So, I work for an auto paint shop and decided to have some fun today while it was slow. I took one of my unused Z plastic discs and sprayed it with a quality auto paint. YES, I KNOW THIS DISC IN NO LONGER LEGAL! ;) But, it looks cool! The disc was first sprayed with a light coat of adhesion promoter that helps make the paint stick better to the plastic. Because of this, the paint is completely flexible -- you can bend the disc and the paint stays perfect. It has very nice mirror finish and turned out great. I'll get a bit more creative with the next one I do now that I know how well they paint. These would make a great looking trophy!...especially with a vinyl decal applied in the center, then clearcoated over.

very cool, it's not legal but would be a sweet wall hanger! maybe do a chameleon paint job? or something with a heavy metallic flake? I did a bit of painting back in the day, I can see where this would look very sweet.

I think the next one I do will be a pearly cherry black metallic with a bright green "tear mark" -- sort of like the monster energy stripe. I'll lay down the green, then lay down a jagged piece of masking tape and spray the cherry black over it. It is a very cool color and should look sweet!

WOW that's a great idea! Use some vinyl to make a sick trophy disc, or just do some great paint work and leave it. Hope to see more of this from you, Garret!

That's freakin' brilliant! Please put this disc in your full bag, take it out, throw into a tree, put it back in your bag, repeat 20x and tell me what happens. ;) Seriously tho, if it'll take some wear and tear it would be a novel solution to the short half life of RIT on discs, it'll look great for a long time but you can't throw it in tournaments.

Thanks, guys.

Adhesion promoter is something you can buy at an auto paint store -- you can buy it in aerosol form. All you do is spray a quick coat on the plastic, let it dry for a few minutes, then hit it with the paint. It dries tacky and helps the paint stick to the plastic. Also, it adds a flex agent so the paint won't crack when the plastic flexs -- they use this technique when repainting bumpers or plastic trim.

I don't know what it would be like to throw it because it is pretty smooth! The top is very slick, even more so than a brand new star disc! There isn't much grip. The first time I sprayed it, we shot it with a single stage paint -- it was a little grippier, but still looked great. We got some overspray on it in the shop, so I sanded it down and hit it with a layer of clear coat. The clear made it really slick.

I'll try another one tomorrow and report back. ;)

Hey, guys -- I thought I would post an update of my most recent work. I'm currently working on painting some discs for Bennett and just got a few of them finished up today. They came out great, so I thought I would share! Unfortunately, the photos don't do these justice as they really look much "shinier" in person. :) The first photo is of one of the discs primered -- they make excellent "canvas" for shooting auto paint as they are almost perfectly smooth and sand well. This first one is a Mako mold and had some nicks and dings -- it puttied perfectly and sanded right out. The light blue disc in the next photos is the same Mako with the paint applied. The last one is a driver with a very cool pewter metallic -- once again, the photo doesn't show the shine....in the sunlight, this baby looks sweet! I also have a purple one finished and a Ferrari red one in the works.

Anyway, if anyone is interested in this, feel free to send me a PM. If you provide the disc and pay shipping, it shouldn't cost much at all for me to spray them. They make great trophies or wall hangars -- if you want it as a trophy, I could even get some vinyl lettering made for the top relatively inexpensive.

Those look top-notch Garret, pumped to get my hands on 'em! Thanks for the pics!

If anyone else gets into this, it's a great idea just for a trophy disc to throw some vinyl on it, or to make a wall hanger. Very cool looking, definitely a head-turner. I need to get these out and make a design on one, I still have only used ONE of my original order from Garret!

I'll take a pic of my painted discs and the one with vinyl on it when I'm home.
