Better than any Youngstown courses 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Jul 9, 2020 Played the course:once

Pros:

Great signs
Good tees
Good variety of holes
The first par 5 is fun
Grass was recently cut
Seems well maintained

Cons:

There are a couple short holes in a row that are a little repetitive

Other Thoughts:

We played this and all the Youngstown courses in one day. This was the best one. I suggest driving south a bit to Lisbon rather than the Youngstown courses (metroparks in Youngstown is good though, You should go there if any in Youngstown)

Worth my trip to Ohio on Cinco de Mayo 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:May 5, 2019 Played the course:once

Pros:

The course is a decent mix of tight trees and open bombing runs. The trees really do provide a lot of the challenge on this course. On several holes, you have tight trees that obscure a good line to the basket, on others you have lower hanging trees impeding the flight of your preferred disc. The view on 7 is scenic like the park's name. You get a nice hike along this course which has some pretty trees and a covered bridge from 1878. The course is well marked and intuitive except for #4 which I'll explain later. There is a nice pavilion and a decent parking lot, with a practice basket near the big map. There's also a playground and grill. The baskets are all Mach V.

Cons:

The tees are in good condition, but they are wood chips. (update 6/2/2019: The white tees are now nice concrete pads!) I would have preferred a concrete pad, but for what they are, these tees were great. The signs on each tee shows the distance per tee, but don't give you an idea of where the basket might be if you can't see it. (Update 6/2/2019: These have been fixed and now show you basket locations) This is a problem on #4, because the only basket you see is #5. It's far off straight ahead of the tee (#5, that is) but in fact, #4 doglegs off to the right. I only learned this after playing the wrong basket and then seeing that the basket was labeled with a 5... so better signs on the tees would help. A couple holes seem bland now, but don't worry, those trees are going to grow (looking at you, hole #2)

Other Thoughts:

I was excited to come play here and despite the soggy ground, it didn't disappoint. I had to use a wide variety of my discs here and I view that as a really positive thing. During this one round, I used nine different molds to play as smart of a round as I could. Hole #18 in particular is nice to keep at par 4 because of the road that encircles the basket and is OB making the upshot that much trickier. The signature hole is #7, which is a monster downhill bomb and every bit the par 5 that it commands. I really enjoyed this course. There is a lot of challenge both in distance and in navigation through the trees. I definitely look forward to playing this course again!
(6/2/2019 update: This course was really done up nicely in preparation for the Scenic Vista Challenge. It was my very first tournament, and this course will hold a special place. I just wish it were a tad closer to my home. It's a really good course, and as it matures it's going to be great.)

Decent road-hugger multi-use park course 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Oct 21, 2018 Played the course:once

Pros:

- Intuitive layout, course flow
- excellent kiosk map
- course on exclusive park land
- scenic park

Cons:

- lots of repetition
- bland holes
- bulk of the back nine is road-hugger
- natural tees, rudimentary tee signs

Other Thoughts:

Decent multi-use park course. Nothing exceptional.

Holes 2-6 are open-field back & forth. Some moderately interesting/challenging holes from 13-17.

A nice little maintained park, easily accessed from the main road and has plenty of parking as well as a portable-potty by the first tee.

Hole 18 ends right by the parking lot. A lot of the back-nine holes run along the road or are very close to it.

Hole 7 is a huge slightly downhill mammoth drive hole. Probably the only hole that stood out for me at all.

With some permanent tees, and better tee signs with maps, this course would make it to 3.0 stars.

There's nothing particularly exceptional about this course to get it up past that rating. It's a decent round, but not one worth any sort of a significant trip to get there.

Note: There were signs up that wanted the course was closed during hunting season, which from what I recall were select dates throughout Nov - Jan.

Lisbon-bon 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:Oct 12, 2018 Played the course:2-4 times

Pros:

~Beautiful natural setting, very secluded park
~Three sets of tees accommodating most skill levels
~Great parking area with pavilion & porta-john
~Front 9 & Back 9 both loop around to the parking lot
~Disc Golf Kiosk w/ maps & practice basket area
~Decent variety of holes
~Back 9 is a wonderful layout

Cons:

~The terrain for most of the open areas is rutted and subjective to rolling ankles
~Natural tee pads are in rough condition, providing poor footing
~Navigation needs improved in some locations
~Course doesn't flow well in a few spots
~Front 9 is mostly unremarkable

Other Thoughts:

Completed and opened to the public earlier this year, I've been craving a visit to Scenic Vista and made the hour drive on a recent weekday. The course is located just outside of Lisbon on a road slightly off the beaten path. The park is a beautiful tract of land, heavily wooded in some spots although the course mainly plays in relatively open sections. A very serene environment, and a well maintained park.

A true 18-hole layout with red, white, and blue tee pads that do a solid job of mixing up lines and shots on most holes to accommodate repeat play and most skill levels. Concrete tee pads are a must have on this course due to the rough ground conditions and overall length of the white and blue hole layouts. The red tees could remain natural, but still need to be filled in, smoothed out and compacted with a better material.

Hole 1 starts in the woods, then you make a fairly long walk across the entrance road and play 2-5 around an open meadow, these holes while decent are overall fairly bland. The remainder of the front 9 alternates between wooded and open holes with 7 being a loooooooong downhill layout that is extremely satisfying to play. The terrain on the open front 9 holes feels to be old farmland cause it's not smooth or easy to traverse. You need to watch your feet to prevent rolling an ankle which distracts you from catching up to your shot.

A bit disappointed with the Front 9, I was soon impressed with the Back 9....this is where the course shines and makes me wish the entire 18 hole layout could mimic the scenery and fun level of 10-18. This section plays in more of a matured tree park setting with old log buildings, strips of wooded areas, roads providing O.B. considerations, and an old covered bridge. The holes here offer more variation of lines and challenges while still feeling engaged within the park setting.

There are a few long gaps between sections of the course that disrupt flow, and provide navigation concerns. Next tee direction indicators as simple as colored tape on the basket would quickly solve this.

A unique and well planned course overall, concrete tee pads, smoother terrain, and additional next tee arrows and tape indicators on the baskets would greatly improve the course experience at Scenic Vista. I would recommend playing here for anyone travelling nearby.

Not Scenic, but a Good Course 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:Jun 18, 2018 Played the course:once

Pros:

With a few World Class courses under J. Gary Dropcho's designer belt, (Moraine, Deer Lakes, Knob Hill) it is safe to say that Dropcho is one of the designing greats.

Scenic Vista is on the same level. For Ohio, this course has a good amount of elevation, and much like Ohio, there are a large amount of mature trees that litter the fairways.

The front and back nine both loop back to the parking lot and practice basket, the latter being a brand new Mach V, the same as the rest of the course.

Navigation was mostly intuitive, and when it wasn't, there was a good navigational sign to lead you in the right direction.

There are a good mix of open and wooded holes, as well as par 3s, 4s and 5s. On top of this, they are well mixed, so you are not playing all the open holes in a row, as well as not playing all the short holes in a row.

There is a large amount shots needed to conquer this course. A mix of open distance and controlled distance, hyzers and anhyzers, and all the other options.

Cons:

Being a newer course, there are a few issues that are in right now, that may change over time. They might affect my rating in a .5 direction, which could make this a 4.0 in the future.

To start, the rough is still thick in a few places that will eventually see a lot of discs, and will make some holes more challenging to find errant throws.

At the time of this writing, tee signs were just located at the white tee, and just had par and distance, no map, so take a picture of the overall map at the kiosk, and you may still have to walk a few off.

Tee pads are still natural, and they were flat and caused no problems, but with rain and frequent use, they could get worse. I hope concrete tee pads are in this courses future.

Gripes with the course that may not change, there are a few holes I would consider tweeners, with a few of the par 4s in the open being short enough to be a par 3, while a par 4 or two in the woods short enough to be a par 3 as well.

The holes across the road were underwhelming. Open, with a slight hill in play, but definitely birdieable with a hyzer or two.

Other Thoughts:

This course is a great place to play when you drive through the area, or drive to from nearby Pittsburgh or Cleveland. I will definitely plan to be back, and I hope that a tournament will be planned for here soon!

Exceptional course! 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Jun 10, 2018 Played the course:once

Pros:

- I will rate this course a solid 5.0 once the teepads are installed. The park is on a large, scenic piece of property in rural Ohio.

-Fantastic layout! As with most courses designed by J. Gary Dropcho, there are three sets of teepads, making this a course that can be enjoyed by disc golfers of any skill level.

-A nice mix of woods and open shots. The woods are challenging but fair; accurate shots will reward a good drive with a birdie look. Tree hits can really make you work to save par. The open fairways are wide enough to give some room for error, but it's rarely a straight shot to the basket.

-Elevation changes make for some interesting shots, but aren't drastic, making this course cart friendly and easy to walk and navigate.

Cons:

-Many of the fairways aren't so much grass, but a thicker, stiffer strawlike plant. Maybe they used to be straw fields? Not sure, but good footing is a little more difficult to get in some spots. This is probably common on new courses and should improve with time as the course gets mowed and walked more.

Other Thoughts:

Disc golfers in the Pittsburgh and Cleveland areas should definitely check this course out! It's a little bit out of the way but totally worth the drive.

Unpaved Road to Paradise 2+ years

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:Jun 10, 2018 Played the course:2-4 times

Pros:

+ Scenic Vista is incredible, and just needs the more permanent ammentities installed. There's a chance I'll upgrade my score to a 5.0 once I venture back down and play with concrete tees and permanent signs.

+ Scenic Vista is wayyy out of the way. I took a windy, muddy road for a few miles through beautiful woods and farmland before reaching a stunning piece of property known as "Scenic Vista".

+ Scenic Vista Park is an old hunting ground that has been transformed into a phenomenal disc golf course thanks to designers J. Gary Dropcho and Jason Reynolds. Dropcho has designed several world renowned courses in Pennsylvania including Moraine and Deer Lakes. I believe this is his first design in a Ohio, and it really is a signature course for him out in Lisbon.

+ First off, the course has an awesome kiosk. You'll find a huge course map, a pavilion, restroom, and a practice basket. The parking lot is spacious and would work well for a tournament.

+ Three sets of very unique tees for every single hole. From reds to blues, you'll find a new unique challenge for every tee, even if some are very close to each other. I played a round from the reds and a round from the blues, and it felt like two different experiences.

+ Great mix in distances as well as elevation and tree coverage. From the blues, distances range from about 200' to the monsterous 1200'+ par 5 that is #7. The land is fully utilized without feeling too crammed.

+ There's something for everybody at Scenic Vista. You'll find plenty of long bomber holes for guys with huge arms. But if your more of a technical player, there's several holes that wind through dense woodlands. It's a perfect balance, there's never a dull moment on the entire 18.

+ This land is almost exclusively for disc golf. You might see a hiker every once in a while, but the disc golf scene has taken over a big chunk of the park.

+ A few of my favorite holes include 2, 7, 15, and 17.
* #2 is a fun downhill shot coming out of the woods with a pin in a beautiful meadow.

* #7 is the 1,200+ foot monster that sends you down a gap in the woods that looks more like a ball golf fairway. It goes downhill most of the way, with a slight incline at the end. 7 would benefit from a few trees planted in the fairway, but it's still an epic hole.

* #15 is another signature open hole with a sweet fairway and rolling hills. There's a drop off behind the basket.

* #17 has a basket right in front of a covered bridge that was built in the 1850s or something like that. If you send one too far, you could find yourself trying to put from the gap under the bridge.

+ There are bright colored tee markers for now that serve their purpose. Permanent tee signs are coming this month from what I've heard, but the current temporary ones aren't too shabby. Permanent tees planned for next year. Right now, tees are a mix of grass, mulch, and wood chips.

+ Playing the course twice, I discovered several new lines that I didn't notice before. Many holes have multiple routes to the basket, so you can pick your poison.

+ Brand new Mach V baskets on every hole.

Cons:

- So, the course is brand new so I was hesitant on heading down to take pictures and write a review. The tees aren't currently permanent, and there's some high grass and brush on several holes. But as the course matured and gets worn in, you'll have a 5.0 gem for the state of Ohio.

- Besides the fact that it's a little rough around the edges, there isn't too much to complain about. Here's a few things I've thought of;

- The field that hosts #2 - #5 could be a little troublesome if there's multiple groups out. A few holes run a little close together. That's an issue on a few other parts too, like 15 and 17 for example.

- I think #5 and #2 are way too similar. Both are downhill shots out of the woods to a basket in the meadow. My suggestion is to back the tees for 5 closer towards the pin for #4. The fairway is already carved pretty well, so have most of the hole play through the woods, then have it jet out of the woods towards the end. Maybe put the pin right by the path and gates. This would not only make the hole more unique, but it would make the walk from 5 to 6 less awkward and lengthy.

- The limbs on #12 need to be trimmed up a little bit so the disc has a route underneath.

Other Thoughts:

Scenic Vista lived up to the hype, and it turned out to be an incredible experience and a great day. The course will begin to get worn in and improve every day.

Scenic Vista could end up as one of the best courses in the state... as long as it is MAINTAINED. Previously, the Park wasn't really tended to much. Now that there's a full length disc golf course, lots of mowing and clean up will be required in order to preserve this as a top tier course. Hopefully the locals and park district keep up with things!

I took some photos of the full course, and I'll decibels update them once the permanent tees are in. The pictures won't do it justice, you HAVE to experience Scenic Vista in person to understand how special of a course this is. Just be careful driving on the dirt roads to get to the course ;)
