Drove my Chevy to the Levee, but the Levee was overgrown.

Reviewed: Played on:Aug 12, 2023 Played the course:once

Pros:

Turn on to Riverfront Drive. Head past the rundown, or abandoned buildings. Keep going until you reach the 'Road Closed' signs. Now, keep walking to the first tee. And notice, there's nobody else around. So nobody will hear you screaming.
- This is either one of the coolest course locales I've played or one of the worst. Playing solo, I spent the whole round keeping an eye on my surroundings. Playing during a league event? This would be a great place.
- The course is either full of interesting, random knick-knacks or it's a bunch of trash piled up throughout the layout. Street sign as an obstacle on #2? Either interesting, not interesting, or ironic that it's for Green Street.
- Tight, wooded fairways are either an added challenge or added frustration, especially when the rough is so thick.
- Locale should be cool. I could see a food truck parked here during bigger events and adding to this vibe.
- #1's fairway is the beginning of the abandoned road. Tee off just beyond the closed road sign. Skip your disc on the road towards the basket off to the left.

Cons:

Layout was way too busy. With all the extra 'stuff' decorating the course, it felt more like playing in a dump area. That large concrete column behind #7's basket was peak landfill feel.
- A couple of awkward layouts led to me wanting to just keep the disc in the fairway, even if I'm only throwing 150 feet off the tee. #3 had the potential to be a really good hole. Having a walking path wide fairway, followed by a sharp dogleg right 3/4s of the way down seems a bit unnatural. Course had the same vibe on #8.
- Rough is rough. If you get off the fairway on #1, 3, 5, or 8, and you're searching in waste high (or taller) grass. Miss the fairway in the woods, there are vines, thick underbrush, risk of wildlife, trash, and other obstacles. I played putter off the tee on a lot of holes to simply keep my disc on the fairway, being more than content with par.
- I was definitely aware of my surroundings here. Having already passed one person pushing a shopping cart down the road, was making sure I didn't stumble upon anyone.
- Lack of amenities. Play. Get in. Get out.

Other Thoughts:

I wanted to like the Levee. I thought the concept was great. It's just lacking, especially when compared to the Augusta area's outstanding depth of great courses.
- How can you have a course that plays alongside the Savannah River and never see said river? Clear out some of the trees/underbrush and have a scenic tee shot on #4 or 9, or in the walking paths in that area. The course's best feature is playing on the banks of the river. Utilize that.
- If done right, this could, and should be a fun place. I played here at 1 on a Saturday afternoon. I had the course to myself. If it's abandoned midday on a Saturday, when is it getting played?
- The course should better utilize more of its surroundings. I like the concept of #1. There's a post-apocalyptic/Walking Dead vibe to turning a road into a fairway. Why not utilize the big hill to the right to create a fun downhill layout? Shoot, redesign hole #7 and make it a downhiller from the hill into the woods. It'd be a lot better than what we see now.
- Walking Dead was in Georgia. The survivors could be walking around in fields undisturbed when they suddenly came across a crew of walkers, and all hell broke loose. This had the same vibe. Just sayin'.
- Course needs regular maintenance, for sure. Do that, tweak a couple holes and this would be better. As is, this is near the bottom of my Augusta/Aiken course ratings.
