Good Course, But Not Great drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Apr 17, 2023 Played the course:once

Pros:

-Has a nice mix of open shots and more technical wooded shots...
-Great baskets and nice tees...
-Very well designed considering the property and space available...

Cons:

-If you miss your line of the shots on the escarpment, your round can turn ugly with lots of elevation to deal with on your next shot...

Other Thoughts:

-I was one of the guys that helped clear the course out before it opened, it has turned out as well as it could have and is a great addition to WNY disc golf....

Interesting Course with Difficult Footing on Many Holes

Reviewed: Played on:May 16, 2022 Played the course:once

Pros:

Variety of open park and wooded shots with elevation challenges.

Cons:

Steep walking and dangerous grades outside of fairways.

Other Thoughts:

This is a lovely area and like Bond Lake utilizes the escarpment to good ends adding elevation challenges and views. The layout can be confusing, so expect some extra time to navigate from hole to hole.

A little from column A, a little from column B 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:May 16, 2021 Played the course:2-4 times

Pros:

About a 50/50 split between Park style/wooded course.

Fair fairways in the woods - Clearly defined intended paths from the tee to the basket. very little "poke n' hope" type scenarios.

Park style hole variety - even the park holes have tree lanes, low ceilings, etc to force certain shots like rollers/low skips.

Tees and Signs - Very nice, even turf tees, all good size. Detailed tee signs with hole number, distance, hole layout, OB, and next tee direction clearly illustrated.

Trash cans/restrooms on site - LOTS of trash cans in the park area, and also a few in the woods.

Cons:

A few confusing/dangerous areas - One confusing area comes to mind, the first tee you see after finishing hole 13 is 15. Your natural instinct will be to walk to it, the tee to 14 is actually on the other side of a playground. Make sure to pay attention to the next tee arrows on the signs. Hole 5 is a steep downhill shot toward a road and the entrance to a cemetery. Easy to overdrive with a putter so watch for cars on the road. a row of pines have been planted as a future backstop but right now they're too small. you need to walk on this road to get to tee 6 from basket 5. there is no shoulder, so watch for cars. this road isn't particularly busy but best be mindful.

Litter in the woods - although there are a lot of trash cans around the park, there is a higher than average amount of garbage in the woods. Most of it is concentrated near the road, and it is definitely cleaner since the very early days of the course.

Multi-use park - Some of the park holes play in the vicinity of picnic pavilions and playgrounds. Even during peak park hours this will not render any holes unplayable, but best to be mindful of others.

Other Thoughts:

Fun design overall, good use of all areas. Park area is a bit flatter and the wooded area has a lot more elevation changes. most shots in the woods are downhill or flat which make for some fun looking flights. Lots of ace run opportunities and no water hazards or any serious risk of losing discs. The earlier the better during the weekend as the park as a whole fills up quick during the afternoon hours.

If only God hadn't created poison ivy..... 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:Sep 7, 2020 Played the course:once

Pros:

This course actually sits on an amazing piece of land which is called the escarpment. After the last ice age - the ice withdrew back north and eventually created Lake Ontario. When this happened it formed a shelf of where the lake once started and this escarpment runs from east of Rochester, NY all the to Way The Hell Up in Ontario, Canada. So this escarpment created about 150 to 200 foot drop and the designers of this urban park took really good advantage of the elevation changes. Some fun down hill throws and some challenging uphill throws.
The designers also were able to place 18 holes into a fairly small area (15 acres?) and it didn't feel forced like many courses with that same amount of land. Usually with that little land to work with, a smooth nine hole course makes more sense than jamming in 18 - so that was done quite well.
A good balance of hyzer/anhyzer and straight shots along with many of the holes offering several ways to play it. Some serous heavy duty Prodigy baskets that may have been of an overkill for a short, urban course - but they were definitely nice to putt on.

Cons:

Someone needs to start a GoFundMe page to raise about $1,000 to buy about 100 gallons of RoundUp to kill the poison ivy which is pervasive through parts of the course. It was so bad, the first thing I did when I got home was wash scrub any unexposed area of my body. The Escarpment creates a nice shady environment for it to grow in and it really was crazy bad in spots.
Hole 2 plays fairly close to a pavilion. Since this park isn't used that much, I don't think that would ever be a serious issue, but it's something that probably needs to be looked at again. (Probably won't happen until after the next ice age lol)
Making your way up and down the escarpment there were easily a couple spots that need to smoothed out as there were just enough rocks in the middle of fairways that would be perfect ankle breakers.
I didn't see any rest rooms and that would only be a very minor con as the course is in nearly in the heart of Lockport. So I'm sure there are lots of places in case a rest room was necessary.
The park has good signage and the flow of most the course was pretty easy to follow.

Other Thoughts:

I really, really want to give this course a 3 or higher but the poison ivy alone is so bad I just couldn't go above a 2.5. Also there were turf tee pads that were ok, but for some reason, they were above ground by about two inches. IMO - they should be flush so no one trips or stumbles on one.
Even though there are those flaws I talked about - the course does two great things. Brings disc golf to a new city and with it, new players. And Lockport (which is kinda) in between Buffalo/Niagara Falls and Rochester helps bring the two disc golf regions closer into one big disc golf region. That's probably going to take another dozen or so for that to be considered, but this course helps add to create a bridge to connect the two. I wouldn't label this a destination course by any means, but if ever happen to be in Lockport, take a drive out and play a quick round.

Better than Expected 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:Aug 7, 2020 Played the course:once

Pros:

- good mix of open and wooden holes
- bathroom on site
- flat turfish tees (might not be good in muddy wet weather, fine in summer)
- lots of holes with elevation in the wooded areas
- a little variation with right left throws ( most holes can be approached either direction)
- there are a few picturesque holes
- although course is short, there are some challenging wooded holes

Cons:

- there are not tee signs, although there are next tee signs on each basket and each basket is labeled. To find the hole you need to find the turfish tees which are not labeled
- some tees have visible baskets in each direction and it is not, clear except with map, which one to throw at.
- the tees are not cement
- course can be difficult to navigate even with map. The map which is on DGcoursereview is a must.
- course can be difficult to traverse, footing can be shaky with all the hills

Other Thoughts:

My dad and I drove from Rochester to play and had low expectations for the course. It exceeded both our expectations. The course was fun. The course caused some anxiety because of the possibility of throwing your disc cliff (discs would be retrievable) or having to throw with unsure footing because your disc landed on the side of a cliff. There is poison ivy but it didn't seem over abundant. Wear pants. The course is rather short although some of the wooden holes can be difficult. Players looking for big throws should look elsewhere. It probably isn't good for beginners due to the wooded holes.

Nice design on paper, but serious safety issues 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:Aug 4, 2019 Played the course:once

Pros:

On paper, the course itself is nicely laid out. Nice tee pads. A nice variety of different challenging holes, some requiring finesse, and some requiring power throws.

Cons:

1.) It has lots of potential, but is so unsafe. This park is overgrown in poison ivy. For a significant portion of the population it can be life threatening. Even in the mowed, maintained portion of the park the trees are covered and surrounded by poison ivy 15 to 20 feet up their trunks. I first encountered it on the 1st hole when I hit a large tree on the fairway and my disc fell to the base of it, landing in a thicket of poison ivy. About a quarter of the holes are located on the escarpment section, of which most are literally built on a carpet of poison ivy. The trails between holes are just stomped down poison ivy plants. The fairways there are carpets of poison ivy. It isn't just IF you land off the fairways and in the rough, or out of bounds and in the thickets. Your disc WILL land in the poison ivy unless you get a hole in one. The trails between holes in the steep areas are dangerous. I maintain hiking trails in the woods for hiking organizations. The trails here would not meet federal and state minimum safety standards for back country hiking standards. They are too steep with too many loose rocks and stones. 2.) Single tee area - only one type of marked tee area. No multiple starting points per hole for different skill levels. As a novice I can not heave it full distance, I miss having marked shorter tee spots for different abilities. 3.) Negligible makings, signs and confusing to play on.No marking posts to find the tee pads from a distance. No labeling of the holes when you are on at the tees, just the hole number marked on the baskets. And it is difficult to tell which tee pad is for which baskets, since the course weaves around so much you are not sure which pad goes with with which basket, and sometimes there are clusters of tees and baskets very close together. No maps at the tees to show you where the basket is for that hole, and many of the baskets are not in your line of site. And the longer holes are too far away to easily pick out the basket when you tee off. No arrows pointing out the direction of the basket for that hole at that tee. No arrows directing you to the next hole. 4.) I understand this is a new course. Hopefully better trails, markings and such will be along soon, and multiple tee points clearly marked for differing abilities. Those problems can be solved with time and patience. But the poison ivy is a serious problem. It would take multiple train tank cars full of weedkiller and many rolls of landscape cloth to solve the safety problems. Hopefully the trails between holes will be made safer and more navigable. But it will takes years of monthly applications of vine killer to finally tame the severe poison ivy problem.

Other Thoughts:

This is not a course for novices. And it is not safe for anyone who reacts strongly to poison ivy. You will not avoid it no matter how good you are or how precise a thrower you are. Poison ivy is even at the base of some of the baskets. Only those with excellent footing and balance should try navigating the goat trails between holes on the steep escarpment portion.
I will avoid this course in the future.

Well Designed Course 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Jul 10, 2019 Played the course:once

Pros:

Well designed course that makes the most of a park on the smaller side.

Has the feel of a nice woods or hiking course without being too strenuous for players that may have trouble with some of the longer courses with elevation.

Not much going on at the park when we played through and only a few other groups out.

Well designed course that I feel had a variety of different shots and some cool elevation to play with.

Manageable distances for my skill level, however I can see a big armed player thinking it was too short.

The shorter holes almost always have a very low ceiling or a mando that somewhat forces a tight line.

I like that the holes suggest an ability to cause some good scoring variation. Many are very deuce able but 4 or even 5 is also possible with a bad line.

Certainly a few holes types that are not really found elsewhere in the area.

Each tee had a boxed in turf pad that performed well enough for the distances required.

New baskets - I don't like the prodigy baskets much myself but having a target in great shape is always a plus.

Lots of shade on a hot day.

Cons:

Certainly some overgrowth which is to be expected in a fresh course. I don;t see that getting a ton better even with more players as it is outside the main lines, main fairways are ok. Keep an eye on what you throw and use a bright color if possible.

Only a throw or two that will really test a big armed players distance.

One particularly short hole that is a fun ace run but still feels like a short approach or long putt more than an entire hole. (I don't think they had a lot of options to do more with it so not a knock on design but still a con)

Bugs were pretty bad but not overwhelming

I'm sure they are still working on it but hole numbers by the tees would be helpful, they are on the baskets but nothing at the tees as of this review.

Other Thoughts:

If this was a little closer to my house it would probably be my go to course for when I don't have a ton of time to play.

Certainly a nice addition to the area.

Excellent course 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Jun 18, 2019 Played the course:once

Pros:

Varied design; elevation change; thoughtful layout; scenic; challenging.

Cons:

Tee signs not up yet; poison ivy on slope.

Other Thoughts:

This is a skillfully arranged course in a picturesque park. Combination of wide-open blasters on the upper portion and finesse-y wooded holes on the slope; pin placements in the woods can be VERY tricky! Tee boxes are dirt/gravel. The course does not occupy a large acreage but somehow never feels cramped. MUSTS: treaded boots and long pants (poison ivy, and you WILL be bushwhacking). AVOID: green or earthtone discs.
