Easy to Fix 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:Apr 12, 2021 Played the course:once

Pros:

This is a super simple, but not always super easy course that can be played quickly by any skill level. The next tee is always easy to find, and the park does a good job providing the basics for a Disc Golf course and not much else.

Different holes favor different lines. Holes 2-4 favor right-turning shots, while 7 and 8 probably favor left-turning. A few holes have some tricky lines, namely 1 and 5. Several holes give you upshots that you would see on a longer course, meaning this course can improve your skills without being a fantastic course in and of itself. If you want to add some challenge, you can force yourself to take a different throw than you normally would, which works on this course, because nearly every hole provides that other option but might make it a little harder than your first choice.

This is probably a good beginner course, with little lost disc opportunity and no holes that are really long. But there is some interesting challenge on 2 and 5, with some decent trees that can get in the way but still options to get to the basket. There's also some slight variance in hole distance, with 6 being the shortest and easiest and 2 being the longest (and it's slightly uphill).

Cons:

Dangerous. Like, I don't know how anyone thought this alignment was actually a good idea. To start, 7 and 9 share a basket. A bunch of holes are really close to each other, but it's not always too bad. And, holes 1 and 9 have routes that take you directly over a sidewalk.

While some holes favor certain shot shapes, you can nearly always throw directly at the basket and be fine.

There's some construction beside hole 6, but there's a fence separating it from the park. It's possible the construction could start eating into the course.

Not much elevation change. There are some gentle slopes on 1-3 and possibly 7, but it's not enough to make a big difference. If there was something of note on 6 and 8, or steeper slopes on the others, they would be much better while still being accessible for beginners.

Hole 1 makes no sense at all. You're either throwing over a sidewalk, throwing wide right, or smacking a tree. It's possible the trees used to be much shorter, but it's just another reason this hole needs to go (see below).

Other Thoughts:

So here's the fix: Remove holes 1 and 9 entirely, and have the course start on what's currently hole 3, play 3-8 like normal, and finish on 2. This would remove conflict with the sidewalk, dual-purpose basket, and two pairs of holes that are close to one another. Finally, the course would actually end where it begins. Sure, it'd only be 7 holes, but it would be a massive improvement over what we currently have.

Ignore the posted pars.

While this course has its merits and could be a decent course to play over lunch or in the early morning, the dangerous aspects and the lack of challenge and variety make it difficult to enjoy very much. If there are more than two groups on the course at a time, good luck.

It's Fun To Play At The Y. M. C. A.

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:Oct 18, 2022 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

The eight bright blue DisCatchers stand out well for this quick round. Nine concrete tees with a tee sign bolted into the back of each pad.

Good variance of length for an easy course, ranging from 160' to 320'. It's a great spot to do some mid-range/putter only rounds to sharpen that skill.

Very easy to navigate, as next tee is very close to the previous basket. Too close in some cases.

The more wooded holes use the obstacles well. 5's pin is tucked 50ft behind a wall of tall bushes, 6's pin has both sides guarded so only a line drive can ace it (I've seen it), and 8 has a large tree trunk forcing a hard rhbh hyzer or big rhfh flex.

The left-to-right slope on the green of 4 is something to watch out for, as are the pebbles on the green of 1 and 2 making upshots more difficult on those.

Cons:

Very small disc golf parking lot, however, you can park in the YMCA lot, or west of the water tower... but it's fun to park at the YMCA.

The baskets of 1 and 2 are leaning badly.

This course has a lot of dangerously close play. Holes 1-3 are smashed against each other so tightly that a good drive on hole 1 could end up on the fairway of hole 2. My RHFH drive on 3 buzzes over the fairway of 2. Hole 4's tee is way too close to the basket on 3. It's inside the circle on a 225' hole. Holes 5/8/9 have the same problem as 1-3, albeit with a few more trees in the way. This issue is compounded by the fact that this is a fairly popular 9-hole.

Holes 7 and 9 share a basket. With both holes being sub-250 smashing past the basket into a group coming up from the other side is a possibility.

The YMCA next door may leave a few picnickers in the fairways, and a bad skip on hole 3 could end up within their fence. A miss right on hole 5 could end up in the fire station parking lot. Luckily the firefighters know about the course and are super chill (yes, I've thrown in there before).

Other Thoughts:

The lines and angles on holes 1 and 2 are tight, and as the longest holes on the course, these sit above the difficulty level of the rest of the round. Not necessarily a bad thing, but the difficulty spike is something to be aware of.

This is a fine place to learn different shapes out of your discs with a few one-disc rounds, or a spot to bring someone wanting a little more challenge in their 9-hole. Either way, keep your eyes out for other player's throws and positions.
