Small Towers

Reviewed: Played on:Aug 9, 2023 Played the course:once

Pros:

The Turret is a short, pitch-n-putt 9-hole layout that plays in a small field. With a little hill and a lot of overgrowth, it actually offers more challenge than one would expect.
- This is generally a lot more fun than your average 800-foot course. It all centers around the hill.
- With some of the overgrowth, I approached it with the mentality of whether I could get up and down in two strokes from sometimes less-than-ideal spots.
- #2 is a fun, uphill, 88-foot shot. Do you park your shot for an easy two, or get aggressive and risk having your shot run long into the thick stuff?
- #3& 5 are both nice, little downhillers, starting on top of the hill to baskets in the open field. Do you go with a soft, floating shot, or an aggressive, straight-at-the-basket throw?
- There are two holes that are 46 feet or shorter - #4 at 44 feet and #9 at 46 feet. #9 plays alongside the building so there's a chance for a skip shot. There's also a chance you try to skip it off the building and you hit the glass instead.
- It's located at a disc golf shop. That a nice bonus. Actually, that's the reason you're here. Come shop for discs and get in a couple quick throws.

Cons:

It's an 800-foot layout with lots of waste high growth on top of the hill.
- In a small space, prepare for overlap. If I'm generous, the field where holes #1 - 7 exist covers barely more than an acre. In that regard, this course does an outstanding job. On the other hand, it is a cramped layout.
- #4 is a 44-foot shot over top of tall weeds to the basket. I landed 10-feet from the basket and it took me 2-3 minutes to find my disc as it sunk in the thick stuff.
- #7 is a weird, short long putt, 90-foot throw. This actually might have been the worst hole on the course.
- With holes so close together, a little more signage would be useful.
- #9 is either interesting or bad. You decide.

Other Thoughts:

Turret was good for a quick round. I had 30 minutes to kill before an event on a random Wednesday morning. I was in and out of here in under 15.
- This is a good course for throwing a disc in one hand while holding your beer in the other.
- A little more clearing, installation of steps to get up and down the hill would be nice.
- Good for casual players. Throw somewhat straight and you'll do ok here.
- Due to the lack of signage, I didn't play #8. Based on the tee markers, I thought I was playing a previous basket a second time. Wasn't until I was leaving the parking lot that I noticed this other basket off to the side.
- For such a short course, it's pretty decent. The overgrowth factor does create a lot of 'recovery' type of shots. In that sense, it's good for practice.
