Living on the Edge 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:Nov 7, 2020 Played the course:once

Pros:

- Good mix of open and wooded holes

- The namesake river and small rolling mounds add interest on a few holes

- Benches, trash "buckets", and other small amenities present at most holes

Cons:

- Short average hole length limits challenge, even on wooded holes

- Occasionally confusing navigation, not helped by apparent ongoing course updates

- Some fairways run too close together and could cause conflicts or routing issues

Other Thoughts:

River's edge Park is an interesting little course tucked between I-94 and the Little Calumet River. The course starts with several short, tightly wooded holes and ends with a handful of more open parks-style fairways. After Hole 2 there are a series of more recently added lettered holes, including at least 3 not currently listed on this site. There is a tee pad with no tee sign to the right of Hole D's basket, and you then backtrack to Holes E and F before heading to Hole 3. There is an unlabeled tee pad after 3 that aims towards 9's basket that acts as a 17th hole. This routing is less confusing than it sounds (if still not ideal), and it seems the intent is to eventually create a full 18 hole course.

The vibe is a bit different than any other course I have played. The drone from the expressway is ever-present as you navigate through the course, and there is some...interesting decor scattered throughout the wooded sections. A campsite of sorts including a practice basket and several lawn chairs is tucked between fairways, and there were a variety of Halloween decorations along the fairway of the "bonus" hole located behind D's basket. There are a number of homemade feeling additions to the course including cobbled together benches, bucket trash cans, and slightly crumbling brick stairs. A few boot scrubbers at tee pads and a mix of different basket types and simple tee signs add to the amenities. The result of all this is a course that feels like part of someone's backyard: clearly well loved but maintained on a shoestring budget.

The wooded holes require some shot shaping, and many fairways are quite tight, but the distances are almost all very short. The more open holes by the road are less interesting, if a bit longer on average. The creek neighbors a handful of fairways, but isn't close enough to really add much concern. Putters or midranges will be the best choice off the tee on most holes.

I had more fun playing this course than I expected going in. I'm interested in what this course will evolve into as improvements are clearly still ongoing; a lot of brush piles were piled throughout the woods. More experienced players will enjoy hunting for birdies on this course while the short average fairway length should prevent newer players from getting frustrated on the tight wooded holes. This course makes for a nice, quick round near the highway and, when combined with nearby Riverside Park, allows for an enjoyable morning or afternoon of disc golf. Stop by 3 Floyds Brewpub down the road for some great beers to complete the experience.

Interesting park course 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:Sep 7, 2017 Played the course:once

Pros:

This looks like a course that's getting some needed updates and care. The lettered holes appear to be newer and are definitely the best of the bunch.

- Holes 1 and "9" make a nice loop right next to the parking area.
- Teepads of some sort on every hole.
- Easy navigation
- Lettered holes were fun. Even though they're short, they stayed interesting and challenging.
- Good place to throw some putters and mid-ranges off the tee

Cons:

- Lettered holes probably need some of the scrub trees removed, still. I get that it's a work in progress, though.
- Some baskets weren't in great shape (hole 1's is a mess)
- Most of the original 9 is park-style with only a few obstacles or mando's to challenge you.

Other Thoughts:

We played this while passing through and it's an easy on/off the interstate. I like hitting courses that give a nice 30 minutes of activity and allow you to get right back on the road. Kudos to the locals for the time they're putting into it.

Nice Little Course At River's Edge! 2+ years

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:Jun 25, 2016 Played the course:once

Pros:

The first thing you notice when drive to this course is the great sign up near the highway. You know Disc Golf has arrived when it's being put on street signs.

River's Edge Park is a narrow little park squeezed between the river and the street. The river had little water in it but I was happy to avoid it and it's banks and brush anyway.

The course has a big sign with the course name on it. There was also a notice for Monday Night dubs. There are nice tee signs giving you the usual info including a map and some have a Sponsor's name or business. The mats are rubber. The baskets are Discatchers with the yellow bands. There is a nice new bench at # 2 as well as a garbage can.

# 1 plays 271' towards the river. Then 2 & 3 are shorter technical holes. # 2 is a 180' annie throw with a cool basket placement. Then # 3 plays 144' back. There are some nicely engineered steps going up and down a small ravine here. Then 4-9 play in the park's grassy area. 4-6 play out and then 7-9 play back to the start.

The course is a very easy recreational course. I don't think it's a particularly good beginner course with the river flowing so close.

Cons:

My only concern here is players throwing on # 5. I hope they have enough sense to wait on on-coming traffic before throwing. Maybe on # 9 also.

Some will complain about the course's lack of challenge or short distances.

Other Thoughts:

I see River's Edge DGC has a solid 2 1/2 but then it seems as though I've rated every one of the Chicago 9'ers a 2 1/2-, I can't help myself. First, these courses fit my game like tight pants on a hooker and secondly, I think these courses really meet the needs of so many players, who aren't ready to take on a Big Boy course.

Compact Course 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:Mar 29, 2015 Played the course:once

Pros:

Great beginner to intermediate level course on the north side of Munster. Very compact course.

Baskets - 9 Innova discatchers that catch great. Some of them are brand new, others are older and faded. They all have the hole number on them.

Tees - 1 tee per hole. Eventually they will all be gravel. At the moment, some are gravel, some natural, and some are rubber mats. The gravel ones are large enough for a good run up. About 4 x 10.

Signs - Current signs are hole numbers on a post. There is also a sign pointing you to holes 2 and 3 after 1. Once regular signs are added, I will update my review.

Variety - This is more of a short and technical course. Holes are on the shorter side between 200-300 feet. Several water hazards. Only elevation changes are the holes bordering the river. Everything else is flat. Hole one is tucked between the side of the woods and the river. Holes 2 and 3 are surrounded by trees with narrow fairways. Everything from hole 4-9 is mostly open with 1 or 2 mature trees per hole which create a line.

Water hazard- The river presents a hazard on holes 1, 3, 4, 7 and 8. On a windy day, you will need to be careful. Baskets are close to the river. Do not underestimate the river or the wind.

Much needed course for the area.

Many nearby courses that compliment this course.

Cons:

No true parking lot. Small birm on the side of the road to park.

Course use a course map as well as better signs. Seeing how this is a new course, I would assume signs will be added.

Not as peaceful as other NW Indiana course. Course borders the highway and it is very loud.

Since it is compact, fairways border each other. Could easily hit the tee of hole 4 while playing hole 1. 5-9 all border each other as well.

Only one tee per hole but not really room to add them.

Hard at first to find hole 1. Without decent signs, hard to follow on some holes. Had to look around but that isn't the end of the world.

Course still isn't 100%. Will update review once it is.

Other Thoughts:

I liked this course. The water hazards all made me thing and no hole was technically wide open. Enough trees to force lines. Holes 1-3 really stood out to me compared to the rest of the course.

Definitely a much needed course in the area since Munster Community Park closed its course and Matt Lovasko looks like it is on the way out as well (at least when I am in town. Have never seen baskets). Much better than most 9 hole courses and it is right off the highway if you are looking for a quick round to play.

Even if better signs were added, this course is a 2.5 in my book. I have played many 9 hole courses and this was better than ones I consider a 2 and not up to par with ones I consider a 3. I would recommend it to any beginner or intermediate level player in the area as well as to anybody passing through. Definitely stands out among the other 9 hole courses in the area.
