The Ask MJ & Comet Love Thread

was the all star layout and MJ missed hole 18 of all holes. 17 2's in a row. i think you had a put from the ditch on hole 18 didn't you MJ?

yea, unfortunately it was from the ditch and i hit the top of the basket on the putt. I wasnt low though!!!

HI MJ...
I have been playing dg for a few months and just fell in LOVE with it.
I try to get out and play as much as possible. I want to start playing in tourneys and maybe join the PDGA.
So, my question to you would be is what good advice do you have before playing a tourney???
What kind of excercizes would be good to make me get better at distances???
Thank you!!!

the biggest thing is to get your footwork down and get your lower and upper body in sync so that you can tranfer your power from your legs all the way to the small twitch muscles in your hands

MJ, got any tips for playing in the wind? Do you change up the discs you carry or ever use a different putter/putting style?

i do sometimes add one more stable high speed driver and a more stabe mid in the bag, but i dont change my putt hardly at all. Mostly you have to learn to get a clean release with as little flutter as possible and just realize that in a eadwind just take what you can get and dont over do it. Thats how you get into real trouble and make a mess of things

I asked in the McBeth thread as well. Looking for a Pro's perspective on gimme's and "must make" distances.

What distance do you consider a "gimme" for yourself?
Another way of saying it, At what distance do you feel 110%, it's going in?

Next, how far out do you feel (for yourself) that you must make every putt?
Another way of saying it, Do you have a distance that you feel that you must be 100% accurate?

Climo has said that he feels he needs to be 100% from 25' and everything outside that is a gift.
What is your distance if you were to say the above sentence?

i honestly think i should make everything from 40ft and in, but i have an odd thing where i miss an easy 20-25 footer in rounds all the time.
in reality it should be anything inside of the circle should be 95% or more.

i make alot of 45-50 footers, for some reason that seems to be my wheelhouse distance whan i am putting well

How down to earth and nice is MJ? He's not afraid to go fishing for his disc or a partners disc during a round. He retrieved one of my favorite go to discs i had lost in a pond, called me and returned it to me in person in a timely manner. Thanks again, MJ! Would Hysell do that for me? :p

Oh yeah, this is a Q&A thread.

MJ, when do you think we can get together for a round at Bradford?

i will have to say that i was looking for one of my discs when i found yours :p

as to playing bradford sometime in january i will gladly play a round of golf out there with you

What is your least favorite 18 hole course in Charlotte? I know this is a tough question because you most likely love them all. What makes the course your least favorite?

Woah, nice banner! That's a relief, that you're DGCR verified. I'd be embarrassed to have been fawning all over some random dude named Mitchell Jefferson!

probably eastway. I dont quite know why, but it doesnt suite my eye and the flow just feels awkward to me

I'm an attention whore...

Look at this beauty! This is my favorite disc to rip and watch fly. Anyhoo, my question is how long did you play recreational DG before you entered your first tournament? I plan on playing in my first soon, and I've been playing for 2 years. Second question (I told you in my title, Attention Whore), I seem to lose a lot of snap when I throw my Comet, or at least it seems like it. I can regularly throw my other Mids up to 350 ft, but can only get my Comet out to 250. Is this due to the mold, plastic, form (Me being a little bitch)? Any help is much appreciated, Thanks!

i played recreationally and casually for 3 or 4 years before i played a pdga event! I played club singles and some local dubs stuff after about 2 years or more.

as to what your comet is doing, could you be more specific about what other mids you throw and how your comet flies generally. i.e do you turn into the ground, throw it low, grip and rip it hard. stuff like that and i can give you better feedback and something that will help you out, not just general rambling that might possibly help! :)

MJ, I asked Paul this and wanted to see what you would like. What is one company, disc golf or non-disc golf company that you would like to be sponsored by?

i dont really know, never thought about it much. I'm not one who really goes looking for sponsors much. I tend to deal with local companies. But i guess something like Sun Drop/Choice Cola they are local to my area and a beverage sponsor in the sport would be fun!!!!!!

Yeah, Comets have that nasty glide. They just keep penetrating forward all the way to the ground. Gotta be careful with tailwinds throwing Comets they can go a long ways if you're not paying attention.

that i know, from experience!!! I've had a few get away from me and just watched them go flying way past the basket! :)

That's my favorite shot in all of disc golf...throw a Comet and watch it go, start walking with a big grin on my face becasue I just threw the thing a mile and I'm not going to let it bother me that I just went 150' past the pin. Even in competition where it costs me strokes, it's fun to watch something go that much farther than you thought it was going to. Of course if I was playing for money maybe it wouldn't be so much fun...
