I'm a big podcast listener. I listen during my work and disc golf commutes. My DG podcast list has expanded and includes most of the popular ones: Smashboxx, Disc Golf Answer Man / Inside the Circle, and Final Round Radio. They each have their pro's and con's, but I enjoy all of them. The one thing I dislike about ALL of them is the amount of mindless banter and small talk that drags out the podcast length past 1, 2, even 3 hours sometimes. Well, there's a new one -- the Upshot by Ultiworld Disc Golf -- that has all of the things I like about the 3 podcasts I currently listen to -- DG info, news, analysis, interviews -- but it's also professionally produced *and* (gasp) fast-paced. The length is still about an hour (and I'd still love to have more frequent episodes at a shorter length), but it's on-topic way more than the others and you don't find yourself yelling Get on with it! at the hosts. It seems to be coming out once a month (vs weekly plus special episodes and "aftershows" for Smashboxx, twice a week for DGAM/ITC, and biweekly for FRR). I'll still listen to my other 3, but the Upshot moves to the top of the playlist and doesn't get fast-forwarded like the others sometimes do. I recommend.

Another observation: the established DG podcasts are all hosted by fanboys and actual players. Their knowledge and passion for the sport is obvious. However, sometimes the shows either A) lack professionalism or B) are inside
baseball and fly over my head (as a weekend duffer, occasional tournament player, and all-around amateur). The Upshot is more like actual journalism. The hosts are candid and they report on what's going on the sport. I learned more about this weekend's DG Pro Tour event from these "outsiders" I a one-hour episode than I did in the much longer Smashboxx and DGAM podcasts.

I'm excited about the approach...and the new competition. Hopefully, all of the disc golf podcasts will up their games.

Thanks, Kenan. Your check is in the mail. ;)

In all seriousness, though, thank you very much for the kind words, and for checking out the podcast. You have gotten exactly what we were aiming for: topical, and to the point. Both myself and Charlie, the publisher/host of the pod, knew from the jump that we did not want to put out a long podcast, mostly because we don't want to listen to something that long ourselves. We also have the advantage of being an independent journalistic outpost, so I am glad that is coming across in our discussions. It's something we both feel is important to bring to the sport.

We'll try to bring the frequency up a bit, especially as we head toward Worlds (we're also planning on doing a couple live pods from Worlds, which may go a bit longer if we bring on some players for interviews). But again, thank you for the kind words. I'm glad you're enjoying listening to it as much as we enjoy recording it. :D

My pleasure! After listening to a couple of pods now, and checking out the new "Off the Fairway" podcast, I must say, I think I found my two new favorites. I've already gone through Ultiworld's (and I'm excited to hear that episodes may drop more frequently this summer!).

Off the Fairway is also very fast-paced and entertaining. If Ultiworld has a sports magazine type of feel to it, in terms of journalists really diving into the coverage, Off the Fairway reminded me of sports talk radio (and in a good way). The hosts were very funny. They drift off-topic some, but on rabbit trails that are actually funny and entertaining.

I listened through the Spund Cloud website. Hopefully they'll put out an RSS feed that can be picked pu by the pod catchers. I also hope they up their episode frequency.

Great new shows and kudos to all of the creators! Thank you!

The Upshot is great. Finally got around to listening. Good on-topic conversation that does not drag on and on for 3 hours. I like how Upshot speaks unbiased and has an organized and well thought out show.

Even though I do like DG answerman, sometimes the show comes off like a big trilogy commercial. But I do like Bobby and Eric and the crew's commentary about timely topics not necessarily disc reviews or what should I throw.

That's why I like Upshot they speak about timely DG issues, tournament analysis and other things going on in the sport aside from reviews, new discs, bags, and merchandise.

1) The Upshot
2) DG answerman
3) Zen disc Golf

I use the Android app Player FM for all my podcasts and for some reason the Upshot podcast is not visible there. I did find of the older podcasts, but it said that the channel has been replaced by the Ultiworld podcast. When I go there, there's only Ultimate stuff.

So is this user or app related issue or is there something Ultiworld could do to improve the availability on Player FM?

We recently switched our pod host to Spreaker, so that may have something to do with it. We've let our IT guy know so he can look into it. I'll keep you posted. :D

Very impressed with this podcast. Great content, concise, flows well from one topic to another.

And that was fast. Should be up on Player FM now. Please let me know if it isn't.

Thank you! Very pleased with the response so far. I know we're the new kids on the block, so to speak, but hopefully we're bringing something fresh to the field.

It's the most listenable one to me. I listen to a lot of podcasts, and the DG offerings have all suffered from being too long, poor audio quality, way too many voices, and lack of production standards. You guys are off to a great start. Mix in some quality guests more often, but jeep doing what you're doing.

Thanks! Guests are on the horizon, most definitely. Anyone in particular you'd like us to try to have on? Just players, or others in the industry?

Just doing a quick read through on this thread. Thanks for the shoutouts on Disc Golf Answer Man and Inside the Circle.

If I may add a shameless plug. We are looking to adjust DGAM just a bit. Sure, it feels like a big commercial sometimes but, that is because we are most knowledgeable about the brands we throw (and those brands pay our bills). We still try to add info that benefits everyone.

Another plug is that the Inside the Circle segments have been popular which means we are going to put more into it. We are working on a new site, it will have its own feed, and we are looking to dig more into disc golf tournaments and topics so stay tuned. ITCDiscGolf.com

I was too anxious to wait for it so I listened through all of the episodes on the browser. :D
But yeah, the show is now up on the Player FM and naturally subscribed.

What comes to the show, I can fully agree with all positive reviews from the other posters. It is very professional sounding and still very entertaining. I don't want to have a news feed that is reading stuff on a monotonic voice so I feel like you've hit the sweet spot here.

What comes to the future guests, I would like to hear from the top guys that are not on every lead card, like Barsby, Gibson, Johansen, Williams, Gurthie, Wiggins, Nikko. It's rather easy to follow guys like Eagle, Simon and McBeth, but there are a lot of guys who seem to be missing some tourneys, are on a rollercoaster ride or changing sponsors and it would be nice to hear the story behind it.

I do have to say, that I also love the DGAM and Final Round Radio with all their banter and inside info. Tbh, from DGAM I'm actually most excited to hear stuff about their products as they are the ones who know them the best. How are discs molding up, what products are coming up, which molds are popular among their pros, etc. I don't see it as a bad thing at all.
