The 2014 Memorial Championship

I see a lot of players are travelling halfway across the country to play this tournament on the am side. Are the am payouts comparable value wise to the pro in these big national tour events. If so, what do you do with a thousand dollars of scrip? If not , what's the big draw for am players at these NT events?

Payout??? Who cares about the payout?? I go for the experience.

Don't get me wrong... I love getting my voucher on the local tour here (10 straight cashes by the way in Disc Golf Monkey tour events), but when I travel to GBO, US Masters, or The Memorial, I really just go to have a good time and generally have no shot at making the money. The atmosphere is electric and watching some top shelf golf first hand is always good too. The Memorial was by far my favorite event last year and I see no reason I won't continue to play in it as long as I can.

This last Memorial saw a nice break from the wind, and players were having their way with the courses. I think the winds will be back this time, keeping everyone honest.

I hope so. As bad as it may seem, I like to see the pros struggle a little bit, if nothing else, because it makes the victory that much sweeter for those who do win.

What's the word on camping in the area?

Hit up Mashnut. He was just out here a couple months ago and found a good place to camp somewhere nearby. I've lived here for most my life, but never looked into camping locally, so I can't be much help.

I camped out at Lost Dutchman State Park, but that's not all that convenient for getting to and from Fountain Hills (it's a 40 minute or so drive). It was a really beautiful spot though.

If anyone wants to share a room at 3 Palms(the hotel ON the course, across from Dukes) send me a PM. I have a room booked already and could use a roomate. room is 2 queen beds. Would also be open to sharing it with 2-3 people and some could sleep on the floor and pay less. PM me if interested

For cheaper lodging google the Phoenix Yellow Pages and look for the non-chain cheap sounding hotels. You can find some for a weekly rate of about $170 with kitchenettes, most are in Tempe just a few miles south of Vista right off the 101 and 60. I stayed with a friend last year (I lived there for 2-3 years and moved here in 09) but I looked into it for some others who were traveling to the tourney. Wishin I was going this year!

Any word on course changes for this year?

Thanks for the tip, will look into it.

I'm not aware of any. However, Fountain Hills lost a few trees last year. Most notable of those were the trees just in front and right of the tee boxes on 8 and 9.

No live broadcast

Looks like the Memorial turned down free live broadcasting. Too bad. Terry Miller had sponsors and everything lined up but the event sponsor pulled the plug. It could be they were unsure of how well Terry could pull it off, or maybe they didn't like the fact that Legacy was a big sponsor. It isn't known for sure.

Either way, I think it is short sided. They are missing out on free advertising and denying the average person the ability to see live disc golf. :wall:

It's a real shame as the Memorial was a wonderful "welcome back" to the game last year. I have no idea/don't care why the plug was pulled (I do find it pretty funny that the plug was pulled over something that wasn't costing anyone but the production crew/sponsors a dime), but I am sad that I won't get to enjoy all those hyzers.

mcflysohigh will be there popping out vids the day after in much better quality.... and people were complaining about him making the trip.

Live memorial

Yes Mcflysohigh will be there, and I think that is great. But it isn't quite the same as watching it live... For free. We had all the equipment and bandwidth costs covered and we covered our own travel and lodging expenses. We had some sponsors for prizes and commercials.

We just wanted the chance to prove that we could provide some good coverage of an event, and I think we could have.

That's great news. I thought he said he was denied access to film the Memorial.
