Tall grass in fairway 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Jul 19, 2019 Played the course:once

Pros:

Baskets are in good condition. Next tees are clearly marked all pads are paved.

Cons:

Tall grass in fairway makes walking from tee to hole unpleasant. Fairways run parallel making throws frequently fade into the side by side fairway.

Other Thoughts:

Parking situation is confusing. Not possible to walk from the lot to tee 1 at the time of visit.

Decent for the area 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Aug 24, 2018 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

*Has a decent flow to it.
*Seems to be well maintained
*concrete tee boxes
*Seems to be seldom played so you usually have the course to yourself
*Good mix of shot type...I sometimes throw forehand and backhand drives on same hole to try different lanes.
*Rounds usually go pretty quick...35 min or so...Not a lot of time spent searching for discs.
*Benches and garbage cans on a few holes...porta potty near the road as you cross the street for holes 4-10.

Cons:

*Not a very challenging course
*It has some low areas that can get pretty sloppy
*Score system could be reworked...par 4 260'?
*Advanced players might get sick of this course quickly.

Other Thoughts:

I play this course on my way home from work and really enjoy it. It's a quick and easy course with a wide variety of shots. It's not the most scenic park around but it's also not just wide open the whole way. If you live around Montrose and haven't checked it out I'd recommend it for sure.

The little DGC that could be! 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Aug 17, 2015 Played the course:once

Pros:

*Nice baskets + practice for putting
*Multiple tees (although shorts are often directly in front of longs without unique looks)
*Signs with distance and for navigation
*Benches & trash cans
*Dog friendly w/poo bags.
*Disc golf specific park within a development that was never completely built out so its pretty much a DGC in the middle of an empty neighborhood plot without homes.
*Nice mix of shots and challenge for a 12 hole course
*Well groomed/maintained park space

Cons:

*Tees are gravel and boxed in/raised up which for the longer drives can be unsafe and some shorter holes had rutting/uneven ground (seems like would be a big issue after rain)
*Fairways are not all that defined on many of the holes with some crossing over and hazardous design if course was in a busy area.
*Many gaps are too tight even for gold level disc golfers there is way too much luck involved here with a select few trees/branches removed the fairways would become much more defined. It takes away from having to hit a real shot and basically throw layyups to areas vs carve up the course.
*short tees do not provide much variation
*Feels a little crammed together in spots and gets weird around 8-10 where I wasn't exactly sure how it all flowed together. Seems like some tees are shared?
*Flat no WOW factor with quite a few straight(er) shots.

Other Thoughts:

Really good local city park course which COULD be one heck of a disc golf course. I am not sure 12 holes even are needed and 9 might actually provide a superior playing experience given some moving of 2nd tees to provide unique looks. The trees in general just feel like they need some trimming/removal. The tee signs are oddly placed but well done and concrete would be a big improvement here. There is just something about this course which felt like it was missing. Hard to really put my finger on it. If I lived in the area I would play here often but have a feeling it would get boring quick. very low replay value even though it was a solid course.

Go Montrose! 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:Sep 21, 2014 Played the course:once

Pros:

+Lots of variation here. Some holes are shorter ace runs, some holes were pretty long and required a few drives for me. Some holes were really wooded and others were closer to open. Some holes turned left, some right, some dead straight. Water/marsh came into play a few times.
+Dual tees on all of the holes. All on concrete. The difference in length and difficulty between sets of tees was large.
+Trash cans and porta potty.
+Park is disc golf only and is on the edge of town so it won't get a lot of use by non disc golfers.
+Great signage
+Probably won't lose a disc here. It is possible with a very bad drive on the last two holes but isn't likely.
+Good flow, especially considering that the course is on two sides of the road. It's pretty easy to find your way around. There are a few signs in places where it might be confusing.
+Practice basket.
+There are a few ace runs here.
+Some unique trees on the course.

Cons:

-Not a ton of elevation.
-Kind of in the middle of nowhere
-Small parking lot
-This course is missing a huge "wow" factor to push it into the 4+ rating. It is a lot of fun and was done well but just isn't quite there. I don't know if the land is good enough to have a higher rated course on it.

Other Thoughts:

+This course is very balanced and well done for what they had to work with. It requires a good mix of accuracy and power off the tee.
+This course is worth a stop as it is one of the best in the area. I will be back again if I get the chance. It had a high fun factor for me.

Windy! 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:Apr 21, 2014 Played the course:2-4 times

Pros:

Good mix of long and short holes, some 150 ft and 250 ft shots as well as 600 ft holes. Not a gimme birdie though, the short holes mixed with the 40 mph winds today made any hole an easy deuce let alone easy 4 on the long holes. Nice signs telling where the next hole is along with distance. Dual tees on most holes. Put water into play throwing over a pond and having a creek along the other hole.

Cons:

Half the course is on each side of the entry road which isn't really a con. Pretty wet today.

Other Thoughts:

I really enjoyed it, the longer and tougher holes are pretty fair, you have to throw to a landing zone to get your 3. Course is very challenging.

Ups and Downs 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Jun 17, 2013 Played the course:once

Pros:

Very difficult course.
It can challenge even the best disc golfers with a variety of shots. The trees give a very fun challenge as you try to maneuver your way to the baskets, which are many times in the middle of a patch of trees. Also the two driving pads can make the course more enjoyable for the less experienced disc golfer.

Cons:

It's only a 12 hole course which can be frustrating to not get in a full 18. The terrain is pretty poor and the course is not very upkept. Hole 12 is a huge hazard for losing discs and that should be advised.

Other Thoughts:

It's a fun course and once the other 6 holes are put in and the course is up kept, it could easily get a 4.0 rating from me.

A tight 12-holer 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:Jan 20, 2018 Played the course:2-4 times

Pros:

This is a 12 hole course. Nice new DGA baskets (and a separate practice pin). Signage on each hole and occasional arrows pointing to next tee helps aid navigation. Dual tees on 9 of 12 holes (8-10 are shared tee pads). Challenging layout with many young and medium trees that create multiple (although tight) throwing lanes. Course was just cleared out so not many opportunities for lost discs (water on 12 could be an exception). Nice mix of long/short and open/wooded holes.

Update 8/2014: More cleared out trees opened this up nicely. Grass is starting to take and make fairways less dirty. Added benches, trash cans to several holes and a port-o-potty.

1/25/18 UPDATE: Now long/short concrete tee pads! And they are larger than normal. Some trees taken out that were going to die so it cleaned it up a little bit

Cons:

At the time of this review this is a very raw/immature course. Could use concrete/asphalt tee pads. As of now the tee boxes are powdery limestone that is like teeing off in deep sand. That should change with a good tamping and more play. Course has kind of a weird flow having players cross the same road twice per round. Until the parking lot is built the first tee is hard to locate but once you find it you should be good to go. Course in in a relatively small area and some tee pads and pins are very close to throwing lanes for other holes.

Update 8/2014: Pads are nice and solid now. Little divots to be expected from limestone but not as bad as other courses with the same pads. Parking lot now built with signage from a couple miles out to direct you to the course. Watch for poison ivy near the pin on 1 and all along the #2 right fairway. One big thing that downgrades this course, in my opinion, is that some holes have you throwing right into the tee sign, bench, garbage can (chained down). Huge design flaw that should have been detected when installation was happening.

UPDATE 1/25/18: Tees are fixed (see above). Tee signs also still in the way (which is a rating downgrade) when they could have fixed the problem,. In the past the park was surrounded by undeveloped land. There are recent houses built on adjacant land. What was a rare wayward shot could now be trouble.

Other Thoughts:

Like I said before, this course is very young and I'll update this review when it gets some age and character. I helped clear brush and rocks there last weekend and spoke with some city employees and a council member and was impressed with the money and time they have already put and will be continuing to invest in this course - they want to make this a top notch course for the area! They are planning to build a nice parking lot and hydro-seeding the fairways before year's end. There are no garbage cans as of yet but I told the council member to PLEASE put as many as possible out there and he readily agreed. If you head out there temper your expectations for the time being. This is a course that players of all levels should enjoy and will only improve with time.

Update 8/2104: Course is maturing nicely with more trees cleared and grass growing. Parking lot with bulletin board. Garbage cans in place. This course will challenge all skill levels.

Update 1/25/18: Concrete short and long pads now. Lots of clearing out trees from the earlier days. Still really wet for days after a rainy spell. Upped it to a 3.5 from a 3.
