Amateur Tournament Series

I get the regional part. My son is 9 and he has participated in swimming and climbing over the past few years. We've driven all over North Texas for ribbons. Don't remember the entry fees, but if you add in the monthly club membership $100 + travel wouldn't break the bank.

I've promoted Baseball, Golf and Poker Tournaments. If we build it and make it exciting AND do as we say we are going to do - it should work. My kids all played Travel Ball - spent way more than $100 + Gas on a Saturday for sure . . .

I can say for sure that there will be some folks with "home course" advantage that will probably walk away with the prize. Unlike stick and ball sports, being familiar with a course is a significant advantage.

True. On the Championship part - those that Qualify, can come play a practice round the weekend before if they wish . . .

On the marketing end...you need to figure out how you plan to get word out. If you don't market/advertise, why would someone sponsor your event? Isn't the the purpose of sponsoring an event? It's a marketing expense and you are offering no marketing other than to those that choose to show up if anyone finds out about the event.

This is my specialty. In addition - if we do get Sanctioned by the PDGA - then www.discgolfscene.com will be one way to market, in addition to all the other Disc Golf Forums, Social Media pages, etc that I'm finding . . .

We'll make the events a really big deal onsite. Vendors, Games, Music, Contests, Prizes, etc.

Sponsorships, Games, Contests, Concessions, etc is where I will make my money.

#BuildItTheyWillCome

#MakeItGreatTheyWillComeBack

Thanks for the input . . .

I have been in contact with the PDGA about this concept, the prizes, etc.

We just have to get on a few calls and see if it can be done as a sanctioned event or not. I'll be in touch with them Monday after the holidays.

What is your disc golf experience? Player and/or TD.

Covered previously.

"Nope. Got the idea after talking with friends that play. I went and threw some discs and I completely sucked at it. But - my skills are directing events - Baseball Tournaments, Golf Tournaments, Poker Tournaments, etc.

Did my research over the weekend and saw the potential of the sport. "

I'm not too familiar with the PDGA. I'll know more after speaking with them.

Being sanctioned would be better. That way the Players efforts in our Series can benefit their ratings, rankings, etc maybe?

Except for the fact that X tiers aren't rated. Another very basic thing you're not understanding.

This is what grow the sport attracts. Every tom, dick and harry thinking they are the one to come in with a new idea and change the landscape. Ooh another unique shirt and mini, no thanks. This wreaks of a money grab.

you haven't played an event or td'd one and now your are putting a series together, hard pass.

Even worse. OP said they only played one time and decided they aren't going to play again, but instead will run tournaments. And will "be the go to tournament by the 2nd or 3rd one".

$100 + $50 in gas if they qualified for the 'Ship? If an Amateur that loves the game can't afford that - then, I don't know what to say.

I imagine most players drink that at a bar on the weekend.

i think you would have better success if you just held a raffle for that big prize.

I believe they are, if normal playing rules and format are used.

There used to be team play events at the IDGC, with 1 singles round (rated), plus doubles & match play rounds (not rated).

Seems like the OP assumes there has never been anyone involved with disc golf that had experience running events.

I predict if anything happens it would be a one off. If you don't know disc golfers there is no way you can know their expectations at tournaments.

Good luck but it'll be a waste of your time and money, imo.

Opportunity to put on a sanctioned event is pretty much over, at least in my area. The local tournament schedule has been set and approved by the PDGA State Coordinator. The deadlines to submit have passed and all the radius restrictions, for the various tiers have been calculated. I don't believe there are many, if any, weekends without a local sanctioned event. Then most holes, on a more regional scale, have been filled with non sanctioned events. Perhaps the Carolina's and Georgia do not have this kind of filled calendar.

5 minutes as a Player. Bad back and Rotator Cuff - playing won't work for me . . .

Just starting as a TD. Will work closely with other TD's to get a crash course on disc golf.

Well, my name is Tom ;)

Nope. We will pay out 90%+ of all player entry fees after transaction fees, etc.

No offense, but directing a tournament of any type isn't rocket science. Just takes hard work, time management, communication and marketing . . . I can do all four.

We're doubling and tripling up on weekends, and still filling. There are no radius restrictions between C-tiers, and only 40 miles between B- and C-. Our state coordinator is doing a great job of juggling and negotiating, and I'm sure there is still room later in the year.

There's a lot of excess demand.

Sidebar: Our tournament at Stoney Hill has become so fast-filling it's a nuisance. So this year we requested to be scheduled the same weekend as an A-tier, to tamp down demand; they drew 213, and we still filled in 3 minutes. So we scheduled a 2nd weekend for the overflow, against an already-filled C-tier with a 20-year history, and that TD's blessing and radius waiver, and nearly filled again.

The barrier to entry in the Disc golf scene is very low.

I've watched over 20 hours of video of some past events.

I will also be volunteering my time at several local Tournaments over the next few months to learn more about the sport AND the behind the scene activities of the TD.

I never assumed as such . . .

I believe you assume that someone that has experience directing Tournaments that weren't Disc Golf, would fail at directing a Disc Golf Tournament.

I have plenty of time and won't be spending a penny of my own money.

I'm not trying to get rich with this concept. I love running Tournaments and believe with the popularity of the sport [ which I didn't even know existed a month ago ] - a tournament format like we are going to run will be well receipted by the local Amateur players. That is our goal anyway . . .

Not sure. I've looked at some calendars and we can make it happen in our Qualifier cities.
