Pros:
+ Mature course that's "grown in" without becoming overgrown. It's clear that a lot of time goes into upkeep
+ Great variety of open and wooded holes, and they're interspersed in a way that keeps the course interesting
+ For a course with so many wooded holes, you can almost always find a line if you've veered a bit off the fairway
+ After relatively flat opening holes, #5 - #7 show unexpected elevation changes
+ There's a small creek in the middle section of the property that comes into play several times through the round. The holes down in this section (6, 9, 16) are particularly pretty - you're playing along a flat floodplain through a grove of trees
+ Hole #5 might be the best on the course - it certainly takes the most advantage of the property. It starts in the woods. You're throwing up a slight rise, and the way out of the woods is narrowed by woodpiles on either side. Then the second half of the hotel is open, but bending to the right, and the basket is downhill and tucked into a protected green. It requires several different types of good throws, and I wanted to play it several times
Other Thoughts:
~ Hole 1A seems to be out of commission. It's a great water throw to start off the round, but the reeds have grown tall and we didn't see a basket. One of the other reviews implies that it's used for tournaments. If you're a first time player, just expect to play the main 18 without 1A
~ It's a 6400' course that squeezes every foot out of the par 56, and I walked off feeling pretty beat up. The two par 4's are in the mid 500's, and there's a run of three 400+ par 3's on the back 9, along with the 471' par 3 eighteenth hole. That's a lot of distance, especially because some of them are wooded. You might have a bigger arm, or play the course regularly. I just found that being so far off par on so many holes took away some of my enjoyment of what's a really good course.
COURSE AMENITIES:
Excellent signs, poured tees, good DisCatcher baskets. 5 gallon buckets for trash at most tees. Some benches. Hole 18 returns you to the parking lot
RECOMMENDED COMBINATIONS:
We made a day of it: starting at SUNY Brockport before Parma, then playing Basil Marella, Sawyer and the Woodlands. Parma and Basil are certainly the best of them - the others are for bagging only
