Beginner's Course in Deteriorating Shape

Reviewed: Played on:Jun 10, 2024 Played the course:once

Pros:

I genuinely enjoy beginner's courses. Though I started my journey in disc golf long ago, I still appreciate a chance to go out with just some mids and a putter and see how I can do. Even more, I appreciate what a course like this can do for the community as a whole, who need alternatives to the giant courses so much more popular to build. With that in mind, then, this is a fun course to come fill an hour. I think I used a fairway driver once, but most everything else is mids and lower. There are a handful of fun shots here, especially the back half which are consistently downhill throws across a driveway.

The park isn't very large, though there is a ton of parking here. The course itself is mostly wide open lawn, with some nice, old trees dotting the fairways. We came on a sunny morning and it was certainly a beautiful walk. That's amplified by the Ohio River running right alongside the course. There is a deck where you can go watch the river a moment and you play close enough to see it on multiple holes. It's not an industrial spot either, it really is a nice section of riverway.

Cons:

There is definitely more con than pro to this course. It's a pitch and putt course, which I started by saying I enjoy, but that also means the bar is lower to begin with. I don't know the history here, but it looks as if the course flooded multiple times. That flooding brought sediment that swept up and literally changed the shape of the park. Then they seem to have just let weeds grow in on top of that. So the result is that most of the tees are gone. In fact, on the front nine the spots where apps say there should be tees are often not even flat ground anymore. On the back nine, there are a few old tee signs left, but mostly picking spots on the grass. They are missing two baskets and from the sounds of these reviews they have been gone for years. The 15th basket is gone and the layout on UDisc accounts for that, but 5 is gone also. We ended up playing to a post. The flooding has damaged fairways, so one of the baskets now sits comically close to the ground.

Putting all of that aside, I can't imagine even the original pre-damage was all that incredible. This is a short course, even for a beginner's course. There just isn't a whole lot here.

Other Thoughts:

I don't believe there are any restrooms here. We couldn't find any.

Could be a good 9-12 hole course 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:May 11, 2018 Played the course:once

Pros:

Nice course map on hole one. Lots of parking either to Start on hole 1 or 15.
Very nice large trees throughout the park along a pretty river carved against a giant west Virginia-esque ravine.
Cool looking blue disc catchers in great shape (except poor hole 5 which is ripped out of the ground.) There's also a nice elevated tee on a stump.

Cons:

One of the worst designed courses I've ever played. For such a pretty park with so many trees there's basically no challenges. It's a stand still putter shot in every hole. The course is extremely short even for a pitch and putt beginner course. Just look at the course map and you'll understand. They have way to many holes on such a small park. Also hole 5 was ripped up from the ground when I played. Tee markers were missing from a lot of holes, and teepads were often overgrown.

Other Thoughts:

This course has a ton of potential if they took out 7-9 baskets and redesigned it. After a few holes, I started playing my own alternative layout while still throwing one from each teebox to get a feel for the course. You can easily have a great mix of long and short holes on this course with different shaped shots and even bring water into play. It's a pretty park, just too crowded for an 18 hole layout.

Pros:

Now I have a better reason to stop in Wheeling other than going to the Casino a couple blocks away or a Wheeling Nailer minor league hockey game (AA team for the Penguins).

Favors a LHBH player

Well descriptive tee signs and kiosk

Hole # 11 can be a pain. I had a decent drive, putted to the elevated basket (on a tree stump) only to have it roll down the the edge of the hill and with speed that I was yelling at it to sit (don't think it could roll into the river, but...). got a 5 on that hole, lol.

Every hole is Ace able

Boat ramp available (how cool is that, if you had a boat and you could drive it to the course for a quick round!!),

Cons:

natural tees.

closeness to the river (with 1/2 of the course. though I'm thinking if there's a flood, all the course could be affected)

Other Thoughts:

This Disc Golf course to me is more than what appears to the naked eye. It's a simple 18 hole course placed on a very small tract of land, but it's genius for the park dept. to put a course here. Why not. It's walking distance away from the casino. It's a good course to hone your (short) game, It's a course that the neighborhood kids can learn on and enjoy. I played in less than 20 minutes.

The area might be rundown for some tastes, but I love the architecture of the homes on the island and though it's not a "destination" course. I wouldn't mind it being my neighborhood course!

The neighborhood kids thought Santa was playing the course when I played it. I gave them a few ho ho ho's (Santa laughing).
