Pros:
This course plays through a large, sprawling, mostly wide open community park. After a full 6 years since installation, this course is still in great shape. You can tell that it gets taken care of and is maintained well enough by the locals.
The tees are concrete and in great shape.
The Arachnid baskets are in good shape and catch fairly well.
While not many trees are present, the course designers made good use of what trees are there and then also incorporated the other features of the park to add challenge. The pond is close by on 2 holes, but should not present much of an obstacle for advanced players. The drainage ditch is used on several holes and can punish an errant shot without the chance of losing a disc. The course also uses a large hill that was created when the pond was dug. The 3 holes on and around the hill are some of the best on the course, with one playing up the hill, one playing around the hill, and the last being a long, top of the world shot back down the hill towards the parking lot. Hole 17 is a very unique shot for the area, since not a lot of elevation is present in Indiana.
Cons:
The vast majority of the holes play very close a walking path. We had to wait more than a dozen times on a cold, windy evening for people to clear out of our way. I imagine this park would be very busy on nice evenings and would really interrupt the flow of play.
A large playground has been added into the fairway on hole 17 since my last visit. This would ruin what is arguably one of the best holes on the course. With kids present, I would not want to fully commit to my drive and have it make it's way into the playground. Luckily, there were no kids present during my last visit so we played the hole without having to take that into consideration. You would have to play this safe and conservative with kids present.
No course map is available on site. Luckily, navigation is fairly straight forward and makes sense. The signs are in good shape, but only contain basic hole information. If you never looked at the course map in the Links / Files tab on this website, you would never know what the OB rules are supposed to be for the course. I imagine most casual players ignore the OB rules or have no idea that they even exist.
A lot of the challenge this course has is artificially created with lots of OB. While this can be fun, because it makes you think about where to place your shot, it can also be unnecessarily punishing to decent shots. Some of the shots that use the property line and the sidewalk as OB are very narrow, and even decent shots take OB strokes.
Hole 3 has always struck me as odd and in my opinion there really is no legitimate fairway for this hole. I always just throw what I think is the intended fairway and hope for the best.
Other Thoughts:
The wind here is neither a pro or con in my opinion, but I have yet to play a round here on a calm day. It is basically always present and typically adds to the challenge.
This is an average course and I enjoy playing it every once in a while just to play something different. It is near enough to Fort Wayne to not be a huge time commitment to drive down for a round or two. It is worth a look if you are in the area.
