Linville Falls Short 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:Feb 4, 2021 Played the course:2-4 times

Pros:

Linville Hills is a short, beginner friendly course. It's one of the better beginner friendly courses, so there's that.
- Beginner & kid friendly layout. The nine holes average a whopping 135 feet. I thought I might use multiple discs so I carried my bag. At least I burned extra calories carrying the unneeded weight.
- Nice layout. For as good as a short layout can have variety, this has it. You have baskets behind trees (#2, 6, & 9), elevation factors (#3 & 7), and raised baskets (#4 & 8). The one hole not mentioned - #1 - is still probably one of the two or three best on the course.
- Easy navigation. You see baskets from the road. You pull into the park and the first tee sign is clearly visible on the right side. From there, it's a big loop around the entire park premise.
- Course is mostly isolated from the rest of the park activities. I noticed a walking trail, a small play ground, and picnic tables. Point being, not a lot of reasons for other people to be interfering with your round.
- Potential. Holes have ample space between one another that a second set of longer tees could be installed at some point. Most holes could easily be lengthened 75 feet or more. On #9, you could easily push a second tee back 150 feet and have a tee in the 225 foot range instead of 81. That would add a layer of challenge to player who may need an intermediate step between this layout and Pipeline.
- Proximity. You're 10 minutes from Pipeline. In that sense alone, this course can be used a warm up course more than the two practice baskets at Pipeline. After all, you're tee shot on #1 at Pipeline can be tricky. So this can be a good place to loosen up your arm.
- Ace runs galore. The course is part of Innova's Ace Race initiative. As such, be aggressive and make runs at the baskets.

Cons:

- Short & easy. For anyone intermediate and above, this course isn't aimed at you. Every hole is birdie or ace-able. For better players, anything more than a 2 on a scorecard feels like a lost stroke. Getting three par 3s, two from smacking trees and having unfortunate bounces, was disheartening.
- Short tee pads. I'd think if you need more than a two step run up on a 150 foot layout maybe you're doing it wrong.
- Lack of amenities. There is a porta-jon in the parking lot if that's any clue. You're only 5 minutes from gas stations and fast food joints, and a Fuddruckers (shout out to my first employer when I was 16), so shouldn't be a big issue.
- I think a couple hole distances may be off. #3 and 4 are listed as having a difference of 55 feet (169 vs 114). I felt I threw the exact same shot with the same amount of force and ended up with gimmie birdies on both.
- Inflated ratings on UDisc? It had a 4.2 rating as of this review, which is the same as Shoally Parks and just behind Pipeline and Holston Creek. Yeah….this course isn't in the same stratosphere as those high-level layouts.

Other Thoughts:

Linville Hills is a nice neighborhood, welcome-to-the-sport layout. In that regard, the course hits its intended target.
- Good for practice. If you're here and have the course to yourself, take advantage of different baskets, angles, and distances for practice purposes. You never know when you'll need to throw around a deactivated tower in a real round.
- Try different discs. These short courses seem to be the layouts where I'll dust off a little-to-never used disc for a try out. I've found many a mid-range disc to be useful by deciding to hack my way around a short course with a new mold. What's the worse that's going to happen? You get a lot of 3s instead of 2s? That's why we practice.
- I did enjoy most of the layouts in their scaled down form. Double the length of each hole and now you've got holes topping out around 350 feet. Give a layout at that length and this would be an excellent 9-hole layout. That's why I think long tees would be a huge upgrade.
- With a lack of other obstacles, the smattering of trees are used as obstacles. The most interesting of these layouts is on #8, where you can throw around on both sides, or shoot the gap.
- You can play this course quickly. Two rounds should only take 30 - 40 minutes.
- Holes #3 - 5 are my favorite stretch. Two downhill layouts, one to a raised basket, and one relatively straight layout with trees and the tower as your backdrop. Throw in some art work on the walking trail, the seclusion from the rest of the park and the road, and this is the quietest, most peaceful stretch.
- This course is excellent for what it is. It meets all of its goal. For that, it's a well-designed course. Compared to ALL courses, this is a small fish in a big pond. So, master the bunny slopes here before heading to the black diamond that is Pipeline.

Love this course! 2+ years drive by

Pros:

Perfect course for working on your putt and approach game, or even dialing back power on your drives.

Course has really good flow.

Cons:

Lacking course signs on such a short course, you do end up confused which basket is the target on your first go around, but the issues resolves by round 2.
