Hackett

Reviewed: Played on:Oct 26, 2023 Played the course:2-4 times

Pros:

18 holes (plus one additional hole, 14B, as an alternate) with yellow DIScatcher baskets in fair condition. Tee pads are paver blocks and are also in good condition. Course plays with a good mix of open holes as well as wooded holes with quite a good amount of elevation, and a few par fours are mixed in as well. Tee signs have been redone and are excellent. Grass was short and well maintained. Bathrooms by hole one, and (in season) the water fountain by the fields between 9-10 is available. Course does loop close enough to where you can access the car after hole 9 if you so need (but see cons). Unique elevated basket on hole 11.

Cons:

1 is often unplayable, as many people park there for shade or to visit the memorial just beyond the basket. Hole 4's basket can be confused with 9's basket, and the basket for 14B can appear to be the actual basket for 14 (it's the one on the bottom of the hill, to the right). Lastly, there are long walks from 9-10, and from 18 back to the car. Off the fairway is very unforgiving, so take caution.

Other Thoughts:

I remember a lot about the old layout and this layout, and this layout is a lot of fun. You have your shorter, more aceable holes; then you have your longer, testy par fours, and you have a lot of elevation in both directions. It's worth your time if you're visiting the Lehigh Valley.

My first dgc 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Sep 20, 2015 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

I have not been here for a while, and when I was going here, they were always improving and adding on. It is located in a very family friendly place. I would say it is a beginner to intermediate course. The only way to lose a disk is to have some tree hate hide it or to have it or buried in the forest.

Cons:

Some of the holes went along side of the road and the tee was the worn patch if dirt in some spots. The flow and signage at some sessions left much to be desired.

Other Thoughts:

It is an ever evolving course that I would be excited to go back to and see the new flow and challenges every year. The people who maintain it care so much for it and make every year a somewhat different course. It is a beginner to intermediate level course. I might be bias since this is where my friend taught me, but it makes me want to go back even more.

Hackett Park October 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Oct 22, 2019 Played the course:once

Pros:

Very good t-pads and some signage.
Diverse engaging course with mix of open, wooded/rocky technical, up and downhill.
Course in ideal shape.
No people visiting the park taking up space on fairways.
Free.

Cons:

Could use better signage, but course is on a public park and likely things get destroyed....
Potential for non-DG's inhabiting the fairways.
Bring Udisc.

Other Thoughts:

Other reviewers have had issues with people on the fairways etc... However we experienced none of this. We played on a Sunday in mid October on an overcast/drizzly weather day. We played the course 2x and had saw only a few dog walkers and one other group of DG's. Apparently there is a tournament coming up next week so the course is in very good shape. Grass was cut. Some fantastic and challenging holes on the back nine that will require skill and shot selection. I would recommend this course if in the area. Not quite at the level of Jordan Creek, but a very fun course.

Just alright 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Jun 9, 2019 Played the course:2-4 times

Pros:

-good mix of open and wooded holes
-nice variation of shots
-holes 4 and 14 allow you to bring out your biggest drivers yet still require good placement
-typically not too crowded
-fairways are (mostly) well kept
-11 has a really cool elevated basket
-next tee signs are mostly accurate

Cons:

-rough is VERY tall in the summer. You'll spend at least 5 mins, if not more, looking for discs that strayed off the fairway.
-speaking of the rough, be wary of snakes, groundhog holes, thorns, and clingers while looking for discs. I came out of the round with many cuts on my ankles and clingers stuck to my socks and shoes
-wooded holes are rocky and tricky to navigate. Watch your footing!
-the park includes a baseball field and picnic pavilion which get busy on the weekends. People will park right on holes 1 and 2 making them difficult to play. We skipped these to avoid hitting cars.
-very hilly! 4-9 brings you down and back up an 80ft elevation change, and then up some more to get to the back 9
-the walk from 9 to 10 is very long
-not very beginner friendly
-baskets without next tee signs make it tough to navigate if you havent played there before

Other Thoughts:

This was the first course I had ever played and back then I had no problem with it. But as I play more and more and on different courses, Hackett's Park struck a bad chord with me once I returned to play it again. We went on a beautiful Sunday afternoon but the park was insanely crowded because a baseball game had just finished and people were barbecuing at the pavilion. I didn't remember just how overgrown the course is, or how rocky it was up the middle of wooded holes. Even though I threw my first ever 400ft+ drive on 14, I can't give this course a good review due mostly to the cons above. It's an interesting course to play, and as long as you go in prepared you should have an okay time

Under rated gem 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Nov 24, 2018 Played the course:once

Pros:

I don't understand why this course is rated as low as it is. The fun factor and overall design is fantastic. I'm from Indiana and don't have this type of elevation to play with everyday but so much fun throwing long bombs down some very scenic hills! Love the variation in Par 3's and 4's. Me and my playing partner had little to no difficulties with navigation using the UDisc app map. Most holes had very fair, well defined fairways and tees were in overall good shape. Good mix of open and more technical holes through the woods. Disc catcher Baskets have a bit of rust on the chains, but caught discs fine.

Cons:

You can pretty much ignore the signage because it's all wrong. Rely on the info in UDisc.

Hole 10 has so much potential but as it is now, it's a throw and hope hole. More tree clearing needs to be done to make the drive fair.

Footing can be a little dicey on some of the wooded holes so be careful.

Other Thoughts:

I actually enjoyed this course more than nearby South Mountain and it's really worth a visit IMO. Was able to enjoy with my brother in law while our wives and kids were enjoying nearby Crayola Experience.

Be sure to stop at the Oh Wow Cow ice cream shop nearby after your round.

Good park course with some woods 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:Apr 21, 2018 Played the course:once

Pros:

- Very good variety of holes: open for bombers, carefully-placed pins challenging your upshots, and some technical holes (10 and 11: I'm looking at you...)
- Wind and elevation changes are part of the deal here - they add extra challenge to some simple-looking holes
- Great use of a park location: at various times, you'll come across family picnics, walkers, ball games

Cons:

- Others here have written well about signage problems and the difficulty navigating the course. I'm hopeful this is being worked on, because that's the only really glaring issue (and it's fixable!).

Other Thoughts:

- Disc golf in public parks can be a great experience when the layout doesn't cause players and park-goers to "intrude" on one another's spaces. That's part of Hackett's charm: you feel like you're part of a community while playing your game.

Hopeful For Hackett 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:Jul 1, 2018 Played the course:once

Pros:

+ The course appears well-maintained. The fairways are easy to tell from the rough. I saw only one or two scraps of paper or discarded plastic bottles on the ground in the whole course.
+ Hackett Park has a large sprawling course. A player will get a good hike from playing here.
+ Some nice gradual elevation challenges. There are none that are particularly daunting.
+ A pretty good balance of wooded and open holes.
+ The tee pads are made of sturdy concrete tiles.

Cons:

- All of the existing tee signs need desperately to be replaced. They are misnumbered, show wildly incorrect distances and do not even contain a diagram of the hole ahead to give the player a clear idea of where to throw. A few were missing altogether.
- Sometimes, a player can see multiple pins from one tee. Hole four jumps to mind as the biggest offender because there are three targets visible from the fairway. Because most of the tee signs have no map, I was throwing towards pin five without knowing it!
- There are also very bad 'next tee' signs at this course. Some have none at all. Others have easily missed dull orange diamonds with an arrow on them. This disrupts the flow of the course.
- There was no information board/course diagram or lost disc box anywhere that I could see.

Other Thoughts:

My favorite hole of this course was definitely 11. The hole itself was a standard wooded tunnel shot. The pin is so high off the ground that a wooden ladder has been provided to retrieve discs, which I thought was a nice touch. Plus, the player passes by a curious crumbling structure along the way. I couldn't resist peeking inside and wondering what it was used for at some time in the distant past. Moments like those make me glad that I play disc golf.
My least favorite hole here is easily 10. The trees seemed too close together to throw a decent line, the rocks underfoot felt like a nuisance to avoid, and it took me at least fifteen minutes to find the bleeping tee pad, which brings me to the meat and potatoes of this review...

Signage is important to the disc golfer. It's one thing if someone is a regular to Hackett Park and is already familiar with it from start to finish. However, for a player like me who had never been here before, signage is vital to the enjoyment of a course because it keeps the action flowing.
On three separate occasions I got lost. The first time between 3 and 4, it felt more natural for me to walk around the bush and down the path. Little did I know that I had to walk towards the baseball field for tee 4. The third time was between 14 and 15 because a footpath between the two was nearly hidden by overgrowth.
The second time was between 9 and 10, and this is why signage is so important. After hole 9 finished, there was no indication of where to go next. I almost tricked myself into believing that this was just a 9-hole course! I wandered around in irritation for fifteen minutes as I found the pins for 18, 14, 13 and even 10 before I finally found 10's tee pad.
It turned out that after 9 I had to walk up towards the road, keeping the baseball stadium over my left shoulder and up the slope into a narrow path with a dull brown sign? Signage. Fix it.

Beyond that, I have to say that the actual disc golf part of the course is fun. There are some nice wide open fields to let loose at full power. Hackett also features some nice constricted tunnels to be precise and disciplined. Whatever kind of a disc golfer you are, this course it bound to scratch your itch. Add to that some enjoyable uphill and downhill throws, both open and wooded, and you've got the potential for a very good disc golf course here.

Potential for something even greater 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:May 10, 2017 Played the course:2-4 times

Pros:

Variety: A great mix of elevation, wide open shots, and tight wooded holes
Park quality: this park is gorgeous.
Parking is ample assuming there are no events planned

Cons:

Very, very thick rough.
Inaccurate/poor signage (all the distances are marked in yards for some reason in addition to not being thorough, some holes have a laminated map in the tee signs but I strongly recommend using the aerial map on dcgr)
Baskets are in need of maintenance: chains are super stiff and rusty.

Other Thoughts:

I played Hackett's on a whim with a buddy of mine on a busy day (an important baseball game was going on) as well as when it was quiet and I can vouch for its consistency. I think the course has an excellent layout (once you figure out how to get around that is) and provides excellent variety of holes. The lawncare side of maintenance is good, no fairways were unkempt and the wooded holes were very clean but the brush is naturally thick so try to keep those shots on the fairway. The cleanliness of this park blew me away as I couldn't find a piece of trash anywhere. In my opinion this course is on par (haha) with some of the better rated ones in the area but it needs a little loving to get to a 4 disc rating. Namely the Baskets need a little love as they are on the rusty side and don't catch quite as well as DisCatchers normally do, course signage needs to be overhauled completely, and possibly add some markers on the baskets to point players in the right direction as the first time play through will result in you wandering aimlessly a bit.

Update: I played the course a few more times recently and noticed some of the hole changes and I have to say I'm quite impressed. The signage is still rough but the layout revisions are excellent.

Better than expected! 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:Mar 5, 2017 Played the course:once

Pros:

Great park setting. Good use of elevation! Wooded and open holes. Good mix. Not too hard but not a pitch and putt course. I am an 870 rated older player. I shot a +7 1st time playing here. I enjoyed it alot, I will be back for sure. New tees on most of the holes. Tees on every hole.
The hardest hole on the course is a par 4 hole 10 wooded. Most enjoyable holes were 4, 7, 11, 14, 17 big arms can have some fun here.

Cons:

Gotta update the signage. That is the only glaring shortcoming. I am sure they are working on it due to all the new Tee pads, signage must be in the works. Rough is rough. So you know what they say....... don't throw it there !! Long walk from 9 to 10 and back up the hill after 18. Not terrible but thought I'd mention it. This course is pretty spread out, plenty of walking. Great for some, not great for others. I happen to like the extra walking.

Other Thoughts:

this place is likely spectacular in the spring time. Lots of manicured lawns that the parks guys keep up with. Once the signage is up this place gets 4 to 4.5 stars.

Hackett 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Jan 22, 2017 Played the course:once

Pros:

Pro's:

- Elevation change
- Good mix of wooded and open holes

Cons:

- Rusted chains on baskets
- Poor signage
- Tee pads are fine on some holes and poor on others
- Long walk from hole 9 to 10
- Bad rough

Other Thoughts:

Got to play the course with a local who knew the layout, without him I don't think we would've ever found hole 10 after playing 9. You have to continue up the hill, around the baseball field, cross the street and go up a small path on the hill to get to 10's tee box.

Also good to have a local on some of the holes where you could see multiple baskets from the tee pad. From 4's tee box you can see 3 baskets. With no tee sign you would have no idea which one to play to.

The wooded holes where fun, the open hole felt like you're just throwing in an open field with no punishment for having a bad throw.

I'm glad we played in the winter, the rough in area's is really bad, I now understand the amount of lost discs posted on the clubs FB page in the spring and summer.

Overall a fine course. Feels like a longer slightly harder Upper Mac course.

A course that has made major changes 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:May 26, 2016 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

- Front 9's layout change has made better use of the space available at the park and now every hole is unique and challenging.
- long and short holes with mixed woods and vast greens.
- good use of elevation

Cons:

- signage/basket numbers are not all accurate.
- 15-17 can be overgrown in the summer with tall grass.

Other Thoughts:

Overall a great course that could use minor fixes to really perfect it. I personally love playing only the front 9 as it begins and ends at same place and the variety of those holes compared to the back 9 really stand out to me as an amazing greater lehigh valley disc golf course.

Interesting with potential 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Apr 5, 2016 Played the course:once

Pros:

Great layout concept.

Cons:

Tee pads are obviously being constructed, some holes have new concrete tees, some have none. The signs that are there are misnumbered, it's obvious someone is tending to the course to make it better but according to the course map downloadable here on dgcr, hole 1 is marked as #11 on a sign. 2 is #12 and so forth.

Other Thoughts:

I really enjoyed what this course is shaping up to be. Definitely needs signs, I got lost multiple times and had to ask others on the course. As it is heavily wooded in parts you aren't always certain which direction you need to go.

That said, I plan on going and playing this course again today as I now know where all the tees and pins are.
