[Recommend] Best disc for Top of the World shot?

I will be playing Solitude Mountain Resort in September and after watching some video on hole 18, I started wondering what is the best strategy for reaching the bottom and what disc is going to give me the best chance at getting there. That hole is approx 1,200' long and goes down 400' over the length of the hole.

I can't tell what is being thrown during the last part of this video and I probably don't have that kind of distance anyway (my longest throws over level ground are usually between 390-410 or so). So go with a distance driver or fairway driver? Stable, understable, very understable?

Doof, I played Solitude for my first and only time three weeks ago. I opted for a Discraft Impact fairway driver because it flies dead straight for me for such a long time, I ended up about 300 feet short of the hole, but I easily out-drove everyone else on the tee pad, as they all threw distance drivers which broke off on a hyzer line halfway down the hill.

I made sure to throw down the hill, not straight out or up at all.

Just missed a TWO on the hole. Okay, I missed by 60 feet to the side, but the distance was exactly right on my second shot. Missed the putt, settled for a drop-in four.

Given another chance, I'd do exactly the same thing again, except I'd nail the second shot and become an instant legend: The Old Guy From Michigan Who Canned The Deuce With His Impact.

Good Luck! (Your mileage may vary.)

I've never thrown on a hole that insanely downhill but I would throw something stable to understable. Anything overstable would fade out too fast. Something with a lot of glide, low speed. Maybe even launching a midrange disc would be a good choice. I'd love to see how far a mako3 would go. A low speed, high glide, understable midrange or fairway driver.

I usually throw an overhand shot for these holes, it takes away a lot of the horizontal movement and allows you for hit a smaller target.

On shorter ones a stable mid or putter can be very good just to float down straightish.

I am not familiar with this specific hole, but in General you want to throw something slightly overstable on long downhills. The worst thing that can happen is if you throw something flippy and it gets on a bad line. Those will tend to go hundreds and hundreds of feet in the wrong direction while something a little more overstable will have a worst case of fading out to early and hitting the ground super short. It can be tempting to throw something understable and have it glide because you don't think you can throw it far enough, but my normal line is a Rival or PD in a slight hyzer and just have it fly straight for as long as it can.

I threw my River off a mountain. It worked out well. I would go with something similar if in the same situation. Maybe a Tursas even. Those things have killer glide.

(This is based off of 18 blue at Diamond X, which is ~700' long and ~170' downhill. I threw past it 6 days ago.)

Any stable/neutral disc can get there. I'd recommend a faster disc as long as you can get it to fly straight. However it is possible with a mid or even a putter...it just takes longer to get there. Those slower floaty shots are super fun, but more time in the air means more time for a shift in the wind to mess it up.

Aard's comment above about throwing down the hill is exactly correct. The key is to find the sweet spot where your disc isn't gaining speed from flying downwards and not losing speed due to drag. At the equilibrium point between those two factors, the disc speed is constant. Any disc that flies stable (straight) at that equilibrium speed can keep going as long as nothing blocks the path of that downhill trajectory.

My recommendation is something slightly stable in a fairway or mid. I would probably use a seasoned TeeBird for the shot you described

Something understable. Don't forget the elevation too. Your discs are going to act more overstable. I would probably go Hatchet.

Comet or beat Gazelle/ freshish leopard. Although my gopher-it always gets the best of me and I throw something bigger

I personally prefer a Roc3 or slightly beat Thunderbird. Anything too understable can flip out of control and too overstable dies out. If you throw low and hard or a high hyzer something overstable can be predictable though. I really like a Roc3. The nice slow glide kicks in and they cruise straight forever. Make sure you get some practice in. Mountain courses are completely different and take some getting used to. First time I played one it took about a full round before feeling comfortable with what to throw.

Anything with a neutral flight should work. Impact mentioned earlier was a great choice.

Never played such a downhill hole as that, but I think I saw it on a video from a tournament last year.

When I read the OP's post, the words "Gold Line Saint" came to my mind, FWIW.

Agree 100%. You're going to be at nearly 10,000'. The altitude is a significant factor.

My answer is a Discraft Glide. It's my go to altitude disc.

If not windy my best downhill Throws are with stable putters or mids. Ive thrown molds like ion or fuse 700' downhill. Faster drivers tend to fade out early specially when OS and US high speeders can flip early and get wayyyyy off the line.

Threw my proxy a ton at the last ski course i played on. So fun to watch float down!
