see it.

Cons:

far from the city. Make the drive and arrive alive. You'll like it a lot. Bring water

Other Thoughts:

I love the back 9 and like the front. Don't be shy to give it a try. It was designed by the master: John Houck.
