Pros:
-nice mix of open & wooded, longer & shorter holes
-the re-tire baskets catch pretty well; i had no complaints
-mixed tees but the natural tees are in pretty good condition and the mats are good
-signs at each tee
-8 holes have a longer blue tee that adds usually significant distance
-some minor to moderate elevation changes in play on a handful of holes
-the open holes have clearly defined fairways with tree lines that are thick and punishing
-the wooded holes mostly have fair lines (except the first two) but are very tight
-the greens tend to be tucked near tree lines or just around corners
-plenty of parking
-tons of other park amenities
Cons:
-pedestrian paths in play on basically all the non-wooded holes
-a couple of the short tees are awkwardly backed up to a tree line
-holes 1 and 2 are ridiculously tight. the long tee on 1 has no real line and on 2 the line is so sharp there's not much of a way to get there
-convoluted par system; isn't one par per hole good enough?
-park and gates close at dusk
Other Thoughts:
Regional Park has a nice mix of open spaces and tight woods. The majority of holes play through open areas that are flanked by dense tree lines. There are 6 wooded holes that play through those dense trees and most of them have a fair line and are some of the best holes on the course. I especially liked hole 8, the uphill hole 12, and the tight but fair holes 17 & 18. I liked hole 5 and 9 also, the latter having a cool green very close to the lake.
Some of the natural tees, the dense trees and underbrush, and occasional piles of deadfall give the course a bit of a scruffy feel but the holes are mostly pretty fun. You just have to make sure to watch out for the pedestrian paths. The short tees are good for a fun round or for beginners. I had 2 beginners with me (2nd or 3rd full round ever) and they faired pretty well. I threw some extra shots from some of the blues and they're okay, just adding a bunch of distance on the open shots but making the wooded ones (1, 13) much harder.
This course is definitely a big upgrade over Broadlawn Park for Ardmore. I think it's one of the better options halfway between DFW and OKC.
