Nature Park redefines 9 hole courses

Reviewed: Played on:Sep 24, 2022 Played the course:once

Pros:

Dual tees and dual baskets on every hole. Tees are in good shape, some were a little small and the baskets are in good shape. It looks like both tees can play to either basket, so 4 ways to play every hole.
Great use of the elevation available in the park, it starts with a grassy ravine you have to cross on #1, then 2 downhillers (3 and 7), 3 uphillers (4,8 and 9), one with both (6), its laid out very well to give you all types of shots.
Nice variety of vegetation to traverse also, a few tunnels shots, scattered trees and a few open shots as well.
Four Par 4s on this 9 hole course, including the very challenging #9.
Nice restroom and parking at the start. The Nature park also contains some mountain bike terrain and trails.

Cons:

The tee signs have either not weathered well, or have been vandalized. With the Par 4s on the course, this required a walk up the fairway on a few of them. Hopefully they can be replaced with something more permanent.
The grass was a little long the day I was there, but like I have said before on several Central FL courses, they had a couple of storms come through during the year, so maintenance probably had other priorities.

Other Thoughts:

Very nice facilities as you pull into the park, although a small parking lot. The mountain biking terrain area was the first thing I noticed, constructed hills and jumps to test your mettle. A short walk past the playground and practice basket brings you to the first tee.
The course starts out casual enough with #1 and #2, but then you come to probably the signature 3rd hole. With some thick woods (and OB ?) down the right, keep it straight down the largest elevation change on the course to the Gold basket, comfortably in front of a neighborhood lake. A beautiful hole and a chance to let it fly 270'/335' on this Par 3.
#4 then goes back up the hill then it flattens out and a long way back to the Gold basket on the first Par 4.
Most of the Red baskets are off to one side of the fairway, so you shouldn't have to worry about hitting them, but on #7, the fairways start out straight, then the Red basket is down one path to the right and the Gold requires you to hit another gap and go left and further back.
As I have mentioned in other reviews, I love a tough, challenging finishing hole and #9 delivers. The tee shots are tunnels out and uphill to a widening fairway. A picket line of large trees to avoid, then across the grassy ravine and slightly uphill to the basket guarded by a couple of large, old growth trees with large branches. Two good shots are required to birdie on the Gold basket at 400'/430'.
For Intermediate players, there are two reasonable options at Nature Park, Short to Gold and Long to Red, so 18 mostly unique holes to play, and probably one of the better workouts in Central FL.
I don't believe I have given very many 4.0 ratings to 9 hole courses, but I can see why this one is rated so highly. Variety, elevation and several Par 4s.

Possibly The Best Nine Hole Course That I Have Played 2+ years

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:Oct 20, 2019 Played the course:once

Pros:

Yes, Virginia, there are hills in Central Florida. And this course is full of them. The course also features an awesome tree canopy, well-designed holes, and excellent concrete tees with adequate tee signage and next tee signs. Generally, two sets of tees and two baskets per hole make for many ways to play this course. And, this course is fun to play! The fairways were mowed tight with only a couple of pockets of denser rough. No disc losses were reported! The course is pretty scenic and has a cool chill vibe to it.

Cons:

Hard to find any flaws here. I could nitpick and say that the course could use a couple of trash cans on it. Although the signage was adequate, it seemed somewhat temporary and hopefully better signage is coming in the future.

The course is intertwined with what appeared to be some very cool well-used mountain bike trails with insane ramps and natural vertical drops. Wasn't really a con though as everyone seemed to know and stay in their respected areas. Just be aware as they might go zooming by occasionally.

Other Thoughts:

Everyone in my group loved this course. It is one of the top nine-hole courses in Florida and beyond in my opinion. It's beautiful and a blast to play!

Elevation in Florida! 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Jan 1, 2019 Played the course:2-4 times

Pros:

Nice variety of shots. Beautiful property. Well laid out and lots of elevation. I think it has the most elevation of any permanent course in FL. Each hole has 2 fantastic baskets and short and long tee pads which lets you play each hole 4 different ways.
Scenic course with some real picturesque holes. Fun for all levels. Little risk of losing any discs. Some nice par fours.

Cons:

Right now only about half the holes have concrete pads and the temp pads are on pretty steep inclines which makes footing and run up difficult.

Other Thoughts:

This is a great course for all skill levels, long to long plays tough for 1000 rated players and the short to short is good for those just starting. Great piece of land w very good design. Has bathrooms near the parking lot. Once all concrete is in, this will rate higher.

More than just 9 Holes 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:May 12, 2018 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

- Brand New! Beautiful shiny new baskets.
- Florida course with some elevation challenges. 2 uphill drives (#6 and #4. #9 has got some hill in it too) as well as 3 downhill drives (#3, #5, and #7)
- Length. Playing Long Tees to Long Baskets makes for a solid 9 holes with 4 par 4s.
- Options. 36 different holes to play. Two pads and two baskets on every hole make this course play much different than your usual nine hole course. Not up for long holes? Play short to short or long to short or even short to long! I personally really enjoy short to long.
- Not just longer tees and baskets. Many of the different tee/basket options really do work to create very different holes.
- Hole #3 - Really one of the prettiest drives I've ever played. A downhill shot with trees to contend with, but not so many that you can enjoy the view of the lake from the pad.
- The city mows the property frequently and is extending into the areas that the new course has created.
- Great line options on nearly every hole. Most holes don't restrict you to a backhand or forehand line as some courses will, but at the same time the lines are not wide open, which also makes this course great for practicing lines.
- Great signage that makes navigating the course easy-peasy.
- Shaded tee pads. As summer approaches I was happy to find nearly all of the tees are in the refuge of shade.
- Nice restrooms on site.

Cons:

- Not entirely finished. There are rubber tee pads at the time of this writing (5/14/18) but there will be concrete pads installed in a few months.
- Only 9 holes. But with the options of long and short tees/baskets its hard to feel that this is just another 9 hole course.

Other Thoughts:

- The park is on city property with a playground at the start, as well as a mountain biking trail that crosses the path to hole #7. As a local who wishes to play this course for years to come, I'd hope that everyone is courteous to those using the playground and mindful when near the bike trail.

Incomplete, but fairly sweet 2+ years

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:May 5, 2018 Played the course:2-4 times

Pros:

Nicely manicured grassy areas mixed with oak groves and great woodsy areas with a fair share of central Florida topography, which comes into play on every fairway.
Dual concrete tees (White & Blue) and Dual Baskets (Red & Yellow/Gold Innova DISCatcher 28s). So every fairway has 4 options!! This allows for 4 distinct levels of play at any given time. I think this is a very versatile option for any course with thoughtful (dual) tee and pin positions.
Playground and restrooms on site. Parking lot went from a dozen spots to nearly 30!
2.5 blocks from Lincoln Avenue (entry-level) disc golf course, which is fun and also a part of the Lake County Disc Golf Trail.

Cons:

Only 9-holes... but 36 options!!
This is a mixed use park. Bikes and pedestrians will ALWAYS have right-of-way!
Bike Paths and beyond will ALWAYS be Out of Bounds. NEVER throw across a bike trail... EVER!
The disc golf fairways and the bike trails do not intersect (transition walks do) but that doesn't mean that the bikers won't deviate from their designated trails... sometimes using the #7 tee pads as jump ramps. The City erected fences in front of the tees to keep the bikers from jumping off the tees @ #7.

Other Thoughts:

9th Avenue park (aka: "Nature Park") dgc in Mt Dora, FL is one of the newest Hosfeld-designed 9-hole course on the Lake County Disc Golf Trail. Set in a former citrus grove, now oak grove, (along with pecans, camphor and a few orange trees) the course begins just beyond the practice basket and is separated from the playground by a thick, healthy row of oaks. The White tee fairway has two rows of thick oaks between it and the playground.
Hole 1s Blue and White tees run down parallel alleys to a more open area, Red basket is just beyond a dry retention area. Gold basket beyond the retention and into the oaken alley.
#2 fairway has a slight rise, followed by a slight dip. The Blue to Gold fairway requires a RHBH LtoR flex or an amazing counter spin hyzer-flip, to reach the pin, which has a nice green in the middle of the oaks.
#3 is unquestionably the signature hole in this nature park, with a fairway sloping down to Lake Franklin. The Red pin falls plenty short of the water. The Gold pin just close enough to the water to warrant caution from the tee.
#4 is the 1st of 4 par 4s on 9AP. The #4 fairway climbs the hill, away from Lake Franklin and back onto the rise, where the Red pin lies, and beyond into the groves where the grassy Gold pin area slopes gently away to the right.
#5s Blue tee rests just behind a beautiful oaken arch and canopy. The first 100' of the fairway rises slowly, then drops away slowly on the other side. An aggressive shot will likely have to stay low over the crest of the hill.
#6 goes up a steep hill and back down semi-steeply for another par 4 on a grassy green. The walk to #7 crosses 2 bikes trails. HEADS UP!! LOOK LEFT!
#7 has a fun downhill Y-shaped fairway Red pin to the right and Gold pin to the left, with a nice patch of woods to fill in the Y at the split.
#8 is only 401' from Blue to Gold but the uphill and the dogleg make for a challenging par 4, requiring placement-over-power. Though power with placement can earn you an eagle attempt at the Red pin. The gold pin usually requires more than a putter on your 2nd shot.
The walk from #8 to #9 goes between two mountain bike trails. Two fences will serve to keep feet and wheels on their respective trails. The 8-9 walk also crosses another bike trail. HEADS UP!! LOOK RIGHT!
#9 Blue and White fairways both punch out of the woods into their respective parallel fairways. Both Blue & White fairways exit the woods just before going over the dry retention area (which I'm told might be marked as OB during future tournaments)
I think the 9th Ave dgc is elegant in its simplicity and fairly efficient in its implementation. Fairly intuitive navigation and plenty of directional arrows where there are walks. You have the chance to play finesse disc golf or open up a bit.
A perfect counter-point to the entry level Lincoln Avenue park dgc, a mere 2.5 blocks away.
