Pros:

course has an open terrain uncharacteristic for SE michigan, long holes with the option to play shorts- easy to navigate if you follow the painted bars on the baskets- lots of holes so you can play all day and not get bored- pro shop with dg merchandise, snacks and beverages- good pin placements considering the limited obstacles and elevation the course has to offer- concrete tees, tee signs with distance, nice baskets, 9 loops back to the parking lot before ten- 13 signature water hole

Cons:

the course lacks a "natural" setting, you have a nice view of traffic on Grove and Bridge street from nearly every hole, the course is directly under the flight pattern for the willow run airport, it is often littered with trash, OB zones aren't always clearly marked, there are only a few places to sit- course offers little shade and can become windy

Other Thoughts:

i sometimes crave going to this course

Great Open Course and Amazing Proshop 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Sep 9, 2010 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

What an amazing course to work on your long game. Practically a driving range on a few holes. Approaches are usually somewhat technical. This course was a former crappy ball golf course, but was recently converted into a wonderful disc golf experience. Basket markings leading to next tees as can be seen here should become a universal standard. The only real chance for losing a disc is on the water holes or getting it stuck in a tree. The on-site "Throwshop" is worth the trip alone. (Dogs are welcome on the course)

Cons:

People complain about the fence like it's the worse thing ever. I say learn to love the fence. Have you taken a close look at what's on the other side of it? Let's just say the fence isn't trying to keep you in. Errant disc throws over that fence might anger a local vagrant, or just get quickly "beaten in" by an ice cream paint job driving by. Just go buy another in the Throwshop. Bugs and trash are occasionally an issue, as are naked disc divers in the amazing water hole. The positives far outweigh any negatives however. Don't pass up this unique experience!

Other Thoughts:

Lakeshore and the crosstown Rolling Hills make up a disc golf duo that shouldn't be missed. The Ponds at Lakeshore might be the least stressful round of disc golf you'll ever play.

2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Aug 12, 2010 Played the course:2-4 times

Pros:

- Wide open shots. It's hard to lose a disc here (not impossible!).
- One of the best disc golf stores I've been to is on the course. The Throw Shop has great prices and a huge variety.

Cons:

- Not in the best area, but I wouldn't say the course is unsafe.
- Lacking trash cans on a lot of holes, so trash just piles up near the tee pads.
- Signage is sub-par, and following the course can be a little confusing for newcomers.

Other Thoughts:

The course is a former ball golf course, which makes for a lot of long shots. Plenty of obstacles, yet wide open spaces for trying some power shots. Not a bad course, and it's close to home. Follow the painted bars on the basket to find the next hole.

Great, open course 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Aug 6, 2010 Played the course:once

Pros:

I've only played the course once, but I would definitely come back again. The holes are all marked with distance, hole number, pictures, and shot approach. There are typically two tee boxes on each hole. I downloaded the map off of the files sections, it helped quite a bit. It's a great course for beginners and intermediates. There were about 4 holes that are perfect ace runners. Hole #4 was really fun with the giant downed tree backing up the hole. Hole #13 is a beast, I recommend using the white tee and going around the pond. I have the distance make it over but the pond is pretty daunting from the pro box. Holes #16-18 are real fun.

Cons:

I don't really have any cons. I rated it 3.5 because there isn't a whole lot of variety in the holes. Most are pretty straight with very few trees. I tend to enjoy the heavily wooded courses a little more because of the challenge involved. The Throw Shop was closed when I played here. We finished up at about 12:15pm. They open at 12. It's a little bit challenging to navigate only because the fairways are tight and close together. So we would see a few tee boxes around but have to look at the map. The posts are all marked so it's easy to figure out once you get to the box.

Other Thoughts:

I spent about 15 minutes looking for a disc on hole #14 that soared into the trees by the pond.

Ponds at Lakeshore 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Jul 17, 2010 Played the course:once

Pros:

I recently purchased several new drivers (distance and mid) and this course was the perfect venue in which to practice throwing them! The holes were open and when there were trees, it felt natural and challenging. Also, the Throw Shop is amazing! The guy working it today was nice and knowledgeable and my buddy and I talked to him about all sorts of stuff for almost an hour!

Cons:

The area is kind of shady and there was a large amount of trash build-up at the majority of the tees. Other than that, I guess a few more benches here and there wouldn't hurt and a good mowing every now and then would be nice.

Other Thoughts:

This was a great course and I'm looking forward to playing it again. I'll definitely come back after I build my disc wall rack and buy some discs to fill it! Being able to see and hold the ones I've been checking out online was a bonus, as well as getting the shop's associate's opinion on them!

Traditional Golf gets baskets 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:Jul 6, 2010 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

A lot of open space to really break out the big drives, or to try and learn to throw the big drives. You can play any disc and try a lot of different throws, knowing that your disc will be easily retrievable on the clear grounds. Quite a bit of challenge and thoughtful design, despite the relatively treeless terrain. There are a lot of quite long holes from the pro tees, while still being reasonable for newer players from the short. There's also a pro shop right on the course, with beverages and quite the disc selection. They even run a disc Lost & Found there, despite that replacements are their bread and butter.

Cons:

Formerly a traditional golf course, this course offers little in the way of corridor shots through trees. There's also little to break the wind on highly windy days, or to shade on extremely sunny days. Fences along the left side of 3 holes can make for a *long* walk to get your disc. I usually just pick the lost disc up after the round if I throw over.

Other Thoughts:

This is my most regularly played course. It ends up being pretty low stress in relation to a lot of more treed courses. No digging for lost discs and discs that have time to fly their full distance can do wonders for your disc golf self esteem when you're in kind of a slump. If you don't want to have to work hard at playing well, this may be the course for you. If you're looking for a course requiring super precise shots, go to Rolling Hills instead.

Reviewed: Played on:Jun 24, 2010 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

Wide open spaces to throw! I am not a super accurate driver so this course is great for me.

Has a super Pro shop.

Very fun to play.

Cons:

Bring bug spray if you try and play some of the new holes. The mosquitos are VERY bad back in the woods.

Play to the right on the holes near the fence. Its a long long walk around if you go over.

Other Thoughts:

The week before the 4th of July they shut the course down for a carnival. The course gets a bit trashed and takes a while to recover.

Cons:

not a lot of places to rest on course. to the left of the first tee is an 8ft fence and a busy road so if you shank one your going for a pretty long walk.

Potential Masterpiece 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Jan 30, 2010 Played the course:once

Pros:

Wide open, minimal bushes, thorns, poison ivy, etc. Challenging layout and environment (gets windy), tee pad and pin placement place demand on control to score well. Free, pro shop, not a lot of waiting on tee pads.

Cons:

A couple of the holes play close to the fence, which is very close to the road. Cars will drag an errant throw even farther down the road. Play it safe next to the fence.

Other Thoughts:

I absolutely love #13 (the shot over the pond). There is a layup area from the longs along the right hand side. It's where the short tee is located. If you're uncertain about crossing the pond with your drive, just throw either an anhyzer or a sidearm shot over into that area.

The apartment community will have events during the summer so be aware that the course sometimes won't be available. It Pays to call ahead.

This course will get better with age. Plans are in the works for a second more technical course in the woods south of the existing course.

Lakeshore 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Oct 2, 2009 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

Drains really fast, many opportunities to air it out, good use of land given dearth of trees, no shule, nice shop to purchase supplies, old golf bunkers used for OB.

Cons:

It's too open in places, very big-armed oriented with little penalty for wild shots, not mowed quite well enough to regularly drop down rollers, backhand rollers difficult to get down on some tees due to overhangs.

Other Thoughts:

Definitely a nice addition to the SE MI courses, there is no other course like this one and none better to work on your raw 'D' shots. There are 2 levels of distance that move you into scoring opportunities. 350' is the minimum needed to regularly get to or under par from the longs. If you can throw 400-420', another 6-7 strokes are there to be shaved off if you can put it near the pin. Short tees are available for folks who throw under 300' -- good players will definitely shoot well under par from the shorts.

Wide Open Plains = Fun Discing 2+ years

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:Sep 5, 2009 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

- Nice clean course, pleasant setting, with open design: encourages you to let loose and allows you to try various lines.

- Nice sized dual concrete tee pads and score cards with course map.

- Very forgiving of bad throws (it's nice not to pay for a bad shot in blood).

- More challenge than you might expect from course with so few obstacles and so little brush.

- No shule, very little chance of losing a disc (except for one hole over water).

- Pro-Shop on site with nice variety of discs at reasonable prices and people who KNOW disc golf. You can get some very good info in this place - see Other thoughts below.

- Great course for beginners.

Cons:

- No elevation changes (but you can only work with what you have).

- Chance of throwing over fence and having to walk a long way around to retrieve your disc.

- Few holes force a specific line, and some holes feel repetitive

- Signage could be much better, but I think that's a budgetary constraint.

Other Thoughts:

Notes on the course itself: Wind plays a significant factor. You may have to change drivers to handle head and tail winds, and many a putt will get pushed down or float up on you.

You'd have to search a long time to find a course that does more with less. Course designers can only work with the land they have, and the designer used nearly every tree on the course to make it more challenging.

Love the painted spokes on the basket pointing the way to the next tee: Blue for longs, White for short. Clever, low cost navigation aid that should be employed on a lot of other courses.

Big Arms and beginners should love this course. This course isn't epic, but it sure is FUN!!!

Notes on the The Throw Shop:
Don't play here before stopping in at The Throw Shop. Without doubt, the best selection of discs in the Metro Detroit Area. Literally 1000's of discs (some hard to find) at quite reasonable prices. Not sure about that disc you were considering? Check out the stack of loaner discs to see if the one you're checking out is in there - they let me take one out for a test drive! Try that online!!!!

The people who run this shop are among the most active members of southeastern Michigan's disc golf community. Good people who do right by the community they live in and promote disc golf in a positive way.

A good workout 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Aug 22, 2009 Played the course:once

Pros:

As many other reviewers have said, it's somewhat monotonous, but that didn't bother me. It's a great chance to work on your drives, and you really don't get punished for a bad throw, except if you put one over the dreaded fence.

The fact that the course is open and large means the wind gets cranking some days, which I like. I think it adds to the challenge, because you have to control your throws and keep them low.

I love the idea of painting one or two bars of the basket to show the direction to the next tee pad - that's very clever, and something I'd love to see adopted by other courses.

Cons:

A bit one dimensional.

Other Thoughts:

It's a bit of a workout for those of us over 40. The length of the course (I played the blues, which are significantly longer than the whites) is unusual in this area. I liked it because I really felt like I got some good exercise by the time I was done.

Very interesting bird life. I was often surrounded by swooping, silent birds, zipping along just a foot or two above the ground. I think they may have been swifts, but I'm not sure. Still, pretty cool, and definitely not something I've seen before.

Pros:

-Level cement tees(looks like 4x10).Most allow decent run up.- new chainstar baskets w/ next tee pointers.- Very nice pro shop(mon.-fri. 2-8, sat. 11-7) offering multiple brands. Painless disc location- even on long holes.- New posts w/ P.O.V. signs.

Cons:

-For 24 holes, not a ton of different shots needed (due to flat elevation and lack of trees).-Small trash cans fill quickly, (even if it's not our mess, you know who will take blame) so be prepared to pack what you bring.

Great for beginners.
Sand traps/OB is a nice touch if you play them into your score.
Chains have a blue mark on them to tell you where the next tee is.
The holes are marked to tell you par and distance and where the chains are at.
FREE TO PLAY!!!!!!!!!!!! all ways a big plus in my book.
only one hole has a high chance of losing your disc. (water hole)

Cons:

Not a lot of obstacles to avoided on drives.
Not a really technical course.
Hole #13 (water) I skipped this hole because there was too much of a high risk of losing my disk.
I didn't see a bathroom any where.

Other Thoughts:

I played on a Sunday in the middle of a nice day and there was a lot of people, but we never had to wait on any one.

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:Jun 5, 2009 Played the course:once

Pros:

Nice, clean, friendly environment.

The lake hole would be fantastic if I was confident enough in my drive to go for it. I skipped this hole.

Cons:

Every single hole is completely wide open with exception to the greens.

The 10' fence along the first three holes is horrible. You're looking at a ten minute walk if you throw over it because if they see you climb the fence you get ejected from the course.

I'd say the average from the blue tees is 400' but hole two is a ridiculous 900'.

Other Thoughts:

Update 06/27/2012

Since originally writing my review I have had three years of experience and working on my game. I played here today and found that I enjoyed this course very very much. The fence may still be a problem for some people but that is literally the only negative I can list.

Maybe it's my improved game that increased my level of enjoyment? It's quite possible.

Upping the review from 2 to 4 and removing the comment about paint on the targets not always pointing to the next tee.

Great course.

Reviewed: Played on:May 30, 2009 Played the course:once

Pros:

- A great course for first-timers, with the exception of the famous water hole
- The few trees that are present are utilized extremely well to give good technical challenges in what is really a very open area
- Conversion of sand traps to OB areas makes for a nice added challenge that you can either use or not, as you see fit
- Paint on basket spokes pointing to next tee is a FANTASTIC idea that other courses (I'm looking at you, Hudson Mills) should adopt

Cons:

- Though the openness is nice for new players, it's a little TOO open. I didn't ding rating for this much, though, because you can only work with what you have, and as stated above, the existing trees are used very well
- The fence. Sigh. If you lose one over the fence on hole 1, it's easy enough (sorta) to run around and get it, but losing one over the fence on other holes leads to great temptation to break The Rule.

Other Thoughts:

The Rule referred to above is "Thou shalt not climb over or under the fence around the course, or we might stop having free disc golf or disc golf at all". None of us have broken it, but I've seen others doing so, as the worry your disc will be gone by the time you leave is high ...
