Amazing Location, Poor Golf Experience drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Jul 28, 2023 Played the course:once

Pros:

-There's a permanent disc golf course in Ecuador! The views are amazing and the Black Sheep Inn is the nicest eco-lodge I have ever visited. I cannot say enough great things about the Black Sheep Inn, but unfortunately this review is for the disc golf course and not the lodge.
-At least there are no ticks or poisonous snakes in this part of Ecuador!!

Cons:

-There are no tee pads. You just tee off from the previous basket. For hole 1, tee off from the sign welcoming you to the course.
-The grass on holes 1 and 2 are way too long. It's like wading on a very steep hill in waist high grass. I lost a disc on 1 and skipped hole 2 so as to not lose another. This gave me a bad taste right away.
-Several other holes are blind and you'll need to walk ahead to check them out before throwing.
-I got a splinter opening the gate between holes 3 and 4.
-Hole 5 has absolutely no fair way. You play up a huge hill with trees all around.
-Hole 7 plays into a llama pen with a handful of llamas in it. The basket is IN THE LLAMA PEN! And there are LLAMAS IN THE PEN! I did not want to risk throwing at llamas or entering their pen (although afterward the lodge owner told me it would have been fine to do both).
-Baskets are homemade, leading to spit outs.

Other Thoughts:

Playing this course is a once in a lifetime experience... but getting through all 9 holes was a feat beyond my ability. The high grass on holes 1 and 2 really stunk. Looking for discs on these holes is painful... as is getting splinters on the old wooden fences that exist on half of the fairways. I really gave it my all to see/play all 9 holes. But once I saw that the basket for hole 7 was in the llama pen among real llamas, I called it quits. The course owner later said it would be fine to play the hole anyway and the llamas wouldn't bother me. But the risks seemed to outweigh the rewards and there was no other way to the tee for hole 8 besides playing to the basket of 7. Also, the pin for 8 is the same as the pin for 1, so I would have found myself back in the very deep grass.

If you ever have the opportunity to travel to this part of the world, DO IT! If you can stay at the Black Sheep Inn, DO IT! Brings discs to donate to the course and try to play as many holes as you can just for the sake of saying you played the highest disc golf course in the world! It's very cool that there's a disc golf course here, but unfortunately the course doesn't offer much. If the grasses were lower on holes 1 and 2, and I didn't get that splinter, and I knew it was okay to throw at the llamas and play into their pen, this could have been a pretty cool experience, perhaps meriting a rating of 3.5. Having a local to play a round with me could make it a 4 (but barely any locals know what disc golf is, even the people who work at the lodge).

Thank you to the Black Sheep Inn for an amazing stay and for trying to put this course together. Hopefully future visitors are able to enjoy their rounds more than I did.

Playing in the Ecuadorian Andes Mountains 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Dec 23, 2018 Played the course:once

Pros:

*Stunningly Beautiful Location: Ecuadorian Andes Mountains. The highest Disc Golf course in the world. (Hole 5 approx.10,750 feet above sea level)
*Altitude and wind are factors always to be figured in for every throw including putts. (keeps the player sharp}

Cons:

Although there is a course map there are no well marked tee pads, so one is kind of left guessing. There were some dug out areas to what looks like
tee pads/ pavers could be placed.

Other Thoughts:

This course is a lodge course owned and maintained by the Black Sheep Inn for its guests and disc golf isn't well known in Ecuador. As the sport grows I'm sure more people will want to play this course.
The lodge is amazing and the staff is delightful.
*High altitude makes under-stable discs behave stable. I lost a 175 star Mamba on hole 8 tee shot due to high altitude and wind. Went OB off a cliff, off the course.

Speaking and understanding Spanish isn't required but it helps.
