Nice Schoolyard 9er

Reviewed: Played on:Apr 7, 2023 Played the course:once

Pros:

-Excellent Baskets
-Quick Play
-Tee markers are OK

Cons:

-You're basically teeing basket to basket
-Very flat
-One marshy area to work around (#2)
-Some equipment to work around (#6 and #7)
-#9 leaves you in the middle of the field

Other Thoughts:

Wilton HS is a nice little 9er set around a high school baseball field. There was a fair amount of area to work with, so it's not terribly crammed, but at just over 2500', not a long course. The course starts near the left field corner of the ballfield. I parked near here and it worked out fine. #9 does end in the middle of the field, so there is a bit of a walk back. Baskets are top notch. Tees are marked with a small slab of concrete with the # and distance on each along with 2 arrows pointing you in the right direction. I agree with wolfhaley that these would be a little better just a few more feet from the previous basket. Terrain is flat. Only bubble is a marshy area on #2. There are a couple of equipment pieces in your line on both #6 and #7. I would have liked to see full concrete pads, maybe a layout that stayed away from the equipment and finished a little closer to the start. Nitpicky little things, but overall a well done course for the space. I would play often if it was closer. A bit out of there for me, but would enjoy a round again if in the area.

Pros:

Wilton HS DGC is a pretty standard HS course. Plays around the outskirts of the school property and alongside the obligatory baseball field. The holes are basically played from basket to basket, but this one is actually marked so you know you're playing the intended layout, not just some random safari deal.

The baskets here are top notch. Innova Discatcher Pro 28's which are all in perfect condition and catch like a dream. These are all powdercoated a beautiful dark blue on the top band, with the hole number on them even. Couldn't ask for anything more. These things are stellar. One basket and pin position per hole.

The flow of the course, as mentioned earlier, is very easy to figure out. Essentially basket to basket. There's no tees or signs, but there's small concrete slabs in the ground which serve as the "tees". These have a couple arrows pointing toward the next basket, distance and say which "basket" # you're on. All of these are located right next to the basket you just holed out on so there's no wandering around searching for them. Nicely done in my opinion.

Pretty much wide open on every hole. There is a small, marshy area to contend with on hole 2, though it's barely in play for most moderately capable players. Hole 7 has some random posts for something or another in the line of play too, other than that flat and nothing in the way.

The course is in a tiny Iowa town, never going to be busy and a great area to do some field work before or after your round. Permanent, well kept and free to play.

Cons:

The "tee" stones could be a bit further away from the baskets. I teed off from near them on a few holes, so as to not break my hand on my follow thru on the prior basket. Nitpicky, sure, but c'mon. Move them 8 to 10 feet away from the basket at least.

The course is on school property, so it's not playable during school hours or when there's activities going on out here.

Not really a con, more a PSA. If you decide to play here I'd advise parking behind the school near the south side of the football field then heading east past the maintenence shed to hole 8. If you play it as hole 8 through 7 you'll save yourself quite a bit of walking. Not sure why hole 1 is where it's at. Playing it numerically also drops you off almost as far away from the school/parking lot as possible. Pro tip.

The tee stones distances weren't always accurate. I didn't measure the holes or anything but hole 3's was listed as 191'. It's more like 291'. I'm sure it's just a typo, and the worst of these, but the other's just seemed to be guesstimated too.

Other Thoughts:

If you're near here it's a pretty quick play. Not worth any kind of detour to hit this one. But it's not terrible. I aced hole 7 around the weird post things so it's going to be semi memorable for me. Had that not happened I'd forget all about this one in no time.

Honestly tough, this is a pretty well done school course. Better than probably 40 to 50 other's I've played.
