Relaxing Private Play in the Hills 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:Jul 8, 2021 Played the course:once

Pros:

A secluded selection of par-3s that provides a pleasant sampling of gettable holes.

-Amenities: Natural tees that aren't rutted, some small paver tees, temp tee signs with number and distance, solid single-chain baskets. The hosts also give you a full-color map/brochure that is very helpful.

-Privacy: A private ranch pretty far from any cities means that you'll likely have the course to yourself and definitely have pristine views and that fresh, secluded feeling. For many people, this will make the experience extra special.

-Views: I would put it slightly above average for the Colorado courses I've played. At times, tall peaks are visible, but even when they aren't, the scrubby hills are neat.

-Shot Shaping/Gameplay: One tweener par-4, but otherwise all par-3s ranging from short woods to medium open shots. Generally on the more open side, but only a few holes are tree-free. Elevation is used well, as it should be in this environment. Speed control will be important for many greens, and you'll have to make choices about what shots you're throwing, but there's flexibility and definitely the potential for scramble after almost any tee shot. Definitely quirky ace runs, but also some intimidating shots like the top of the world dogleg on (17) or fun shots over gullies on (7), (8), and (15). Really not very many places to get in trouble.

-Fun Factor: For a good rec or higher player, the birdie opportunities are copious. The course isn't draining, which adds to the secluded charm.

Cons:

Not really much to complain about.

-Challenge: It's not a particularly challenging course due to the ease of scrambling, and it doesn't have any multi-shot holes. To me, that cuts out a lot of the variety that would make it a destination course. That said, it's still a fun romp, and I think that was the hosts' intention.

-Amenities: I don't subtract points, but obviously permanent baskets and nice tees always sparkle up a course.

-Access: Hard to get to, and you'll need to make arrangements about a time. Not a big deal, since that's kind of the point of a secluded private course.

Other Thoughts:

Skol is a fun, private course of par-3s that provides an exceedingly relaxing round. The shaping is very solid, and the setting is enough to give it an extra ratings boost. I have it as a 3.5. I wouldn't consider this a destination, but it was well worth visiting during my two months in Colorado.

Hidden gem in the heart of the Rockies 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:Sep 21, 2019 Played the course:once

Pros:

One of the most challenging, diverse courses I've ever played. Natural tee pads, high mountain elevated shots, several epic cross canyon and downhill shots. Basket placement makes for some unique but risky putts. A couple of elevated baskets and a couple more hanging baskets spice it up as well. The course has a good flow to it. The map helped, especially with the 2 blind shots. Not many places to lose a disc. My gf and I had the course to ourselves. Beautiful, scenic views throughout.

Cons:

The shrubs on holes 1-3 and 18 had us itching like crazy- they're unavoidable. A walking path from hole-to-hole should be considered for safety reasons, if nothing else.

Other Thoughts:

The hosts Gary and Kristi couldn't have been friendlier and more welcoming. We showed up basically unannounced but they were more than willing to let us play.

I immediately recommended the course to my closest friends and family. Definitely worth the drive out there.

Pros:

Excellent wilderness style course with great mixture of up and down, left and right, needle and open fairways. Not at all crowded, we were the only ones on the course. Wonderfully friendly and accommodating hosts, Gary and Kristi. The views of Pikes Peak were awesome.

Cons:

Had to reserve tee time through airbnb.

Other Thoughts:

We had reserved a tee time, but our itinerary changed and we actually showed up a day early. Gary and Kristi graciously allowed us to play anyway, no one else was on the course. This is a wilderness style course, the type I love. No cement tee pads, no manicured fairways, rugged rocky climbs, baskets on top of crags, tee throws of cliffs... The course is 18 holes and the map Gary gave us was very accurate and necessary; the course maps on this site are outdated. We played 45 holes, wanted to play more but had to head back to Denver for flights home the next day.

Pros:

Cool location for a course. It is easy to find each hole and there's some nice variety. Really cool, long, downhill hole. I appreciate the Minnesota Vikings pride from the owners.

Cons:

We lost one disc.

Other Thoughts:

We tried calling ahead but couldn't get a hold of the owners. They explained why we couldn't get a hold of them and let us play when we showed up unexpectedly.

Mountain course with great views 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Mar 18, 2017 Played the course:once

Pros:

Gary the owner is a great guy and makes you feel immediately welcome. The course has a good mix of distance, trees and elevation change. There are great views of Pikes Peak and the benches are great for relaxing. Basket locations are well determined.

Cons:

9 holes, but worth the trip especially if you are in the area for the fossil beds or Paradise Cove. Small signage, but easy to follow.

Other Thoughts:

Call ahead and make a reservation.
