Pros:
This is a beautiful multi-use park, with hundreds of coastal live oak trees.
The nine holes are relatively short, ranging from 185' to 453', but with only three holes over 250'. Most play through tight groups of trees with a low, overhanging canopy that adds a lot of challenge. Any drive that lifts even a little will get knocked down. There is decent variety here, with holes calling for straight drives as well as left and right-finishing drives.
Some of the holes are so tightly wooded between the tee and the basket that a wide, sweeping shot around the "outside" is the cleanest route. Having both a forehand and a backhand will give you more flexibility both on the drives and the inevitable scrambles.
The ground is very sandy so skips are minimal. Most often, shots stop very near where they first hit the ground.
Familiar DISCatcher baskets show up well in the shadows and catch great. Some of the baskets are closely guarded by trees and low-hanging branches, so be ready to do some straddle putting, or in some cases a turbo or scoober to go over a branch.
The ground below the trees is completely clear and brushless. A couple of holes have a brushline along one side that might gobble up a shanked drive, but overall, this is a forgiving course with regard to disc-finding.
Cons:
Teepads. Just kidding, there are no teepads. There is a simple 4x4 post with the hole number, but nothing else. The ground here is loose, fine, sand. It doesn't pack down at all, and each tee location is a deep, uneven hole in bare sand. It is easy enough to push it around and even it out, but there is nothing stable to push off of. This is the loosest ground that I've ever tried to throw from and it doesn't work well. Constructed tees would be a big upgrade.
There is a basic course map at the parking lot that gives hole distances, and that is it. No additional information at the tees.
There are two pair of holes (4,5 and 8,9) that parallel each other. You play the first hole, then walk back most of the hole length to the next tee which is offset laterally. Sort of odd from a course-flow standpoint.
This is a short, technical course. Folks who value long, open fairways won't find them here.
Other Thoughts:
A walking trail winds through the course and gets plenty of use. Be prepared to wait on walkers before you can play some holes.
Plenty of parking with playgrounds and other activities in the park.
This is a fun little community park course that isn't particularly challenging, but serves its purpose. With the only other nearby courses being the tough Live Oaks courses and the rather poor Port Aransas DGC, this is a welcome addition to the area.
