American Disc Golf Tour

I'll also say that if one random internet thread is what brings down your "huge, game-changing event" that is probably wasn"t a very good event ro begin with.

Well I dont know where the basket will sit but that looks like a fun hole

It is, by all accounts, an excellent piece of property for such a venture.

Kudos for their securing it for the event, if nothing else.

Good post. I don't really agree, though. I think for the most part this thread is far more represenative of players with an axe to grind against Salient. Perhaps for very good reason, and I would agree that it should be heeded. I would suggest that most tournament players have no feelings toward Salient, one way or the other. Others have no real motive to do much posting here. I also don't really believe this tournament was built for success. It is well documented here, mistakes have been made and compounded. But, I think comparison to well established tournament with years of history could be unfair. I think considerations such as cost, time of the year, location, format, course....all have to be taken into consideration. Again, I don't want to leave the impression that Salient's actions have not been a major impediment to their own success. Though, despite the fun had here at sherking any responsibility, I think we bear some. The full negative press by a handful here have certainly done damage.....some even might be proud.
I am not a vindictive sort, nor one to ever root against anyone. Even my passionate rooting for my favorite sports teams is always kept to pulling for my team....never rooting against the opponent.

"Mistakes have been made" involves screwing people over and threatening lawsuits for bad reviews. Why would you not root against them?

And yes, I would be proud of all of us negative posters here if reading this thread prevents someone from playing in this tournament and potentially getting screwed over. The same way I would be proud to warn someone not to pet a dog that had been known to bite people in the past.

Why is this thread so popular? I know it was been BORING around here lately. Someone needs to start a thread of Epic-ness about now!

All this posting in here seems like some peoples thread counts are needing a boost... (just made it to 1,330 ;))

More than likely this is going to be a crap fest, cluster F when it goes down but, there could be an off chance that Chris can pull some shizzz out of his a$$ and it works. You guys would choke on all that crow :p.

For the sake of DG ( or the sake of Joe Random viewer that happens to see this on ESPN 8 the Ocho! ), we should be hoping/praying that it comes out positive. That statement comes from a guy who cant stand the whole "grow the sport" mess and has been referred to as an a$$ hole at times :D.

I really don't under the whole stupid-ness of making or TRYING to make new rules when established ones exist? Seems like they are going out of the way and WASTING all their "effort" for not . I guess that's why they are referred to as Falient around here.

Where does all their anti PDGA stance come from anyway?

I don't know, but part of the life of this thread is how much material they've given us to discuss. The anti-PDGA and the rules and the disc standards and the disappearing website and the $375 entry (with membership) and the......

I know, I know, very valid points. There is so much fuel for the fire they just might smother it .

For myself, I haven't been hoping they fail. I've been hoping they wise up, and address the flaws so they have a better chance of succeeding. I salute their effort. But I'm not placing any bets that they will.

I'm just mostly bored at work - never bought a thing from Salient so I have no experience good or bad.
I do however think it's important to discuss and have sharp criticism when something seems blatantly in need of it. There are almost endless points here.
Really I understand most of what they are going for I think - a new beginning...brave new world...leave the old behind...disc golf 2.0...ESPN is what we need to grow... I think

I think what might really end most of this for me is just an honest and heartfelt note from the Dr. about the reason for the PDGA split.

A couple of things. First, as stated, I don't know Salient. What I know is what has happened in terms of this event. It isn't impressive, you may not like that, but it is true. Poor communication, poor planning, and a desire to bite off more than you can chew, "hey look ma, we have our own rules, please ignore the fact that they are based on PDGA rules, and fairly incomplete," isn't impressive. This could possibly be the reason no one is signing on, like it or not.

Second, story time. I'm a disc golfer in Hobbiton in the Shire. I want to play in a big tournament. How do go about that? It turns out there is a mega tournament in Mordor, but I don't play in Mordor, so I can't see the posters they've put out. I don't have an all seeing evil eye, nor do I have a palantiri, they've been lost or are hidden in Isengard and the Dark Tower, the Gandalf messaging service is notably slow. Where do I go? I go to the internet.

Tournament players, and even more so, traveling tournament players go the internet to get information. When I want tournament info, I don't even go local, I go to PDGA.com. Whoops strike one, they taint there. When that fails I go to source number two, hey look, it's the DGCR site, the go to site for tournament events and commentary. So, this is a community, it's the one that matters, and you may be right, it is eating this even'ts backside out. Some of that is because of Salient, but honestly, they don't need that reputation. This event in and of itself is holding the smoking gun, and the hole goes in one butt cheek, and out the other. Bets on when the hole appears a little higher?

I live in Houston. One of the longer running events, which is now a statewide event, is Texas States. Last year the rotation was back in Houston. The city made it tough to get ready and get the facility set. As a consequence, despite heroic efforts on the part of the club, the facility was less than the Pros expected. The event got plenty of hash because of that. Welcome to the real world, if you can't line up your ducks, you get your knocks. This event has earned every knock it's gotten, and frankly more.

I agree with this statement...unless the Denver Broncos are playing.:D

I think the ADGT could have a successful event and attract many of the top players if they could guarantee a large cash payout. To verify the payout, the money could be deposited into an escrow account to be overseen and paid out by an independent fiduciary.

It is easier for players to overlook flaws with an event when money blocks the view.

Another good post, Lyle...entertaining to boot. Honestly, as an occasional tournament player, I rarely come here for information on a tournament. In my area DGS is the predominant source on information. If I am looking for jaded, slanted or opinionated discussion surrounding those events, I come here. (Please do not take that to mean it is not always useful, accurate or enjoyable....because it can be all three)
I want to reemphasize, I get the scuttlebutt. The tour is reaping what it has sowed. I was just railing against the several here, inundating this thread with hidden (mostly not hidden) personal agendas.

Try for a moment to set aside the personal agendas of those who post here. As you've pointed out, I'm judging the event based on what has happened. And it isn't great.

Now, lets put on our marketing hat. Salient was a marketing disaster. You can put out a pretty lousy product, and still succeed. Many companies do this, and they succeed because they manage their image. It is my feeling that the guys setting this up took the approach, OMG, look at this venue, it speaks for itself. That isn't good enough in a situation where you can't control your image. Controlling your image takes money and time and they have neither. That means they have to eat what they've earned. The agenda's of those here who are taking a "slice" out of Salient because of past misdeeds is appropriate. You might think it petty, but it is what it is. If more companies on a large scale reaped what they sowed, the world would be a better place. It is sad that the public can only deliver to small "companies" that can't buy an image, but you can't argue that it isn't fair.

Note, I'm pretty unforgiving of say, BP, who killed a number of people, and polluted the Gulf. The fact that they are now advertising to try and get people to think they care means nothing to me. The fact that they weren't held accountable does.

Last, the comments from the Salient bashers have actually been more than fair in my opinion. Most of them start out with a disclaimer, we have doubts given Salients' past actions and inability to deliver. I admit that those posters have reveled in each misstep by this tour, but you can't argue it isn't merited.

I think they should stop yapping about how awesome it is and just put together a good tourney. If 13 people show up so what, make it a good experience to all involved and you'll get more people next year..and so on and so on. To expect to reinvent the wheel so quickly is just unrealistic.

This.

How many years of experience and building a reputation does it take to put on an NT or Major caliber event and have it well received?
