Improved and a fun play 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Jul 4, 2021 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

This is a well-maintained place to play and improve your skills. There is some good variety. The back 4 have been trimmed back so it's not as narrow as it used to be. The tees have recently (May 2021) been refilled with gravel and they are even again.

Cons:

Occasionally, other Slater park users will be having a picnic on the fairway (baskets 2+3) or parked right on the out-of-bounds road (basket 5) and you have to nicely explain what disc golf is and ask if they can watch out for a moment.

Other Thoughts:

On U-Disc there is a layout called "Blue Plus 2," which turns the course into a fun 18-basket course by starting at each blue tee, throwing for the first basket, then throwing roughly from the first basket to the second basket, with each second basket being a par 2. This extends the fun and gives you more practice.

Slater Park . What The ?!?! 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Aug 20, 2020 Played the course:once

Pros:

Slater Park Disc Golf Course is located in a huge multi use park . The course itself is hard to find because there are no directions and many of the park patrons have no idea where it is . Once you find baskets , it is hard to find where to start . I only wish I could tell you . There are bathrooms close to the ball fields on hole #5 or 6 . Parking here isn't ideal .
The Equipment - The tee pads are boxed crushed gravel . There are sometimes several tee pads per hole . The tee signs here are pretty good , nice maps inside them with several distances , giving you options to play twice and have 18 holes in . The baskets are Orange DGAs and seem trustworthy to hold putts . The nicest thing is that there are 2 baskets per hole , giving you more options .
The Landscape . The course was mowed and paths on some of the back holes were cleared , but the course was a little dirty when I was here . It is park style on most of it , and flat . There is a narrow path that you will throw down on several of the back holes . On these back holes , there is a lot of tough overgrowth on both sides . Stray from the path and you may lose time and your disc . The last 2 holes head towards a woods . The whole park itself is gorgeous , but not necessarily the course .
The Highlights - just finishing the course . Staying on the path on the back holes are a challenge , and the 2 baskets and multiple tee pads are by far the nicest thing about this course , but it looks as though the idea was fought for , and won , then lost again .
No Signature Holes - #3 is a nice grip and rip hole with some canopies formed by mature trees that dot the fairway .
The Time , After finding it , I played the course in about 30 minutes .
Disc Risk - Very low the first 5 holes , 6 & 7 on the path make it medium Disc Risk , then it goes back to low .
Disc Golf is an added bonus to a beautiful park that the public seems to take advantage of .

Cons:

#1 Safety - Some of these holes play very close to the road . If on a windy day , a pretty decent intermediate can drift a disc into park traffic , I'm sure a group of some newbies or casual players will throw on the road a time or 2 . This is a populated park and the locals make this " the place to go " . You will have to be on the lookout for them both on the open holes , and the paths on the back half of the course .
#2 Navigation - The huge park has tons of roads to travel through it , and not one points you to where the course is . Even after finding hole #1 , the course breaks off and is hard to follow . Going from #7 to #8 is a disaster . Hoe about some Next Tee signs , or some tape on the spokes of the bottom of the buckets , to point you to the next hole ?
#3 The March Of Death - Hole #9 sends you to some spot that makes it quite a hike to get back to your car . Forget the online map . Buy a compass and a pack mule to carry your water . Maybe make this a 12 hole course so the end of it can be close to the beginning .
#4 Unclean - bits of broken glass , litter , garbage near the path . The park is nice and seems mostly kept up , but the course isn't . Maintenance must have abandoned this part of the park .

Other Thoughts:

It looks like there were enthusiasts that were gung-ho about adding disc golf to Slater Park . The park invested some money into some nice signs and 2 baskets per hole . Then , either the enthusiasts stalled out or were repelled by Park Politics and Park Board Intervention . Don't get me wrong . I am glad that they are introducing disc golf to the Pawtucket population . There are only 4 courses total in the whole state of Rhode Island . All of the locals seem to know where this park is , and many seem to take full advantage of the park's perks , but I only saw a man-woman couple playing a round while i was there , and they cut the course short after #7 because they didn't want a longer walk back to the car .
My Recommendation - The park is wonderful , there is even a historic house ( The Daggett House , ca. 1685 ) , that you will pass on your round . Disc Golf is shoved to the backround , though . It is a fine way to introduce the game to the curious locals , and even give a 1 discer or a newbie some practice , at least for the first 5 holes . Other than that , not much else .Locals might stop here for a round but many flee to nearby Massachusetts for some play . Intermediates thru pros are doubtful . Travelers would use this as a leg confuser than a leg stretcher . Course Collectors , it is not far off of I-95 . Collect it and run . Otherwise , I would advise to just pass this course right on by .

Most difficult 9 hole I’ve played 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Apr 9, 2018 Played the course:2-4 times

Pros:

-Baskets are bright orange and easy to see, they catch well also.
-Fairway grass is short, easy to locate your lie
-Tee signs are helpful with basket location, distance, and par.
-Navigation is easy, there are big posts next to each tee to help you locate them.
-Slater Park is really pretty, and the course highlights the beauty well.
-For a 9 Hole, there are some really long shots here, and some really technical ones too, a very nice mix of skill required.
-Alternate tees and baskets give lots of oppurtunity to play more disc golf, there is 36 different hole layouts.

Cons:

-Tees are gravel, not the best quality.
-The rough is unkept, impossible to get out of, easy to get into.
-Trees are sometimes just in the wrong spot, sometimes if the tee had been moved a few feet, the trees might be in a better spot.
-No benches to sit on.
-Hole 6 is the "Garbage Hole" most of the fairway is covered in trash
-Hole 9 is super far away from the parking lot, doesn't loop around at all.
-Hole 8 Blue/Gold tee plays traight into a bunch of trees with no indication where the basket is.
-Many of the long shots play next to a road, this is pretty dangerous for the cars.

Other Thoughts:

This course is very difficult, Hole 1 is par 5, 2 is par 3, and the rest are par 4. Some are questionable par 4's but a lot of the holes are well over 350'.

the Mario Lopez of disc golf 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:Jan 16, 2017 Played the course:once

Pros:

Tee pads are rutted, crushed gravel and aren't great.

I was happy after the first five holes, but then the course dips into the woods and gets weird. Several holes are drives through the woods with a fairway that is maybe 15-20' wide with gnarly rough on either side. This is not what good holes are made of.

The short-to-short configuration was decent, but I wouldn't have any desire to play the long tees here. The last few holes have tee pads that are not oriented toward the basket, indicating they were not installed by anyone who plays the game. Hole 9 from the short tees requires keeping one foot on the corner of the pad to have any reasonable drive up the fairway.

I understand that this was supposed to be a 18-hole course. That said, hole 9 finished nowhere near the parking lot, and the walk back was the longest I've had back to my car of any of the 175+ courses I've played.

Oh, one other thing. I was looking back toward the sun on one hole and saw the fairway glittering like a pit of diamonds. I realized there was broken glass. Everywhere. Even 50+ feet from any hard surface, there was somehow a ton of broken glass. Be careful picking up your disc. And probably don't bring your dog here.

Other Thoughts:

From what I've read, this was a tough course to get installed, with irrational fears from neighbors about dangers that are far less than what one could experience from monkey bars or a swing set.

I was hoping this would be a good short course that might give me reason to bypass the overly busy Borderland to get some solitude here. You might have the course to yourself (I did see one other group here), but it's not a great course right now.

Highly anticipated...falls flat 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Aug 19, 2016 Played the course:2-4 times

Pros:

Multiple tee boxes
Multiple baskets
2-4 are open layouts

Cons:

Unrealistic distances with flight paths
Unreasonable flight paths
Incorrectly numbered baskets
Hole 5 is almost unplayable as designed. I recommend playing the length of the hole outside the woods and then cut in at the basket.
Narrow wooded fairways with very dense brush
Seems thrown together with little thought

Other Thoughts:

The first time I played this course I was a confused mess. Lack of hole maps and baskets that were hidden from site lines and incorrectly numbered made me feel like I was shooting blind. The second time I played was better. I knew which tee boxes worked best with which baskets (near and far). A little experience allowed me to piece together a pretty decent set of holes by mixing near/far tee boxes and near/far baskets. You can not go to this course and plan on playing a "far pad to near basket" pattern (nor other set combination), the course wasn't planned out properly to do so. Some of the tee boxes and baskets are placed in completely unplayable locations and you need a little experience to figure out what works at each hole. Think disc golf a la carte. The first time you play here play the near tee pads to near baskets. This layout is playable as is and will give you better idea of what will work the next time you play through.
I think with some work this course could be really good. Hopefully they read these reviews before expanding to 18 holes in 2017, and maybe consult with an actual disc golf player for a better idea of flight paths. With some adjustments to the existing layout they could be on to something, they certainly have the space.

Disappointing 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Aug 17, 2016 Played the course:once

Pros:

Free
Multiple layouts
Directions to next tee
Holes 2-4 were scenic and very playable

Cons:

No hole maps with distance or par
Crushed gravel tee boxes
Extremely tight, wooded fairways with unnatural flight lines on hole 1 and 5-9.

Other Thoughts:

The short basket on hole 8 was either installed wrong or deliberately messed up and is almost unusable.
With many other good to great courses in this area, I will not be returning to Slater Park any time soon.

Trail Blazing 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Aug 8, 2016 Played the course:2-4 times

Pros:

Two brand new baskets on each hole.
Two tee boxes on each hole.
Multiple layouts for all skill levels
Layout works with busy park traffic
Good next tee and hole direction marker on course
Some cool pin placements
Trash cans
Bathrooms close by
Food vendors near by

Cons:

No Tee signs displaying distance or par
Tee pads are crushed gravel
Tee shots lack originality
Holes 5, 6,7 - built on existing path without being groomed for play
Hole 8 tee pad seems like it was crammed in as an after thought

Other Thoughts:

Oh how I wanted this to be an awesome course. It just isn't.
It feels like a course that was flung together with a "that will do" mentality. Like the name says, it's kinda more of a Disc Golf Trail, than a Disc Golf Course.
It's great to have two pads on each hole, but the tee pads are just further apart on each hole, and lack any real difference in shot besides distance.
Hole five is pretty bad. I love a tight line, I really do, but it needs to be a fair line. Five is not a fair line, especially from Blue/Gold tee.
Holes 6 & 7 follow the same existing path as five. Here the line is a bit more fair, however not by much.
I did enjoy playing holes 1-4. These lines where fair, cool pin placements, and kinda of cool shots.
The course is new, so maybe with input and effort from players we can make this thing work.
