Weddington Middle School 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:Jan 29, 2022 Played the course:once

Pros:

Weddington Middle School offers a decent variety for a school course meant to give students exposure to the sport. The course felt like more than just nine baskets thrown in a field, as there are some holes where gaps must be hit either entering or exiting the trees. Holes 1 & 6 played with initial gaps to hit while Holes 5 & 9 had late gaps to navigate. Holes 2 & 7 had trees to angle your shots around or were along tree lines.

There isn't a whole lot of elevation to be utilized here, but the way it was used was well done. Hole 5 is a fun, slight uphill shot. My favorite thing was the way the hillside around Hole 2 and Hole 3 is utilized for risk/reward. Hole 2's fairway is lined with trees to the left and a steep hill to the right (for the first half). Hole 3 is a short ace run hole, right on the edge of a steep hill. This is a great introduction to the concept of death putts to the students. The fairway for Holes 4 & 7 run similarly along the side of a hill, though maybe not one that is quite as pronounced.

Course was easy to navigate, and the signage was more than adequate. The DISCatcher baskets were all in decent condition, and the natural tees are not showing any real signs of erosion. Other than the empty soccer goal laying down on the edge of Hole 1's fairway, the upkeep issues I had read about seem to be, at least of the time I write this review, to be more under control.

Cons:

Weddington Middle School suffers from the same issues that plagues most courses of this nature. For most players that are no longer beginners, it is going to be a birdie/ace race at best.

While most of the holes are designed in a way to try to give them their own unique identity/flair, some of the holes really fail to stand out, even amongst a typical pitch-and-putt course. Hole 8 is probably the worst offender in my mind.

It felt like a crime that Hole 2 didn't throw to Hole 3's basket. Outside of the risky green on Hole 3, it is the definition of a filler hole. If Hole 2 played to Hole 3's basket, it would easily have been my favorite hole on the course, essentially being a valley shot where the elevation usage would be extremely noticeable despite the tee and basket essentially being the same elevation. This would have marked a truly memorable hole for the course, especially if you decide to tee off from further back, somewhere on the trail that leads into the woods.

The tee sign to Hole 5 has fallen over, though this would be a simple fix.

I could see an errant drive from Hole 6 ending up in the entrance road to the school.

Other Thoughts:

I'm giving Weddington Middle School a 1.0 rating for now. The course doesn't manage to stand out from similarly designed courses or provide any truly memorable shots that will convince players a second trip is worth it. Though I do think that for any students or locals who are looking for a practice course, Weddington Middle School could still fit that bill, plus there is likely a fun safari layout here somewhere.

Decently Enjoyable

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:Jun 22, 2020 Played the course:once

Pros:

Weddington Middle School is a basic 9-hole layout that offers a good mixture of wooded and open holes. Consider it a very basic introduction to the game for middle schoolers.
- At the most basic level, I'd consider six holes decent to enjoyable and only three basic/poor. #1 starts in the woods, with a doglegged fairway to a basket in the open. #5 & 9 are the opposite, with players teeing off in the field to a basket in the woods.
- #6 is your one exclusively wooded hole with a semi-tight fairway. It's a short layout, so you're only throwing putter.
- #2 & 7 are field holes with players having to throw alongside side/around the woods.
- All six of these holes give players a level of challenge and/or good practice opportunities. Only way you're going to learn new throws or how different discs fly is with practice.
- Excellent course for beginners. #2 is the longest hole at 279 feet. The next longest hole is #5 at 202 feet. The other seven are all under 200 feet.
- Course has a very easy flow to it. The key is finding the first hole. More on that later. After that, the tee for each subsequent hole is near the preceding hole's basket.

Cons:

A sub-1500 foot layout may be frowned upon by some. For those players, they'll most likely be on a birdie fest here.
- Course is unavailable during school hours.
- #3 and 4 are two bad filler holes, wide open fairways at 104 and 136 feet respectively. At least eliminate one of them. Or better yey, replace them both by using other portions of the land to create something better.
- The course is listed as Weddington Middle School. To park next to #1 & 9, you actually have to enter at the elementary school's entrance off Twelve Mile Creek. If you enter at the middle school's entrance, you'll park closest to holes #5 & 6.
- The grass was waste high on holes #1 & 9. It's clear the grounds crew is only mowing the fields and not doing any string trimming work. Tall grass also means players should be on the lookout for ticks.

Other Thoughts:

Weddington's school course feels like most basic 9-hole school courses. Actually, this middle school course may be easier than some of the elementary school layouts I've played.
- #5 is the best hole on the course by far. A slightly uphill 202-foot layout whose fairway narrows once it enters the woods. This hole actually requires a good tee shot to get your birdie. #2 is the only other hole on the course that requires a good tee shot to get into birdie position.
- If you view this as a practice course, then the course serves a great purpose. Considering the open area you can use for field work, it can be very useful for locals.
- This could be a fun ace-race course. Compared to Cuthbertson 10 minutes away, this course is considerably easier.
- It's good for what it is. It serves its purpose as a school course. Compared to the bigger disc golf scene, it's not as good. You can still have fun here. Just don't expect greatness.

It's A Course, Of Course 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Jun 23, 2020 Played the course:once

Pros:

The course is great exposure for students to disc golf.
It is for the most part an ace hunting kind of course, if that's what you're into.
There are tee signs with hole numbers and distances for each hole.

Cons:

A good chunk of the holes is basically baskets in a field, with hole 3's basket being closer to 2's tee than 2's basket. My rather errant shot from 2's tee was actually much closer to the basket for 3 than the basket for 2, but it wasn't that horrible of a shot. The same can be said for 4's basket and 8's tee.
I wasn't a fan of hole 6, mainly due to the level of maintenance required to keep it playing well, which clearly is not being done. It could be made better by moving either the basket or the tee out of the wooded area. I'll stop short of saying it's a bad hole.
Speaking of bad holes, hole 9 is just that, bad. You tee off from beside a parking lot, throwing into a lightly wooded area with knee high weeds. The weeds around the basket were calf-high when I played. This is not only not a very good hole, it's inappropriate for its target audience, middle-schoolers, and could lead to some frustration of lost discs. The previously mentioned hole 2 is also inappropriatley long for the target audience of the course. It could easily be shortened, which would also eliminate the possible confusion with hole 3.

Other Thoughts:

If you like to bag every course in an area, give this one a whirl. That's about the only reason to play it though. I certainly won't go out of my way to play it again. There was not one shot that I looked at and thought, "That's interesting," nothing there to draw me back.
